PBR Spotlight Game: Bridgewater-Raynham vs Xaverian

The bats were out early and often for Bridgewater-Raynham (B-R), as 17 hits and 10 runs proved to be enough to hold off the Hawks of Xaverian.

Junior LHP Alex McGrath earned the victory despite not having his best stuff. He allowed four runs on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts in five innings.

Senior Andrew Noviello (25th round pick of Red Sox) came on for the final four frames and dominated by striking out ten and allowing three hits and one run with one walk. Noviello also got it done with the bat, recording four hits including two doubles.

Teammate and senior first baseman Paul LaFond added three more to lead a Trojan offense that received an RBI from eight different players. Junior RHP Blake DeCarr took the loss giving up six runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.

The control problems for McGrath allowed Xaverian to get something going in the 1st.

Senior left fielder Trevor McQuade walked and stole second a batter later. Hawks center fielder and senior Jake Farrell followed with a walk of his own and both runners advanced after a wild pitch. Classmate and right fielder Noah Sorrento then grounded to short, scoring McQuade and advancing Farrell to third. DeCarr drew the third walk of the inning and then a second wild pitch brought Farrell around to score and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

The Trojans had no problem bouncing back in their half stringing together five straight singles to start the game.

Noviello, junior Michael Manning, senior Cory Wasylow, junior Zachary Nussbaum and senior DH Jack Connolly sprayed the ball all over the field in succession and just like that the game was tied. Next batter, senior third baseman Jonathon Livolsi, hit a sacrifice fly that drove in the 3rd run of the inning.

After a quiet second inning, the bats were back in the bottom of the 3rd.

With two outs LaFond singled and pinch runner Cameron Polson stole second. Senior shortstop Kyle Horsman walked, junior second baseman Nicholas Andrews singled to center, plating Polson and chasing DeCarr from the game. Junior Zachary Sette took over and Noviello followed with his third hit in as many innings, driving in Horsman. Manning then followed suit with a single of his own bringing in Andrews. After 3 it was 6-2.

B-R got it started again in the 4th with a single by Nussbaum. He was erased on a fielder’s choice by Connolly, who moved to second on an error. One batter later it was LaFond again delivering with an RBI single to center, scoring Connolly.

Xaverian would chip away however in the top of the 5th.

Senior DH Timothy Trunfio walked to lead off, moved to second on a wild pitch and finally to third after a balk. Farrell was then hit before he was caught stealing by Noviello. After an infield single by Sorrento, DeCarr singled, scoring Trunfio and then Sette singled as well, plating Sorrento and cutting the lead to 7-4.

The Trojans would add one more in their half of the 5th.

With one out, following a Noviello double and Manning walk, The Hawks brought in junior RHP Devon DiMascio. Next batter, Wasylow drove in pinch runner and sophomore Ryan Sarcione with the 8th run of the night.

Noviello took over on the mound in the 6th and immediately struck out the side.

The Trojans would make it four straight innings with a run when Livolsi singled to right with one out. Sophomore Michael Dibari pinch ran and advanced to third on a single by LaFond. Both runners would move up a base after a wild pitch and the score was 9-4 after six.

Lead off singles by Farrell and junior second baseman Troy Shepherd in the seventh and eighth innings respectively were shut down by the dominance of Noviello and his swing and miss stuff.

The Trojans would push across their final run of the evening in the 8th against the fourth pitcher of the night for Xaverian, junior Manuel Peguero.

Connolly doubled to right with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. One batter later LaFond drove in his second run of the night with a sacrifice fly to right and the lead was 10-4 heading into the final inning.

Noviello walked Trunfio to start the inning and a batter later Sorrento laced one to left that hit off the top of the fence. A passed ball would plate Trunfio and move Sorrento to third. However, the right-hander would strike out the next two batters and seal the victory for B-R.
