Ontario Scout Blog: FH vs Nats

Luis Pimentel Guerrero OF / SS / Corpus Christi, ON / 2022

Report: Pimentel-Guerrero, an uncommitted 2022, hits every time we see him, and that was the same story Saturday. He displays advanced pitch recognition, is fairly conservative—not swinging at many balls, but is geared to swing within the zone. He puts together quality at-bats. Mechanically, he’s quiet with a still head, his hands work short and quick, and it's a loose, whippy swing. He reacts to FB’s, has shown the ability to utilize the whole field and does so with solid line-drive contact. He generates sneaky pop, as evidenced on Saturday as he drove a pitch off the wall on a bounce to right-center field. He wasn't tested much in the outfield, but showed off his arm strength on one occasion, letting off a throw that displayed on-line carry w/ proper throwing mechs. He shouldn't be uncommitted for long, and will be one of the more intriguing follows over the next year.

Eric Calder 1B / LHP / Thomas A. Blakelock, ON / 2022

Report: Calder, a two-way guy, seemed to barrel up pitches every time he stepped up to the plate during game action over the weekend. He's a left-handed hitter who works with a slight hand load and toe-tap and looks to do damage early and often. He takes aggressive hacks, makes efficient use out of his lower half, gets off his backside, and works inside and on-plane with a high finish. He's a 2022 grad who's an intriguing follow in the box.

Nathan Farquharson OF / Notre Dame, ON / 2021

Report: Farquharson, a 5-foot-10, 145-pound outfielder has improved over the offseason and was productive in game action. He's a punch & judy hitter, and found some holes resulting in hits. He’s patient at the plate and showed the ability to cover the zone. He’s a 2021 outfielder who provides some value in the outfield, and doesn't try to do too much at the plate, putting together good at-bats.

Noah Garrah RHP / 1B / Mother Teresa Catholic, ON / 2022

Report: 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-hander from the Nationals who filled up the zone on Saturday and kept opposing hitters off balance with a good curveball. The fastball was up to 81 mph but you can typically expect a bit more velo from Garrah, who’s been up to 85 mph this summer. The arm is short in the back and he throws from a ¾ arm slot. Curveball had depth and the command was there with the offspeed stuff, which he used to his advantage. An uncommitted 2022 to keep tabs on as games begin to pick up again in Ontario.

Ethan Schofield RHP / SS / N/A, ON / 2022

Report: Schofield, a lanky, projectable right-hander at 6-foot, 150-pounds who showed some upside on the mound Saturday. It’s an up tempo delivery and he worked almost exclusively with his fastball that was up to 81 mph. There’s potential and projectability on the mound with Schofield and some development of his secondary offerings could be big for him as it looks like the velo will continue to elevate.

Xavier Hopkins 3B / RHP / Jacob Hespeler, ON / 2022

Report: A big, strong 6-foot-5, 210-pound two-way player from the Nationals who we saw at third-base on Saturday. Hopkins, a 2022 grad, swings it from the right-side and the power potential at the dish is what’s most intriguing from Hopkins. There’s bat speed and loft in the swing to go along with the raw power. Arm strength over at third and no issues getting the ball across the diamond. Profiles as a corner guy on the infield but with the size and frame it would be interesting to get a look at Hopkins on the mound.
