PBR Spotlight Game: Danvers vs Swampscott

It was a tough evening for the Big Blue of Swampscott, who committed seven errors in route to a 12-0 defeat loss to Danvers.

Danver pitcher Andrew Olszak (Danver), threw six strong innings for the victory. He scattered five hits while striking out four and walking two (one intentional).

On the other side, Corey Bleau did not have nearly as much success. He made it into the sixth before being pulled for lefty CJ Howard. Bleau allowed nine hits to the Falcons but also was let down by the errors behind him, ultimately leading to five of the eight runs he allowed being unearned.

Danvers got the scoring going with the second batter of the game.

Junior Danny Lynch crushed a fastball well over the 302 sign in right field for a home run. Olszak then reached on an error by Big Blue second baseman Leo Wile and promptly stole second. Sophomore catcher Matt Andreas then ripped a hard ground ball right through the legs of Wile, plating Olszak for the unearned run. After a single and a walk, senior DH Ryan Buchanan hit a sacrifice fly to left giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

Leading off the first for Swampscott, it appeared as though Big Blue senior catcher Ryan January hit a home run off the light tower in left-center field. However, it was ruled a double and he was eventually stranded at third.

The score remained 3-0 until the top of the third when Andreas again reached on an error and then stole second. He would later score on a bloop single to right-field by junior third baseman Tim Urczner to make it 4-0.

As each pitcher began to really settle in, The Big Blue were held to just two hits through the first five innings. The next scoring would not come until the top of the sixth.

Bleau was cruising along with two outs in the sixth when senior centerfielder Chris Valles reached on an infield single. Senior second-baseman Richie Martino then singled to right. Lynch then reached on Wile’s third error of the night, scoring Valles, making it 5-0 Falcons.

On a double-steal a pitch later, Martino successfully scored and Lynch made it to second for a 6-0 lead. Lynch then stole third and scored on a single by Olszak pushing the lead to 7-0. (Olszak would go to second after a poor throw by the rightfielder). After Olszak stole third, Andreas knocked him in with a base hit to right, knocking Bleau from the game. The score was 8-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Swampscott was able to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth but could not push a run across.

In the top of the seventh, the Falcons pushed across four more against the soft throwing Howard.

Buchanan singled, freshman first baseman Zach Dillon walked and Martino was hit by a pitch. After Lynch walked to plate a run, Olszak continued his big day with a bases clearing double to right center-field. He finished 3-5 with two stolen bases and four RBI, in addition to his great performance on the mound. The Big Blue went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half and the final score read 12-0 Danvers.
