Joe Quelch led the PBR Maryland ranked No. 22 Bishop McNamara Mustangs with a complete game shut out victory on the mound as the Mustange defeated Bishop Denis J. O'Connell Knights 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

In a battle of the top two teams in the WCAC South Division, the Mustangs were able to strike first in the bottom of the first inning off the bat of 2021 C Ryan Shieh (Maryland) who hit an RBI single to left to get the scoring started. After that pitching on both sides took over.

Quelch got the start for the Mustangs and really took over the game, shutting down the Knights offense from the get go, only allowing a single off the bat of 2020 SS Eddie Eisert (NC State) thru the first six innings. Quelch used a steady diet of fastball and breaking ball to keep most hitters off balance. He would scatter two hits with three strikeouts and two walks in the game.

His O'Connell counterpart was also ready in this bout, as 2019 LHP Peter Colevas after giving up the first inning run settled down and quieted the Mustang offense thru five innings. Colevas went six innings allowing three runs (2 earned) and struck out 10 while issuing only two walks.

The Mustangs were finally able to get some insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning after a leadoff triple off the bat of Ian Cawthorne got the frame started. a strikeout, intentional walk and strikeout would follow and McNamara looked to be in trouble to take advantage of two runners in scoring position with one out. That all changed when 1B Jared Mammano was able to place a groundball down the first base line that rolled into right field for a double, allowing both runs to score and giving the Mustangs the insurance they were looking for. Quelch made quick work of the seventh inning as McNamara were able to close it out and extend their lead in the South Division.

Eisert and Joe Suarez led the Knights offense with a hit apiece.

Shieh had an hit and RBI, while Mammano led the way with two RBI on one hit. Cawthorne added one hit as well to lead the Mustangs.

McNamara will get back on the field the next day as they stay at their friendly confines and host St. Mary's Ryken on Wednesday. O'Connell return home on Thursday for another challenge as they host the North Division's top team in PBR VA/DC No. 2 ranked St. John's College.
