As we put the finishing touches on the 2023 WIAA season, we’d like to recognize some of the top players in the state of Wisconsin for their consistent performances throughout the entirety of the spring season.
Over the past two weeks, we published our Player of the Year, First Team All-State, and Second Team All-State award winners. Today, we continue to wrap up our spring coverage with the Third Team All-State roster, which will be followed by the Honorable Mention list that will be released in the upcoming days.
CATCHER

Sean Reilly C / Dodgeville, WI / 2023
BRYANT & STRATTON JC (WI) COMMIT
Reilly entered the 2023 season as one of the top seniors in the southwest portion of the state, and lived up to the hype this past spring, earning him an All-State nomination, and Third Team award. The catcher’s production was unmatched, as he hit .526 on the year, reaching base in well over half of his at bats. Along with the high batting average, the righty displayed his natural power and strength, hitting six home runs for Dodgeville throughout the course of the season. From the middle of the order, the senior drove in 27 runs for one of the better Division 3 teams in the WIAA. His presence has been felt with the Dodgers for multiple years now, as he was a key piece to their 21-5 overall record, and a Regional Championship.

FIRST BASEMAN

Austin Wienke 1B / OF / Whitefish Bay, WI / 2023
MARSHALL COMMIT
Wienke was the key run-producer for Whitefish Bay down the home stretch in the playoffs, but his production all season was impactful to the Blue Dukes’ run to a share of a conference championship and an eventual playoff run. Before the State Tournament, Wienke had driven in 39 runs as the every-day three-hitter, and continued to add on to that total at Fox Cities Stadium. Over the course of the regular season, the first baseman hit three home runs, earning his fourth in a blowout victory over No. 1 seeded Stevens Point in the Semifinals. The recently committed prospect finished with a 1.113 OPS, scoring 26 runs with a .423 batting average. His presence behind fellow teammates in MIF’s Jack Counsell (2023; Michigan) and JD Dix (2024; Alabama) was a difference-maker for Whitefish Bay in the end.

Eddie Peters SS / La Crosse Aquinas, WI / 2024
XAVIER COMMIT
Coming into the season as one of the top infielders in Wisconsin’s 2024 class, Peters showed out and earned Third-Team honors. The Xavier commit hit for a .370 AVG and a 1.209 OPS. The fourth-ranked shortstop in the class also totaled 32 RBI and 16 XBH, five of which came as a home run. A 2022 PBR Future Game alum, Peters was a key piece of the Aquinas roster that made it to the Division 3 State Championship. Manning the shortstop position, Peters made a large impact on the success of the Blugolds, who had to face Division 1 competition for a majority of their season, priming them well in the end. The right-hander also left his mark in the bullpen, racking up multiple saves throughout the 2023 season for Aquinas.

Mason Roell SS / RHP / West Bend East, WI / 2024

UNCOMMITTED
Roell’s record-setting year and performances for West Bend East landed him on our All-State Third Team. At the plate, Roell hit for a .438 AVG and a 1.258 OPS. He recorded 25 RBI, seven doubles, four triples, and one home run. Roell set records for AVG and OBP in a single season as a Sun. On the mound, Roell was trusted in the biggest moments of the West Bend East’s season and delivered. He tossed 31.2 innings and went 5-1 with two saves. Not starting any of the games, in relief, Roell struck out 30 batters and was a crucial piece of the Suns closing out games and earning a share of the North Shore Conference title. Roell remains an uncommitted prospect to follow in Wisconsin’s 2024 class.

Eddie Rynders SS / RHP / Wisconsin Lutheran, WI / 2024
KENT STATE COMMIT
Rynders continued to produce at a high level for Wisconsin Lutheran in his junior season as a two-way prospect, but did major damage at the plate for a Vikings team that made numerous appearances in the WIAA Power 25. The lefty finished the year with a .411 batting average, including six doubles, five triples, and two home runs. As his power numbers continued to increase, so did his RBI and runs scored totals. Rynders drove in 30 teammates this past spring, while he crossed home plate 21 times, emerging as a force in the middle of the Wisconsin Lutheran lineup. The to-be senior completed his year with a patient mentality in the batters box as well, walking 15 times in comparison to his three strikeouts. On the mound, Rynders racked up five wins and held a 1.80 ERA, punching out 41 batters in 31 IP.

Jack Counsell SS / 2B / Whitefish Bay, WI / 2023
MICHIGAN COMMIT
Counsell arguably had the biggest impact on Whitefish Bay’s run to a Division 1 Championship, as his offensive production and defensive work at the shortstop position was more than influential for the Blue Dukes when it was all said and done. The righty racked up eight hits in three games in Appleton, highlighted by a 4-for-5 performance in a 17-0 win over Stevens Point in the Semifinals. He finished the year by scoring 40 times as the every-day leadoff hitter for Whitefish Bay, as he accumulated 19 RBIs in the process too. Despite only having 11 extra-base hits, the middle infielder made up for that with his speed on the basepaths, as he swiped a total of 31 bases, one of the higher totals amongst the pool of All-State members. Counsell stepped up in the big moment for his team, earning him Third-Team All-State honors to complete his prep career.

MISSOURI STATE COMMIT
Dunn’s junior season at Wautoma earned him Third-Team All-State honors. The Missouri State commit had a standout season at the plate as he hit for a .476 AVG and a 1.303 OPS. Dunn tallied 10 RBI, 24 BB, 27 SB, and struck out a low three times on the year. On the mound, he tossed 45.1 innings and struck out 73 over those frames. Despite the Hornets going through some troubles, Dunn was a run-scorer at the top of the order for Wautoma, crossing home plate 33 times to go with that high batting average. The 2022 South Central Conference POTY returns for his senior season, coming off of back-to-back quality high school seasons.

Caleb Karll OF / Madison West, WI / 2023
OHIO COMMIT
Headed to Ohio University in the fall, Karll had a senior season that landed him on our All-State Third-Team. The 2021 PBR Future Games alum stood out at the plate for Madison West, as he hit for a .426 AVG and tallied 26 RBI. He recorded an OPS of 1.282 and had 11 XBH, five of which were via the long ball. He recorded these extreme numbers while pitchers threw around him, illustrating the respect the right-handed batter received throughout his senior season. A leader of the Regents’ program, Karll was selected as First-Team All-Conference in the Big Eight for the second year in a row, continuing to add onto his prep accolades as his high school career comes to a close.

Brennan Huber OF / Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, WI / 2023
UW-STEVENS POINT COMMIT
Huber entered his senior season as one of the top players to watch for in the northern portion of the Badger State, and delivered throughout the year for Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, leading them to a 20-9 record. The Red Raiders snuck into our WIAA Power 25 throughout the season, mostly with the help of Huber at the top of the lineup. Taking over the centerfield position for multiple years, the righty inserted himself as the every-day leadoff hitter for Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, hitting .528 on the year. The formula was successful throughout the majority of the 2023 campaign, as the Red Raiders started 10-0 on the season. His production will be irreplaceable for this team, as Huber concludes his prep career as one of the top performing outfielders in the state.

SOUTHEASTERN (IA) CC COMMIT
Eveland was the ace of the rotation this season for Lake Mills and had a season that landed him All-State Third Team honors. Over 46.2 innings, Eveland posted a 1.80 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. He recorded 84 strikeouts and allowed just 12 ER over the frames that he tossed. The former PBR Wisconsin Pitcher of the Week put together another dominant year, highlighted by his perfect game effort against Belleville, leading the L-Cats to a second place finish in the Capitol - North Conference. The right-hander wraps up his prep career as one of the most storied players in Lake Mills history, and earns his first All-State award in a loaded field of pitchers.

Tanner peterson
RHP / LA crosse aquinas, WI / 2024
UNCOMMITTED
Peterson is the second member of Aquinas to make the Third-Team All-State list, as he emerged as the ace of the Blugold squad that made a run to the Division 3 State Championship Game. The right-hander was 9-1 on the mound, throwing 64.2 innings, maintaining a 1.19 ERA. Peterson only allowed 29 hits and 11 earned runs on the year, earning himself a low 0.74 WHIP when it was all said and done. This was highlighted in front of our staff in Appleton, as Peterson advanced Aquinas to the championship matchup with a six-inning one-hitter against Random Lake.

Ty Rechner RHP / Stevens Point Area, WI / 2024
UNCOMMITTED
After coming off of a quality summer, Rechner stood out as one of the top arms in the northern portion of the state, as he entered the State Tournament with an unblemished 9-0 record, holding an extremely low 0.16 ERA. The right-hander struck out 58 batters over 49.1 innings of work, dominating his competition throughout. Runs were hard to come by against Rechner, as the to-be senior only let up one earned run, shutting down his foes throughout the entirety of the season. His performances led Stevens Point all the way to the Division 1 State Semifinals in a successful year for head coach Kraig Terpstra and the Panthers.

Sam Polyock RHP / Badger, WI / 2024
UNCOMMITTED
Polyock earned Third-Team All-State honors by putting together a historic season at Badger, despite holding a 4-4 at the end of the year. The uncommitted 2024 prospect struck out 69 batters over the course of 58 innings, only allowing six earned runs in the spring while throwing against some of the top offensive groups in the WIAA, keeping his team competitive throughout the year. That was good for a 0.72 ERA, the lowest in the Badgers’ school history, as the right-hander never gave up more than one earned run in each of his 11 outings. The workhorse inserted himself as an athlete to follow throughout the summer circuit, standing out as the ace of Badger.

Dessart was a crucial part of Union Grove’s success this spring, and his near flawless performances on the bump earned him a spot on our Third-Team All-State. One of the top individual pitching performances this spring, highlighted by his one-hitter against Waterford to send the Broncos to the Sectional Final matchup. Across the year, the junior maintained dominance on the mound, posting a 10-0 record, tossing three complete games, and allowing just nine earned runs. In the 53 innings he threw, Dessart recorded 63 K’s and ended with a 1.19 ERA. Similar to the aforementioned Polyock, Dessart also threw in one of the deepest conferences this season, minimizing any threat that came his way from opposing offenses.

Jirschele was the ultimate team-player for Mosinee, producing at a high rate both at the plate and on the mound. Towards the top of the Indians’ order, the former 2022 PBR Future Games participant accumulated 18 extra base hits, scoring 39 times, good for a .381 batting average. Jirschele etched his name into the record books at Mosinee as well, hitting the most career triples in program history in just two years of varsity baseball. His speed was a threat on basepaths too, as the to-be senior stole 26 bases en route to a 22-3 overall record and Regional Championship. Jirschele’s arm played a key role as well, as the right-hander used a slight velo increase to go 9-0 on the season, posting a 0.89 ERA and 0.80 WHIP, dominating his competition in the Great Northern Conference. He struck out 73 batters in 55 innings pitched, twirling two no-hitters and four complete games. Jirschele’s notable performances throughout the spring, and now in the summer shapes himself up to be one of the top two-way prospects returning in the spring in 2024.

IOWA CENTRAL CC
Busson’s presence cannot be understated in the 2023 season, as he led Hudson to a conference championship, sectional appearance, and won POTY in the Big Rivers. The right-hander got the job done on both ends of the field, standing out as an arm for most of the year. Busson threw 40 innings on the mound, going 6-1 overall with a low 0.88 ERA, facing tough competition daily. The senior struck out 63 batters and only let up five earned runs, as he threw one no-hitter on the year, illustrating his dominance. Offensively, Busson was a staple in the middle of Hudson’s order and consistently produced, similar to his performances on the bump. Busson hit .386 with 11 extra base hits, driving in 28 runs while scoring 22 times. He finished with an 1.054 OPS, describing his importance to the Raiders team throughout the entirety of the season, as he left a mark on the program for years to come.

Ovsak did it all for Denmark this year, something he has done for a handful of seasons now, en route to their third State Championship in a row. At the plate, Ovsak batted to an average of .402, which included six doubles, one triple, and three home runs. He would finish the season with 33 RBIs and 49 runs scored too. On the mound, he logged an 8-1 record and held opponents to just 11 earned runs all year, good for a 1.37 ERA. Ovsak’s gutsiest performance came when the Vikings needed it most, at the Division 2 State Championship game, where he was dominant in his 8.2 innings of work, allowing just one earned run in the 11-inning thriller. After his illustrious senior season, Ovsak earned First-Team All-Conference honors, and the accolades keep coming in as he finds himself on our Third Team All-State board, too.
