No. 1 Providence (3-0) cruised past No. 34 Lemont 6-1 behind University of Notre Dame-bound Zak Kutsulis. The future Fighting Irish OF/LHP singled and doubled and drove home four Celtic runs. Celtic junior RHP Yianni Pavlopoulos (1-0) fired four scoreless innings to pick up the win on the mound for the top-ranked team in Illinois.

No. 3 Normal West (3-0) slipped past Rock Island 3-2 as NIU-bound Wes Sery improved to 2-0 with 1 2/3 of scoreless relief of Wildcat junior Nick Hieb. Hieb fired 5 1/3 innings of two-hit baseball. The run allowed by Hieb was unearned. 6-foot-3, 225 pound sophomore Reed Rogers had a single and a double to lead the Wildcat attack on Wednesday. 

No.7 Simeon (5-0) allowed its first two runs of the season to Shepard (1-2) but the Wolverines scored an even dozen and routed the Astros 12-2 in six innings. Freshman LHP Terrance Robertson became the first Wolverine pitcher this season to be scored upon, allowing two earned runs. Robertson fired a six-hitter at the Astros, striking out three to improve to 2-0 on the season. Robertson’s ERA still stands at 1.27. He also helped himself at the plate with a single and a triple and plated two Wolverine runs.

Louisville-recruit Corey Ray had a perfect 3-for-3 day, with a triple and a two-run moon-shot over the left-centerfield fence. Junior Marshawn Taylor had three hits, including a triple and drove in two runs and junior Robert Fletcher chipped in with a pair of hits as the Wolverines have now outscored the opposition 57-2.

No. 8 Marian Catholic (2-0) blanked Joliet Central 11-0 in five innings.Spartan sophomore 1B Pat Schmidt had a perfect 2-for-2 day with a double and an RBI. Spartan junior C Brent Feldner drove home a pair for MC. Western Illinois-bound RHP Robbie Nunn (1-0) picked up the win for the Spartans.

No. 9 St. Rita (1-2) flattened Brooks 10-0 in five innings. Mustang Peter Cozzi led St. Rita with three doubles and he drove home four Mustang runs.

Nazareth Academy (4-0) graduated a ton of talent from the Roadrunners Class 3A fourth-place finishers in 2011. We at the PBR didn’t think the Roadrunners could overcome such huge losses. Well, think again. Head Coach Lee Milano’s Roadrunners are back as they showed Wednesday, as they stunned No. 16 Glenbrook North 8-5. 

Trailing 4-1 in the third, the Roadrunners exploded for six runs, highlighted by junior Jake Piotrowski’s clutch two-run single. Sophomore Tim DalPorto blasted a solo shot and sophomore Jake Bartels fired four innings of one-run relief to pick up the win on the mound for the resurgent ‘Runners. Beep! Beep!

No. 17 Herscher (1-2) fell again, this time to Morris 10-3.

No. 20 Chatham Glenwood (2-0; 2-0) routed Springfield 10-1 in Central State 8 play on Wednesday.

No.26 Mundelein (5-0) blanked Wauconda 5-0 in a North Suburban Conference crossover on Wednesday. Senior LHP Jared Mandel (2-0) fired five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.

No. 29 Plainfield North (2-0) defeated the defending Class 3A champs from Kaneland 3-1, behind Tiger sophomore Colton Smith. Smith doubled home the eventual game-winner for the Tigers.

No. 30 Maine South (3-0) blasted Lake View 11-1 in five innings. Hawk senior RHP Pat Aloisio fired a three-hitter with six punch-outs’s to pick up his first win of the 2012 campaign. Hawks senior 2B Jesus Saveedra led the Hawks with a pair of hits and three RBI.

No. 31 Stevenson (1-0) bombed Crystal Lake Central 11-1 in the Patriots’ season-opener on Wednesday. Jon Savarise led the Patriot attack with two hits, including a double and drove in six runs.

No. 36 Libertyville (2-1) smashed Carmel 7-2 behind Wildcat senior RHP Dar Townsend (1-0), who fired five scoreless, allowing three hits with six strikeouts. Townsend also drove home a pair of Wildcat runs with his bat.

No. 48 De La Salle (2-1) got stung by undefeated Marist (3-0) in Mt. Greenwood on Wednesday. Notre Dame-bound LHP Mike Hearne (2-0) fired a four-hitter at the Meteors with 10 strikeouts. Redhawk junior Ryan Polak singled, doubled and plated a run for the ‘Hawks.

Mount Vernon (5-0) took care of Waterloo on Wednesday as the Rams rolled to a 7-1 victory, at Waterloo. Rams’ 6-foot-4 sophomore Brock Fulkerson (2-0) fired a six-hitter at the Bulldogs. Fulkerson struck out six. Senior Zack Jones doubled, tripled and drove home a run. Junior Matthew Williams had a pair of hits, including a double and plated a Ram run.

Elk Grove (2-0) rallied past Jacobs 3-2 in eight innings, as Grenadier senior Cody Gustafson singled home the game-winner and sent the gathering along Salt Creek home happy.Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Grenadier sophomore SS Adam O’Malley, thrilled the Elk Grove contingent with his clutch two-out, two run single that sent the contest into extra innings.

Defending Chicago Catholic League White Division champs Fenwick improved to 3-0 with a 13-3 five-inning victory over Jones Prep. Creighton-bound Ryan Fitzgerald was a long-one shy of hitting for the cycle. Fitzgerald had a 4-for-5 day with an RBI. Friar Drew Schroeder added a bomb with the sacks full to complete Wednesday’s Friar onslaught.

Surprising Gordon Tech (5-0) walloped Niles North 14-3 in five innings. Ram senior RHP Dakota Pisarek fired a complete-game at the Vikings to improve to 2-0. Ram senior captain Jack Garvey had two doubles and a three-run bomb to lead the Ram attack.

Streamwood (3-1) blasted Wheeling 9-0 behind a three-hitter from Sabre junior Mark Harding (1-0). University of Illinois-bound Richie Gorski led the Sabres attack with three hits.  

Manteno (5-0) defeated Immaculate Conception 4-3 on Wednesday. Red-hot junior catcher Ryan Sample had a perfect 2-for-2 day, including an RBI double. Panther sophomore Adam Schaeffer matched his junior teammate, with a perfect 2-for-2 day and drove home a Panther run. Senior Joey Di Leo tripled home a Panther run. Senior Panther ace, Mark Reardanz (2-0), fired 2 2/3 innings of one-run relief to pick up the win on the mound. 

Pekin and Normal Community were knotted at 4-4 as the game moved to the top of the seventh, in the season-opener for both clubs. Normal senior Josh Raycroft launched a two-run bomb, to highlight a five-run Ironman uprising, as Normal defeated Pekin 9-4 in Pekin Wednesday. Heartland Community College-bound Eric Fight also went deep for Normal Community.

Palatine (2-2) slipped past Cary-Grove 2-1 behind a two-run bomb from Pirate 2B Scott Schnebergers and a three-hitter from Bradley-University-bound Eric Scheuermann (2-0).

Morton (IL) (1-0) defeated Bloomington 5-1 behind Illinois State-bound LHP Will Headean (1-0). Headean pitched three spotless innings of relief for the Potters. Every out Headean recorded was a strikeout - 9 Ks in three innings.

Barrington (2-1) won a slugfest with Grant 17-11, on Wednesday. Bronco senior Aaron Foley tripled, homered and drove in five Bronco runs. Senior Justin Gitelis also plated five Bronco runs.

Glenbard South (4-0) nipped Willowbrook 4-3, as EIU-bound RHP Mitch Gasbarro improved to 2-0 on the mound for the Metro Suburban Conference favorites.

Warren (1-1) defeated Waukegan 7-5, behind future Purdue Boilermaker Patrick Kenny, who fell a home run shy of hitting for the cycle for the Blue Devils. Junior RHP Adam Reuss (1-0) allowed one run in four quality innings in relief of Kenny to pick up the win on the mound for the Blue Devils.
