Finally, we were able to get one of our Preseason events off the ground in Nova Scotia at the end of March and get a first hand look at some of the talent in the province. A great day overall with lots of gains and positive changes in players, we take a look at 5 pitchers who really caught our attention as a staff and made some noticeable improvements to their game.

Hunter Canning RHP / Auburn Drive , NS / 2020

Report: Canning showed fluid arm action combined with a very workable frame at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds. With an easy delivery, he sat 80-81mph which was down from his usual mid 80's fastball due to a minor back injury. He showed a solid breaking ball at 68-70mph with good depth and sharp horizontal break partnered with quality arm side run on his changeup at 72-74 mph. If he can regain his health and usual numbers, Canning could be a diamond in the rough for any school looking for an athletic, strike throwing RHP.

Matthew Mackenzie RHP / OF / Avon View , NS / 2022

Report: At a lanky 6-foot-4 and 165-pounds, Mackenzie still has lots of room to grow and fill out. He has added some weight since the fall, and it showed with an increase in velocity up from 81mph to sitting 83-84mph with good life on his fastball. The fastball played well with good tunnelling, and a sharp curveball with late break hitting at 74 mph. The change-up paired well with his fastball and had good sinking action but needs some refinement. With a continued focus to increase in size and strength, the future looks bright for this young right-hander.

Kole Miller LHP / OF / Prince Andrew , NS / 2022

Report: At 6-foot, 220-pounds, Miller is an imposing figure on the mound. He showed an improved fastball velocity topping at 83mph, up from the fall when he sat 81mph. This strong LHP has movement on all his pitches with impressive arm side run on his heavy fastball. Combine that with a breaking ball at 64-66 mph with good depth and vertical break, and it makes for difficult at bats dissecting the zone east and west. He showed feel for a splitter and has recently added a changeup to his arsenal which he is working to refine. He's one to keep an eye on as velocity and strength increase along with this new pitch.

Parker Hanrahan LHP / Glace Bay , NS / 2021

Report: This intriguing left-hander showed well at his first PBR event, displaying feel for all of his pitches. Hanrahan’s fastball topping out at 81mph worked well with a plus, sharp, late breaking curveball between 68-71mph. The changeup had good downward movement, and showed a difference of 8-9 mph from his fastball. Parker spun the ball really well showcasing it as his best pitch. A prototypical southpaw at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, he has room to grow. With a commitment to improving strength, he would make a solid option at the college level.

Lucas Taylor RHP / SS / Lockview , NS / 2023

Report: This 2023 grad opened some eyes at his first PBR event pounding the zone with a
fastball between 73-76mph. Taylor is a two sport athlete and it showed with his athletic make-up, and easy arm action. A hard slider impressed with a horizontal break at 67-69mph and matched well with his fastball. The changeup is still a work in progress for this young pitcher but had good downward movement, late break and arm side run at 68-71 mph. Taylor is working on improving lower half mechanics and feeling comfortable with the changeup to accompany his easy arm action. He projects well, and we’re excited to see the improvements that follow.
