Newman Ready To Make An Impact At Bowling Green
ARCHBOLD - The resume for DJ Newman is an impressive one.
There is now a new challenge awaiting the 13th-ranked 2022 shortstop in Ohio once the Archbold High School standout graduates. The Bowling Green commit will still have an opportunity to pitch, but the position for the BGSU two-way prospect will be as an outfielder.
“The schools that I had been in contact with, that's what they all said and I’m fine with that,” related Newman about moving to the outfield at the next level. “I’ve played it some in the summer.”
Doing two positions in college will, admittedly, be demanding.
“You know it will be a challenge, not many do it,” Newman said. “If it was easy more people would do it. But I love the idea and want to do it as long as I can.”
Although the end of the recruiting process came in November for the top-rated uncommitted senior in the state, initial interest from Bowling Green took place some time ago.
“Coach (Kyle) Hallock heard about me my freshman year and that turned his head with me starting with all those seniors,” reflected Newman, in reference to the BGSU head coach. “I played in the Future Games a couple years back (August of 2020) and right after that coach Hallock was in contact with me. After that we didn’t talk for awhile but then it picked back up during last season with Archbold and he made it to some Ohio Elite games in the summer.”
The 48th-ranked 2022 in Ohio made a good impression on Bowling Green.
“Schools always ask coaches if they recommend a player and after talking with my high school coaches he came away interested,” Newman explained. “On the field they like my speed and that I’m a guy that can throw hard.”
Oakland was the only other program to offer Newman, though a number of other Mid-American Conference schools had a lot of intrigue in the three-sport athlete.
“I like the program, the coaches and the location,” Newman said about Bowling Green. “It makes me feel like home when I’m there.”
The chance to play Division I baseball 50 minutes from home is a blessing.
“I have a feeling people from Archbold will make it to the games,” Newman noted. “I know my family will. Growing up in Archbold has been amazing and, while BG will be a new experience, I feel it will be pretty similar.”
What will be different is being a full-time baseball player instead of being on a schedule organized to get better at three sports like in high school.
“I’ve never had a chance to just focus on hitting and throwing hard,” Newman related. “You can only get so much stronger during a season and with no down time. Now I’ll be able to hit the weight room harder.”
Despite an impressive high school career, finding a college home was far from easy.
“It was pretty slow for me,” Newman said of his recruiting process. “I thought I’d get more looks but whether it was Covid or whatever, it didn’t happen. Spots filled up or you weren’t good enough. But I can’t wait to go to BG.”
A 3.3 student unsure of a college major, Newman anticipates a great time while being a significant contributor as part of the MAC program in Wood County.
“I know some of the guys going there but not too in depth, so I’m looking forward to meeting all the new guys,” explained Newman, who said he has always considered baseball his future sport with the “best chance to succeed” while growing up. “I’m also looking forward to working hard there and having winning seasons.”
That is something Newman has experienced throughout his high school days and hopes to bring to Bowling Green now that the difficult decision of making a college choice has been made.
“I have a big family that loves to support me and they’re excited I’m going to BG,” Newman said. “It’s a great school and they support my decision wholeheartedly.”
