BROWNSBURG — Top-ranked Fishers filled up the scoreboard Saturday, April 21.

It’s something the Tigers have been doing regularly during the first half of the 2018 high school baseball season.

Fishers (13-3, 8-1) racked up 18 hits — four of them doubles — in besting Hoosier Crossroads Conference opponent Brownsburg 19-6.

It was the seventh time in the last eight games and the ninth occasion this spring the Tigers scored at least 10 runs in a game.

“Our guys have been swinging it really well,” said Fishers coach Matt Cherry after his team swept the three-game HCC series with the Bulldogs (following a 12-2 win Thursday and 8-7 triumph in 10 innings riday) and extended their overall win streak to eight. “We have an awesome hitting coach (Brice Davis) that really gets after them. They’ve bought into an approach and what (pitches) they’re looking for and they’ve done damage.”

The Tigers sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the first inning Saturday and also plated three runs in the second, two in the third and three more in the seventh.

Senior Craig Yoho lashed four hits while junior J.J. Woolwine (two doubles) and sophomore Collin Shelton (one double) rapped three each and senior Jack Roudebush (one double) and junior Kiel Brenczewski two apiece for Fishers.

Seven different Tigers drove in a run, led by Yoho with four, senior Ben Burton with three and Woolwine, Brenczewski and Roudebush with two each.

Crossing the plate three times apiece were Woolwine, Burton, Roudebush, Shelton and junior Tristan Baker.

Fishers used four pitchers — junior right-hander A.J. Waltermann (1 2/3 innings, 4 runs, 2 hits, 6 walks, 1 strikeout), senior righty Griffin Rhoads (2 1/3 innings, 2 runs, 4 hits, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts),
sophomore left-hander Mason Thomas (1 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 strikeout) and lefty Baker (2 innings, 0 runs, 0 hits, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts). Rhoads got the victory.

Brownsburg (2-6, 1-5) refused to roll over after the early wide margin. The Bulldogs plated four runs in the second inning and two in the fourth.

“Thst’s what I preach to these guys,” said Brownsburg Dan Roman of a never-quit spirit. “In past years, they might have quit. I’m not saying they would have, but they might have. Not with this team. I’m not going let them.

“They know that. They know how I’m going to coach them. We’re going to play the game the right way for seven innings.”

Two hits each were collected by Luis Escalante and Peyton Jackson. Escalante and Travis Bevington both drilled doubles for Brownsburg.

“We attacked the ball a little bit,” said Roman. “We hit the ball sharp instead of settling for just making contact.

“That just takes confidence. We need more games against great teams like (Fishers) to insure some more confidence.”

Roman employed five pitchers — junior right-hander Chris Klayer (1 inning, 10 runs, 6 hits, 4 walks, 2 strikeouts), senior right-hander Javyen Randolph (1 inning, 3 runs, 4 hits, 0 walks, 1 strikeout),sophomore right-handers Bevington (1 1/3 innings, 2 runs, 1 hit, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts) and Kerrington Cross (1 2/3 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits, 0 walks, 1 strikeout) and senior righty Jordan Jones (2
innings, 3 runs, 4 hits, 4 walks, 1 strikeout). Klayer took the loss.

“You’ve got to throw three pitches for strikes against (Fishers),” said Roman. “If you don’t, you’re going to fall behind and you’re going to serve it up.”

Brownsburg visits Avon in the final of the Hendricks County Tournament Monday, April 23. Fishers visits Pendleton Heights for a non-conference game Tuesday, April 24.
