Ontario Insider: Tournament 12 - Futures Team vs Team Anlantic

Rogers Centre: The Futures fourth game of Tournament 12 was a do or die situation for the young 2018 and 2019 grads. Win, and they secure a spot for the first time in tournament history, lose, and it is back to school Monday morning.

For team Atlantic, the Futures showed their age early on, committing two errors in the first inning that allowed Atlantic to take a 2-0 lead. BC starter Taisei Yahiro worked three innings, giving up four runs with only two being earned. 2019 catcher Owen Diodati was able to end the first inning before it got out of control as he was able to throw out Atlantic base runner to end the inning.

The Futures were only able to muster two hits in the first six innings courtesy of Tyrell Schofield and Cam Sanderson. Schofield was thrown out to end the second while Sanderson was left stranded in the fourth.

2018 right-hander Ryan Douglas entered the game in the fourth inning and proceeded to work three innings, only giving up one unearned run while striking out three and giving up two hits. Douglas used all three pitches in his appearance and was able to produce weak contact and work ahead in the count.

The Futures did show some life in the top of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate and getting into the Atlantic bullpen. A leadoff walk by Jaden Brown, followed by a base hit by Ian Jordan got the ball rolling. An RBI by Schofield, followed by a walk to Diodati and a hit by pitch by Blake Buckle loaded the bases, but a strikeout and flyout to right-field ended the game and any hopes of the Futures team advancing to the playoffs.

In years past, guys like Adam Hall, Cooper Davis, Dondrae Bremner and Noah Naylor have all suited up for the Futures team. This crop of talent seems to be following in their footsteps with lots of athletic players, loose arms, and promising looking bodies. The experience and reps will come for these young players, and in time, they are going to be in the spotlight as they continue their paths towards the college recruiting process and the MLB draft.

The future here in Ontario is on the right track, with the 2018 and 2019 classes loaded with talent that is can’t miss. We look forward to continuing to follow these players and tracking their development.
