PBR New England Spotlight Game: St. John's Prep vs Malden Catholic

On a beautiful late morning for baseball the St. John’s Prep Eagles were able to edge out the Lancers of Malden Catholic 4-3 with a final inning comeback.

Lancers starter, RHP Anthony DeSouza (URI) was outstanding through the 4th inning, allowing just two walks to go along with eight strikeouts.

However, he was pulled before the 5th, when junior centerfielder Kellen Field took over. With the aid of a couple errors and a big game winning RBI double by Prep senior first baseman Andrew Selima, the win was secure.

Senior RHP Brendan Powicki was wild at times for St. John’s but made it through 5-plus innings before RHP Casey Bussone came in to shut the door and earn the victory.

After a very quick 1st inning, Malden Catholic got things going in the 2nd inning.

Field and junior DH Nick Dascoli walked to start the frame. After a fielder’s choice erased Field, senior third baseman Brendan LaVallee (AIC) singled to right, plating Dascoli.

Senior catcher Frank Celona (Franklin Pierce) followed with a line single to left, scoring another to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead. They would add another the following inning after senior right fielder Ethan Harris (SNHU) tripled to the gap in right-center and scored a batter later on an error by the shortstop.

Everything changed when DeSouza left the game as the Eagles were able to score two on Field in the 5th.

Senior Jacob Spada and DH Sean McGinnis got the Eagles into the hit column with singles with one out. Classmate Jack Lambert then reached on an error to load the bases. Sophomore third baseman Michael Yarin then hit a high fly ball down the left field line that was misplayed, allowing two runs to come across, cutting the deficit to one.

Powicki would settle down before being replaced by Bussone as the score remained 3-2 headed into the top of the 7th inning.

McGinnis started the inning with an infield single and was pinch-run for by junior Joe Masterson, who abruptly stole second.

A fly-out moved Masterson to third and Yarin followed with a double to right to tie the game.

One out later, it was the big two-out double by Selima that gave St. John’s the 4-3 lead. Bussone retired the side in order in the 7th and the win was secure.
