Ohio Spotlight Game: #13 Solon vs #44 Strongsville

SOLON - A pitching duel in Solon between two of the state’s top pitchers leads to a combined 3 runs, 7 hits, and 19 strikeouts. #13 Solon came into the day looking for their first win after losing to top ranked Massillon Jackson. #44 Strongsville had a tough first week, going 0-3, with loses to top ranked teams like #3 Moeller and #2 Mason.

Solon came out on top in this one, winning by a shutout score of 3-0. Casey Maniglia (North Carolina commit, #4 ranked in 2018 class) started on the mound for Solon, facing off against Matt Brosky (Ohio University commit, #35 ranked in 2018 class).

It didn’t take long for Solon to get on the board in this one, but runs didn’t come easily. 3-hole hitter Ryan McCurry (Uncommitted, #24 ranked in 2018 class) drew a two out walk and got to show off his speed early. On a 3-2 count, McCurry was off and running. Cleanup hitter Joe Paskell (Unsigned senior) singled to left center and McCurry, who runs a 6.4 60, easily scored from first.

Controversy came in the bottom of the third.

Grant Schwartz led off the inning with a walk and Anthony Zavarelli was able to beat out an infield single. The next hitter, McCurry, sat back on a hanging curveball that he drove deep to left field. Jack Frank (Michigan State commit, #1 ranked in 2019 class) had a good read on the ball that was hit over his head. Frank reached up to snag the ball, but when he went to turn to throw the ball back in to stop the runners from tagging up, Frank dropped the ball. He gathered the ball, threw it to shortstop Kyler Damm (Marietta College commit), who threw the ball away trying to throw out Schwartz at third. No signal was made by the field umpire for an out on the catch, and after a meeting with the home plate umpire, McCurry was awarded second base on what seemed to be a spectacular catch by Frank, but was then given an error.

Solon tacked on the third and final run of the game in the fifth, when Schwartz led off the inning with a single to right field, leadoff hitter JT Caver bunted him over to second, Zavarelli was hit by a pitch, and McCurry drew a walk to load the bases. Paskell was due up again with the bases loaded and on what I thought was a ball that was going to leave the park, Strongsville right fielder Zach Kasian was able to track down the long fly ball on the warning track, giving Solon a third run on Paskell’s sac fly.

McCurry pitched the final two innings after Maniglia pitched a strong 5 innings, striking out 5, allowing just 2 hits to Strongsville hitters. McCurry was able to get out of a seventh inning jam, striking out the final two Strongsville hitters with runners on second and third.

Top Performers on the day:
  • Solon RHP Casey Maniglia - Went 5 innings for the win, striking out 8, allowing just 2 hits, while walking 4.
  • Solon OF/RHP Ryan McCurry - McCurry looked sharp in the outfield showing off his speed and arm. At the plate, went 0-1 with 2 walks and a run.
  • Solon 2017 Joe Paskell - The cleanup hitter showed good power to all fields going 1-2 with an RBI single to left, and an RBI Sac Fly to right field.
  • Strongville RHP Matt Brosky - The right-hander went 4.1 innings, striking out 6, giving up 3 runs (2 ER), and walking 2. Both walks came around to score.
