One tweet changed recruiting for Russell County RHP/SS Tyler Robertson

Russell County HS senior Tyler Robertson had a stellar junior season on the diamond for the Lakers last spring.  The 6-foot-2, 180-pound RHP/SS compiled a .509 batting average with 20 doubles, 7 HRs, and 41 RBI.   Add to that a 6-1 record on the mound, and it’s easy to see why Robertson achieved first-team All-State honors.

Despite the recognition he received by the high school coaches in the state, Robertson was a late arriver on the recruiting scene.

“I really didn’t have a whole lot going on,” Robertson said.

That is, until a few months ago, when Russell County head coach David Rexroat hosted a workout.

Robertson threw a bullpen session in that workout and lit up the radar gun, clocking consistently at 88-91 mph.  Prep Baseball Report sent out a tweet reporting Robertson’s velocity, and the rest is history.

“Coach Rexroat started receiving calls and emails within an hour after PBR sent out that tweet,” Robertson said.  “Within a couple of weeks I had heard from schools from several different states and even a few pro scouts.”

Robertson committed to John A Logan College, a junior college in southern Illinois, at the end of January.

“I think from a financial standpoint, the junior college route makes sense for me," Robertson said.

When asked about his goals for the upcoming high school baseball season, Robertson said: “I would like to win 10 games on the mound and hit .500 for the season.  I also need 4 RBIs to break the career RBI record at Russell County, so that is obviously something I will be looking to do early in the season.

“As far as team goals, we lost in the fourth region semi-finals last year, and I would like to make it farther.  There are some very tough schools to get past in our region, but hopefully we can do that this year.”

Russell County, ranked No. 10 in the PBR Power 25, opens the season tomorrow with a tough double header against No. 7 Henderson County and No. 17 Bowling Green.
