New England Snapshot -

2018 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft

In this year’s Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft some Connecticut high schoolers got the call. These men will now have to choose whether to sign with the respective organizations or carry out their commitments to their respective schools this fall.

At the top of the list was Waterford’s Michael Burrows, who was selected in the 11th round by the Pirates, who also snagged UConn catcher Zac Susi. He’s a UConn commit and based on where he was selected it’s fair to say that he may entertain his options.

Pat Winkel, who has been Amity coach Sal Coppola’s crown jewel, was taken in the 31st round by the Yankees. Like Burrows, he also has a commitment to Storrs, where he’d be able to join his brother, Huskies’ first baseman Chris Winkel. And depending on what Susi does, catcher may be open for him as he steps on campus this fall.

Simsbury’s Brandon White, who is committed to Southern Connecticut State and longtime Owls coach Tim Shea, was taken by Oakland in the 35th round. His teammate, Jack Montgomery, a second baseman, was taken by Seattle three rounds later.

And Avon Old Farms products Hudson Haskin and Ryan Cusick went in rounds 39 and 40, respectively, to the Athletics and Cincinnati Reds.
