Northern Indiana Winter Preview: Infield Analysis

On Saturday, January 3rd, PBR Indiana hosted the Northern Indiana Winter Preview Showcase at Hobart High School  in Hobart, Indiana.  A total of 28 players participated in the event, with the majority coming from the northern part of the state.  Below we take a look at the infielders that participated in the event. 
 

Middle Infielders (Listed Alphabetically)

2016's

Evan Frank, 2B, Crown Point HS, 2016: 5-foot-8, 135 pound Junior possesses average hands in the field.  Lacks elite foot speed.  Ran a 7.88-60.  Fields it clean and plays through the ball well.  Makes the routine play.  Across the diamond was 69 mph.  At the plate hits from an athletic setup.  Smooth load with a short stride.  Tendency to dive towards the ball during the stride.  Up the middle approach with average bat speed.  Level path to the ball.  Ability to barrel up and drive it to the opposite field.  Contact type hitter.  Registered an exit velo of  70 mph.  

Will Gorsuch, SS, Bishop Dwenger HS, 2016: 6-foot-1, 175 pound Junior ran a 7.25-60 at the event.  Defensively has a tendency to play on his heels.  Flat feet.  Across the diamond showed an accurate arm at 78 mph.  At the plate starts in an athletic setup.  Toe slide for timing.  Long stride.  Average balance throughout.  Long, level path to the ball, pull-side hitter.  Above average bat speed.  Registered an exit velo of 86 mph.  

2017's

Daniel Calo, SS/2B, Portage HS, 2017: 6-foot, 160 pound sophomore possesses good hands defensively.  Showcased fluid feet and a clean exchange.  Showed the ability to play through the ball well with some athleticism.  Needs to improve his speed in order to stay up the middle, ran a 7.64-60.  At the plate hits from an athletic setup.  Smooth load with a short stride.  Average use of the lower half.  Shows a good approach for a 2017.  Long path to the ball producing line drives.  High contact hitter.  Will need to continue to add strength at the plate.  Registered an exit velo of 73 mph.  

Evan Kahre, SS, Evansville Central HS, 2017: 6-foot, 140 pound sophomore has a lanky, athletic frame.  Long arm action across the diamond at 76 mph.  Average feet and hands.   Moves well with a clean exchange.  Ran a 7.35-60.  Offensively, hits from an athletic setup.  Loads back and uses a short stride.  Average use of the lower half and has good balance.  Bat speed is average with a good approach.  Short, level path to the baseballs.  Barrels up a lot of balls.  Overall clean, simple swing.  Needs to continue to add strength.  Registered an exit velo of 74 mph.  

Michael Lakomek, 2B/MIF, Portage HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 125 pound middle infielder  ran a 7.13-60 at the event.  In the infield uses a long arm action across the diamond, 75 mph with accuracy.  Average glove with a clean exchange.  Moves well and plays through the baseball.   At the plate starts in a wide stance.  Arm bar during the load.  Short stride with average balance.  Bat speed is average with a long path to the baseball.  Opposite field/slap type hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 75 mph.   

Jarrett Lopez, 2B/MIF, Lake Central HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 14 pound sophomore possesses average hands in the field.  Fluid feet with a clean exchange.   Plays through the baseball well.  Accurate arm across the field at 71 mph.  Needs to continue to add strength.  Makes the routine play.  At the plate starts with a slightly open front foot.  Open to closed stride.  Long path to the ball with average bat speed.  Line drive hitter. 

Joey Martoccio, SS/2B, Griffith HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 165 pound sophomore shows clean actions defensively with good hands.  Fluid feet.  Clean exchange and plays through the ball well.  Needs to increase foot speed.   Ran a 7.50-60 at the event.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup.  Minimal load.  Short stride.  Tendency to close off the front side.  Level path to the ball.  Line drive type hitter with the ability to hit to all fields. 

Matt Olovich, SS, Guerin Catholic HS, 2017:  5-foot-9, 167 pound MIF  Ran a 7.36-60 at the event.  In the infield shows soft hands with a clean exchange.  Arm action is long and was 84 across the field with accuracy.  Solid defender, needs to improve foot speed.   Offensively, hits from an athletic setup.  Loads back.  Stride is short with good balance throughout.  Shows some bat speed with an uphill path to the baseball.  Showcased the ability to drive the baseball to the opposite field.  Overall fluid rhythm.  Registered an exit velo of 82 mph.   

2018's 

Conner Tomasic, SS, Lake Central HS, 2018: 6-foot, 157 pound freshman showcased above average hands with fluid feet in the field.  Plays through the baseball well with a clean exchange.  Smooth, easy actions for a 2018.  Across the diamond was 77 mph with accuracy.  Ran a 7.26-60.  Offensively, starts tall and open.  Leg kick.  Average bat speed with a good approach for a 2018.  Level path to the ball, line drive type hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 75 mph.  

Corner Infielders (Listed Alphabetically) 

2016's

Kody McGuire, 3B, Portage HS, 2016
: 6-foot, 196 pound Junior showcased above hands with a quick, clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball well.  Was 74 mph across the diamond.  Lacks elite foot speed.  Ran a 8.10-60 at the event.  Offensively, hits out of a slight crouch. Loads back, short stride.  Above average bat speed with an overall good approach.  Level path.  When getting to extension shows some pop to his pull-side.  Registered an exit velo of 80 mph.  

Nicholas Ricci, 1B, Crown Point HS, 2016: 6-foot-1, 205 pounder possesses a strong frame.  Showcased soild actions in the field with soft hands and fluid feet.  Clean exchange.  Plays through the ball well.  Works well around the bag.  Across the diamond was 71 mph.  Offensively, starts from a balanced setup.  Loads back.  Short stride.  Average use of the lower half.  Showcased above average bat speed with a good approach.  Short, level path the baseball.  Rhythm is a little stiff.  Shows some strength at the plate with gap to gap potential.  Registered an exit velo of 83 mph.  

2017's

Jason Lamont, 3B, Lake Central HS, 2017
: 6-foot-1, 170 pound sophomore possesses a lanky, athletic frame.  Ran a 7.68-60 at the event.  Defensively, displayed good hands with fluid footwork.  Clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball with some athleticism.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup.  Stride is short.  Smooth load back.  Short path to the ball with average bat speed.  Line drive hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 77 mph.  

2018's 

Julian Rutherford, 3B, Griffith HS, 2018: 5-foot-9, 165 pound freshman showcased solid actions in the field.  Good glove for a 2018.  Clean exchange, has the ability to get rid of it.  Accurate arm across the diamond at 75 mph.  Lacks elite foot speed.  Offensively, hits from an open stance.  Loads back.  Long stride.  Tendency to close himself off after the stride. Average use of the lower half and average balance.  Very good approach for a 2018.  Hands work, long path.  Pull-side hitter.  Overall fluid rhythm.  Needs to continue to add strength at the plate. Shows some athleticism.  Registered an exit velo of 78 mph.
