OK Great Plains Summer Championships Scout Blog: Day 3 at ORU

We had a great day of baseball on day one here at the Great Plains Summer Championship. There was talent all over the field in both the 16U and 17U division on day 2. Below are our notes on top performers from the games at ORU. 

Game 1 
Sandlot OKC Ubbenga vs MVP 15U

Matt Holzhammer, 1B, Wister, 2021
A physically advanced thick and broad shoulder frame. The right-handed hitter bats from an open and athletic set up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a moderate leg kick before launching his hands on an efficient and slightly uphill path with barrel strength. In the game, went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run scored, and four RBI.

Garrett Long, SS, Adair, 2021
A 6-foot, 170-pound lean and athletic frame. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from a back leg heavy heavy set-up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a small knee-knock leg kick before pulling his hands through a flat path through extension. Defensively, he shows advanced hands and feet along with an accurate arm. Long went 1-for-1 at the dish in this one. 

Bagley
Kyndon Lovell, LHP, Lokeba-Sickles, 2022
A lean, quick twitch, and athletic 6-foot, 160-pound frame with lots of room to add size and strength. On the mound, the left-hander works from a slightly up tempo and athletic delivery with rhythm. Arm action is short, quick, and fluid coming through a high-¾ slot. Fastball sits 86-88 with occasional arm side. Curveball is elite at 75-77 mph with tight spin and  late 1/7 depth. Lovell tossed 5 innings and allowed just 1 hit and walked 4 while punching out 5. 

Jayden Graves, RHP, Fort Gibson, 2022
A very projectable long and athletic 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame with lots or room to add size and strength. Works from a simple and repeatable delivery with quality leg drive down the mound. Arm action is moderate with a quick change of direction in the back before coming through a high-3/4 slot with very little effort. Fastball sat 80-85 mph and touched 87 in his first inning of work and he settled in at 80-83 in his second inning. Graves tossed two complete innings punching out three and only allowing one hit. 

Max Brown, SS, Wagoner, 2022
A lean and athletic 6-foot, 165-pound frame with bloodlines and lots of room to add size and strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a slightly front foot heavy, relaxed, and upright set up with some rhythm in his hands. Uses a slight knee-knock leg kick before launching his hands on a flat path through extension. Brown was on time and balanced all weekend long shows some bat speed. Went 2-for-2 with a walk in this one.

A 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame with room to add size and strength. On the mound, the right-hander works from a controlled tempo delivery with a high leg kick before gliding down the mound. Arm action has moderate length in the back before coming through a near over the top slot. Fastball sits 80-83 mph touching 84, some strikes. In one inning of work, allowed no hits, no runs, and one walk. 

Baez
Braeden Jones, SS, Mustang, 2021
A 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame that has started to fill out and is showing some strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a slightly narrow, but athletic set up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a moderate stride before launching his hands on a slightly uphill path with some bat speed. Defensively, shows advanced actions with his hands and feet with quick lateral movement. In the game, made a few solid defensive plays and went 1-for-3 with an RBI. 

Game 4

TJ Smith, SS/RHP, Capitol Christian, 2021
A 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame with athleticism. On the mound, the right-hander works multiple deliveries and timings to create deception. Arm action is short, clean, and fluid in the back before coming through a 3/4 slot with arm speed. Fastball shows occasional arm-side run at 84-86 T87, almost all strikes. Slider has 10/4 shape and some late depth, mostly strikes. Also mixes in a changeup with some fade. Smith was dominant for three innings, punching out five. 

Saxton Brown, RHP, Folsom, 2021
A physically advanced 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame packed with strength. On the mound the right-hander works from a slightly up tempo deliver before striding down the mound.  Arm action is long and clean in the back before coming through a near over the top slot with some arm strength. Fastball shows consistent and big cut 81-85 mph with some strikes. Curveball flashes big depth with near 12/6 shape at 68-70 mph. 

MVP
Cade Shatwell, RHP, Tuttle, 2022
A very projectable 6-foot-2, 155-pound loose and athletic frame with lots of room to add size and strength. On the mound, the right-hander works from a controlled tempo delivery with a moderate leg kick before gliding down the mound. Arm breaks early and is long in the back before coming through a high-¾ slot with length. Fastball ranges 82-86 touching 87 mph with consistent and heavy arm-side run. Slider is sharp with tight spin and late depth at 73-78 mph. 

Game 5

Aaron Weber, RHP, Edmond Memorial, 2021 
A long 6-foot-4, 190-pound lean and long frame that oozes projectability. On the mound the right-hander works from a simple delivery with rhythm and moderate leg kick before gliding down the mound with very little effort in his delivery. Arm action is short and clean in the back before coming through an over the top slot. Fastball seems to jump on hitters at 80-85 touching 86 mph, mostly strikes. Offspeed is still developing. Weber did have a statistically stellar day, but the projection is undeniable. 

Jonah Mahen, SS/RHP, Crossings Christian, 2021
A quick twitch 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame.The right-hander works from a slightly up tempo delivery with a high leg kick before striding down the mound quickly. Arm action is long and quick in the back before coming through a near over the top slot with arm speed. Fastball keeps its plane at 84-86 touching 87 mph. Curveball has gradual 11/5 shape at 69-71 mph. In the game, Mahen went two innings walking two, punching out two, allowing one hit and giving up one run. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an open and upright set up with rhythm in his high set hands. Uses a smooth load and long stride before launching his hands on a flat path with bat speed through extension. In the game, showed excellent barrel control going 3-for-3 with an RBI against quality arms. 

Glad
Gunner McCollough, RHP, Coweta, 2021
A physically advanced 6-foot-3, 215-pound frame packed with strength. On the mound, the right-hander works from a controlled delivery with a moderate leg kick and coiling load at the the top before striding down the mound with quality leg drive. Arm action is moderate in the back, hiding behind his body before coming through a high-3/4 slot with arm strength. Fastball keeps its plane at 85-86 T87 mostly strikes. Off speed is developing. McCollough tossed 2.1 allowing three hits, one walk, no runs and punched out three.
