Ohio Underclass Games: Team 3 Player Analysis

Adam Purdy, OF, Elida HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 165-pound outfielder with long, thin frame. Throws with short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 76 mph. Throws uphill. Average feet and hands. Needs to decrease transfer time. Overall, athletic prospect that projects as left or center field type. At the plate, he starts in a tall stance from the left side. Uses a short stride. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Ran a 4.22 out of the box.

Alex Laikos, C, Wadsworth HS, 2015

6-foot, 175-pound catcher with strong, athletic frame. One of the top catchers in his class for Ohio. Shows good catch and receive skills. Tends to start a bit wide behind the plate, which hinders lateral movement at times. Short, compact transfer out of the crouch. Top velocity of 76 mph on his throws. Recorded pop times between 2.01-2.12 with accuracy. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses short stride. Tends to wrap a bit his load, but gets his hands into loaded position. Good balance. Shows some quickness in his hands (85 mph exit velocity off the tee). Line drive type hitter with some pull pop in his bat. Hit the ball well in game action. Excellent athlete. Ran a 4.22 out of the box.

Andrew Wodzisz, RHP/1B, Mason HS, 2016

6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect with big, thick frame. At first base, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 67 mph. Offensively, he uses short stride. Takes level path to the ball. Will improve with enhanced load and more use of his lower half. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 5.41 out of the box. On the mound, he threw with average arm speed and short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Regular effort to his delivery. Fastball was straight at 74-75 mph. Breaking ball showed gradual 11/5 action at 66-68 mph.

Austin Cline, RHP/3B, Ben Logan HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect with average frame. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 75 mph. Needs to continue improving footwork and quickness of exchange. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with an open stance. Uses a short stride. Hands to get away from body in his load. Pull tendencies in the swing. Registered top exit velocity of 74 mph. Ran a 5.04 out of the box. On the mound, he uses a tall and fall type delivery. Shows average arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat at 76-78 mph. Shows 65-67 mph breaking ball. Velocity will improve with improved use of lower half.

Brad Wilson, RHP, Northridge HS, 2015

6-foot-1, 225-pound right-handed pitcher with solid frame. Throws with short arm action and quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot. Slow tempo to his delivery. Will benefit by keeping momentum with his lower half towards the plate. Fastball sat 84-87 mph. More velocity to come. Relies on a 74-77 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action. Also showed a 79 mph changeup.

Chris Slavik, RHP/SS, Bishop Watterson HS, 2015

5-foot-8, 150-pound prospect with small, athletic build. Projects as a pitcher at this stage. Demonstrated command of three pitches. Throws with quick arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat 83-85 mph with some late life. Filled up the zone with the pitch. Uses a 67-69 mph breaking ball with sharp 11/5 break. Tended to be up in the zone on this occasion, but showed two planes and ability to keep hitters off balance. Also uses a 78 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed with some fade. In the field, he uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 78 mph across the infield. Showed average hands and feet. Transfer gets a bit long. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride. Takes short, level path to the ball with some line drive production. Registered top exit velocity of 78 mph. Ran a 4.69 out of the box.

CJ Stablein, OF/IF, Olentangy Orange HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 165-pound prospect with strong, athletic frame. Uses short, stiff arm action in the field. From the outfield, he reached a top velocity of 79 mph. Shows some athleticism and plays through the ball. In the infield, he tends to be flat footed. Will improve as he creates angles and plays on the toes of his feet. At the plate, he is a linear hitter. Starts heavy on his back side. Uses a leg kick and long stride. Arm tends to bar in his load. Still shows obvious strength in his hands and squares the ball up. Registered a top exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee. Ran a 4.51 out of the box. Plenty of raw, athleticism with potential.

Clayton Surrell, RHP/IF, Pickerington Central HS, 2016

5-foot-11, 165-pound two-way prospect. Shows most advanced skills on the mound. Throws downhill through high ¾ to over the top arm slot. Shows some quickness in his arm. Regular effort to his delivery. Fastball sat at 81-82 mph with some natural run. Uses a 66-68 mph breaking ball with 11/5 break and good, two-plane depth. Also showed a 76 mph changeup. In the field, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Takes good routes to the ball and shows some softness in his hands. Reached top velocity of 82 mph across the infield. Can play either middle spot. At the plate, he starts with a wide, open stance. Hands work through the zone. Registered top exit velocity of 89 mph. Showed opposite field production in his swing. Will improve as lower half and balance improve. Ran a 4.4 out of the box. 

Colton Caughenbaugh, 1B, Licking Valley HS, 2016

5-foot-11, 195-pound prospect with strong, muscular frame. Big time bat from the left side. Good balance. Stays behind the baseball. Takes uphill path to the ball. Drove multiple balls out of OSU’s Bill Davis stadium in batting practice. Consistently squared up the baseball. One of the top swings at the Underclass Games event. Defensively, he plays an adequate first base. Needs to continue improving footwork and accuracy on his throws.

Dante Brammer, 1B/LHP, Trimble Local HS, 2016

5-foot-9, 165-pound prospect with an average, soft frame. Shows hitch in his arm action. Reached a top velocity of 69 mph on his throws from a high ¾ arm slot. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a leg kick in his load. Takes uphill path to the ball. Max effort swing. Pull type hitter. Fastball sat 72-73 mph and breaking ball sat at 63-64 mph. Delivery requires some effort.

Derek Carr, LHP, Licking Valley HS, 2016

6-foot, 167-pound southpaw with projectable frame. Delivery is clean. Throws with some quickness through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball shows good cut at 79-80 mph. Relies on a 70 mph breaking ball with soft 1/7 action. Located the pitch well for strikes and kept hitters off balance. Also uses a 77 mph changeup that needs additional development.

Evan Gilliam, C, Tippecanoe HS, 2015

5-foot-11, 180-pound catching prospect. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 72 mph out of the crouch. Pop times ranged between 2.35 to 2.46. Will improve with shortening of transfer and footwork. At the plate, he starts in a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride. Hands get away from his body in his load, which creates some length to his path. Still shows some quickness (exit velocity of 80 mph). Created consistent contact at the plate. Ran a 4.48 out of the box.

Joshua Hammerton, OF, Alliance HS, 2015

5-foot-10, 165-pound outfield prospect with average, athletic frame. From the outfield, he shows short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 74 mph with accuracy. Shows average feet and exchange. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in a slight crouch. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Registered top exit velocity of 79 mph. Ran a 4.34 out of the box.

Matthew DiDonato, IF, Edgewood Senior HS, 2016

5-foot-10, 145-pound infielder with average, thin frame. In the field, he uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Tends to windup his exchange. Second base type at this point. Reached a top velocity of 76 mph across the infield. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in athletic stance. Uses a short stride. Registered top exit velocity of 72 mph. Takes short, level path to the ball. Contact type hitter. Will improve with additional maturation and physical strength. Ran a 4.72 out of the box.

Mitchell Stammen, RHP/SS, St. Henry HS, 2016

6-foot, 170-pound prospect with solid, athletic frame for his age. Projects as a pitcher at this stage. Throws through high ¾ arm slot with long arm action. Shows some quickness in his arm. Fastball sat at 82-84 mph with some run. Relies on a 62-65 mph breaking ball with gradual 11/5 movement. Tends to slow down his arm speed with the pitch, but still locates the pitch effectively for strikes. In the field, he uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Average hands and feet. Needs to play through the ball. Reached top velocity of 72 mph. At the plate, he starts from a wide stance. Uses a leg kick in his load. Takes slight uphill path to the ball. Registered top exit velocity of 79 mph. Ran a 4.5 out of the box.

Nate Monastra, C, Olentangy HS, 2016

5-foot-11, 165-pound catcher with durable, athletic frame. Shows short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Feet shows some quickness and good direction. Reached top velocity of 75 mph out of the crouch. Pop times between 2.19 to 2.27. Should only get better with strength and time. At the plate, he starts in a tall, slightly open stance. Uses a smooth, simple load. Hands drop a bit into hitting slot. Shows some quickness in his hands (82 mph exit velocity off the tee). Takes short, level path to the ball. Line drive production out of the swing. Ran a 4.37 out of the box.

Nicholas Rose, C, Olentangy HS, 2015

5-foot-8, 140-pound catcher with small, athletic frame. Starts from wide base in the crouch. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Reached top velocity of 72 mph. Pop times between 2.21 to 2.43. Will get better with improved footwork. At the plate, the left-handed hitter uses a short stride. Good use of lower half. Shows some balance through his swing. Line drive production in his swing with occasional pop. Pull tendencies in his swing. Ran a 4.95 out of the box.

Nick Bebout, RHP, Wadsworth HS, 2015

6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher with strong, physical frame. Shows quick arm speed and short arm action through over the top arm slot. Fastball is downhill at 84-85 mph. Shows some deception and gets on hitters quick. Locates inside and out. Breaking ball sat at 75-76 mph with 12/6 action down in the zone. Swing and miss type pitch that hitter’s struggled to pick up and make contact. 

Nick Moser, OF, Big Walnut HS, 2016

5-foot-7, 142-pound outfielder with small, athletic build. Showed long arm action through ¾ arm slot with a top velocity of 73 mph. Athletic type that plays through the baseball. The left-handed hitting outfielder starts in a tall stance. Uses small leg kick with a short stride. Doesn’t clear his front side. Contact type hitter that uses his speed to create opportunities. Ran a 4.03 out of the box

Pavin Parks, SS, Louisville HS, 2015

6-foot, 165-pound middle infield prospect with athletic frame. Uses short arm action with a quick transfer. Reached a top velocity of 74 mph. Throws well from all angles. Likely projects as a second base type at the next level, but with increased arm strength, could stay on the left side of the infield. Offensively, from the left side of the plate, he shows good balance. Utilizes his lower half. Hands work on a level plane through the zone. Line drive production in his swing. Registered a top exit velocity of 83 mph. Ran a 4.57 out of the box.

Reed Norris, 3B/1B, Heath HS, 2015

6-foot-4, 206-pound prospect with long, athletic frame. Corner infield type that has the ability to stay on the left side with quicker transfer. Uses short arm action through ¾ to high ¾ arm slot. Shows some strength to his throws. Reached a top velocity of 80 mph across the infield. Looks natural receiving the ball. Also worked out at first, but looks more comfortable at third. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a slightly open stance. Uses a short stride. Good balance in his swing. Projects as a middle of the order type bat. Big frame with plenty of room to add weight. Takes short, slight uphill path to the ball.

Zack Blair, IF, Tippecanoe HS, 2015

5-foot-11, 170-pound infield prospect with average, athletic frame. Projects as a second base type at the next level. Throws through low ¾ to ¾ arm slot. Good feel and actions in the field. Some quickness in his exchange. At the plate, he starts in a balanced, athletic stance. Uses a compact swing. Little wasted movement. Line drive type production. Average type hitter. Registered top exit velocity of 80 mph. Ran a 4.46 out of the box.
