Ontario Insider: Tournament 12 - Ontario Green vs British Columbia

Rogers Centre: Ontario Green was playing for pride. With them being officially eliminated from playoff contention, it was a chance to get everyone into the game and play against one of Ontario’s rivals in British Columbia. With BC already capturing the number one seed in pool play, it was a chance for them to stay sharp against a loaded team of prospects from Ontario.

Right-hander and uncommitted 2017 prospect Jonathan Burkhart was on the mound to start for Ontario, and Burkhart did what we have seen so often. He used all his pitches, pounded the zone and limited his walks while working three scoreless, giving up one hit and striking out two. He was followed by four different pitchers who all worked one inning each, combining for seven strikeouts, giving up one run on four hits.

The offence started early for Ontario as they went on to put up a five spot in the first inning. They brought 10 players to the plate, with Vanderbilt commit Cooper Davis getting things started with a sharp line drive to right-field. Jake Ervin, Jameson Hart, and Kurt Dawkins had the other big hits to push runs across and give Ontario some early breathing room.

Things settled down for both clubs until a two out base knock by Hart, just out of the reach of shortstop Jason Willow brought in Ervin who walked earlier to push the lead to 6-0. Two more runs scored in the sixth, courtesy of a leadoff single and stolen base by Dawkins, followed by a double by Davis who then proceeded to steal third and scored on a groundout by Brett Corbeth.

That was all the scoring for Green as they played their most complete game of the tournament. Five different arms combined to hold BC to one run, and although Ontario did not advance to the semifinal round, they still showed why they were one of the favourites heading in and full of uncommitted prospects who should see some early commitments come this November.
