Ohio Spotlight Game: #27 Amherst Steele vs Westlake

Amherst blew open a tight ballgame with a seven run seventh inning en route to a decisive 11-3 victory over host Westlake.

Westlake jumped ahead in the bottom of the second inning when three consecutive two-out hits by senior DH Logan Fisher, junior second baseman Billy Blood, and junior shortstop Ethan Kosco netted a single run before Amherst junior right-hander Xaxier Moore strike out the final batter to limit the damage.

Moore was solid for the Comets of Amherst as he did not allow another hit until the sixth inning as he used his fastball and slider to keep the Demons off balance. He finished with six innings four hits, a walk and four strikeouts.

Westlake senior right-hander (Wooster commit) Max Lackner was equally impressive as he carried a two-hitter into the fourth inning with a 1-0 lead.

Amherst’s junior Chad Jones got a big two-out two-run single to left, scoring Joe Masters and and Isaac Walts who singled. Following an error which moved Jones to second, junior centerfielder Evan Shawver delivers a line drive to center field to drive in Jones with the third run in the inning.

Shaver added another run for Amherst in the sixth after he doubled with two outs and came home on a Mark Harris single, making the score 4-1.

Amherst then sealed the win with a huge seven run seventh inning highlighted by Shawver fourth hit of the game, a triple in the right center gap, and senior first baseman Casey Mconihe who got two singles in the inning.

The Demons fought hard and scratched out two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 11-3.

Amherst moves on to the Lorain District Semi Finals at The Pipeyard this Wednesday.
