The Patrick Henry Patriots (Roanoke) hosted the Fighting Hornets of Orange County in a Region 5D elimination game. The Hornets hitting machine and excellent mound work by pitcher, Cannon Davies, downed the Pats 16-4.

Hornets did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard in the first inning. Lead-off batter, Christian Koontz, drove the first pitch of the game over the leftfield fence for a home run. Catcher, Keenan Williams singled, and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Davies helped his own cause singling to leftfield, scoring Williams, and the Hornets were on top 2-0.

In the home second, the Patriots rallied with a single from Spencer Wright and a walk to shortstop, Carter Plunkett. Third baseman, John Stockstill, hitting from the seven spot in the line-up, bashed a three run home run to deep left center field, stealing the lead from the Hornets, 3-2.

Koontz led off the third with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Williams walked, and Davies reached on a one out walk. DH Zach Cubbage reached on an infield single, pushing Koontz across the plate and tying the game 3-3. Bryce Schaar’s two run single scored Williams and Davies, and Schaar was batted in by Will Dawson.  In the bottom of the frame, Plunkett doubled and Eric Mendelowitz drove him home on a opposite field single. The Patriot’s would not score again.

In the visitors fourth, the Hornets piled on with five more runs. Koontz, Williams, and Tucker Hensley drew walks and Davies scored all the base runners with a gap double. Cubbage reached on an error and Schaar picked up two more RBI’s scoring Davies and Cubbage.

Orange County picked up four more runs in the fifth, with hits from Hensly, Davies, and Jake Guempel. Davies went five innings on the mound, allowed five hits, three strikeouts, four walks and was 3-4 at the plate. Bryce Schaar had four RBI’s.

Orange County moves on in the tournament.
