Pitchers Headline Week 3 of Fall Prospect Program this Sunday at Western Kentucky

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

The Fall Prospect Program heads to Western Kentucky University on Sunday, and several talented pitchers will take the mound during the course of the double-header.  Here is a look at some of the arms that will be on display (by graduating class).

Aaron Ochsenbein, RHP, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2014
At 6-foot-4, 215-pounds, Ochsenbein has the frame to go along with a fastball that we have seen up to 87 mph.   When you factor in his sharp 71-75 mph breaking ball, one that we feel is one of the best in Kentucky’s 2014 class, Ochsenbein is one of the top 2014 arms left on the board.  He lost a good part of his summer to a pulled oblique muscle, but is now back to 100 percent.

Griffin Neuer, RHP, Lexington Catholic HS, 2014
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Neuer showed an 83-84 mph fastball that touched 85 at our Unsigned Senior Games last month.  What is interesting about Neuer is the movement on his pitches.  The fastball has significant arm-side run, and he adds to that by showing the ability to throw pitches from different arm slots, including his curveball that he will occasionally drop down on.

Edward Mathis, LHP, South Oldham HS, 2014
Mathis is a 6-foot, 165-pounf lefty with very good pitchability.  With a fastball that sits 81-82 mph, he doesn’t light up the radar gun, but Mathis effectively gets hitters out.  He throws a 2-saem fastball with good arm-side run, and also throws an effective cutter that he likes to run in on right-handed hitters hands.  He has complete command of his 68-73 mph curveball.

Kyle Fisher, RHP, Western Hills HS, 2014
During the first two weeks of the Fall Program, we have yet to see the velocity from the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Fisher that we saw in June when he sat 84-86.  Thus far this fall, his fastball has been 81-82 mph, and he has very good command of his 71-72 mph curveball and 72-73 mph splitter that has good sinking action.

Caleb Bruner, RHP, Logan County HS, 2015
The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Bruner pitched for Team Kentucky at the Midwest Future Games with a fastball that sat 82-85 mph with good arm-side run from his ¾ arm slot.  He also will drop his arm slot down from time to time to show the hitter something different.  He has good command of his breaking ball that varies between 69-74 mph.

Logan Mallory, RHP, North Laurel HS, 2015
At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, Mallory has a good pitcher’s frame and showed an 83-85 mph fastball at the Midwest Future Games in early August.  He mixes in a late-breaking  71-73 mph breaking ball to keep hitters off balance.  Mallory threw two scoreless innings against Team Wisconsin at the Midwest Future Games.

Cameron Planck, RHP, Rowan County HS, 2016
Simply put, Planck is one of the top few arms in the 2016 class.  The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander has been impressive over the first two weeks of the Fall Prospect Program with a fastball up to 85 mph and a 72-74 mph, sharp breaking ball that generates some swings and misses.
