No. 9 Sherwood and No. 13 Walt Whitman met Tuesday afternoon in an early season showdown between the two Montgomery County schools. The Vikings drew first blood when Tyler DeMartino (West Virginia) took one deep to right for an RBI double but the Warriors answered in the bottom half to tie the game at one a piece. Shortstop Luke Cheng (Illinois State) broke the tie in the bottom of the second with a 2-RBI double to left-center to give Sherwood a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Warriors offense was relentless all game, scoring in every inning and answering every Whitman attempt to chip away at the lead.

Warriors starting pitcher Ben Vok (Frostburg State) settled in after the first keeping the Vikings off the scoreboard again until the fourth inning. Vok earned the win on the mound going four innings, scattering three hits while striking out four. Michael Bouma (Maryland) and Cheng led the way offensively for Sherwood with three hits and two RBI's each and uncommitted 2021 Jake Becker finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Walt Whitman mustered a rally in the fifth inning highlighted by Justin Carboni's (UPENN) no-doubt blast over the left field fence to cut the lead to three runs at 7-4 but that's as close as they would come again falling to the Warriors by a final score of 9-5. DeMartino finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored and Carboni, Harry Caplan, and Jack Ryan (UMBC) each collected one hit on the afternoon.

What's Next: No. 9 Sherwood will travel to Blake on Thursday and Clarksburg on Saturday while No. 13 Walt Whitman hosts Poolesville on Thursday and pays a visit to Einstein on Saturday.
