Preseason All-State (2019's): Catching Analysis

The annual Preseason All-State (2019's) took place Sunday, February 18 at Lawrence North HS in Indianapolis.  A total of 80 players from Indiana's Junior class participated in the event. 

Below we analyze the catchers in attendance.

Mason McLeod C / OF / Greensburg, IN / 2019

 6-foot-3, 185 pound left-handed hitting catcher continues to fill in his frame and impress in the batters box.  Open setup, athletic load.  Loose hands, quick barrel.  Pullside approach with hard contact throughout.  Average balance.  High exit velocity of 88.  Defensively, he has quick footwork and transfer.  Short arm action, high 3/4 slot.  Clean into release.  Throws had carry, topping 82.  Pop times ranged between 1.88-2.00.  Notre Dame commit. 

 

Kiel Brenczewski C / 3B / Fishers, IN / 2019

6-foot-2, 195 pound catcher flashed pop times between 1.88-1.95 behind the plate. Quick transfer and footwork.  Long arm action.  Throws topped 83 with carry.  In the box, strong frame with a balanced swing.  Fast barrel turn.  Uphill path to contact.  Present power.  Pull side approach.  Navy commit. 

 

Cade Fitzpatrick C / RHP / Franklin Central, IN / 2019

6-foot-1, 210 pound catcher showcased pop times between 1.95-2.02.  Quick transfer and footwork. Long arm action.  Throws had carry at 79mph.  Physical frame, strong presence in the batters box.  High exit velocity of 93.  Quick barrel turn.  Big load, some balance.  Potential plus power.  Pull side approach with intent to lift.  Ball state commit. 

Mason Diaz C / OF / Wheeler, IN / 2019

5-foot-11, 200 pound catcher has present bat speed and physicality in the box.  Strong hands, line drive approach.  Gap to gap power.  Partial use of lower half.  High exit velocity of 84.  Soft hands behind the plate, receives well.  Heavy footwork, quick transfer.  Short arm action into high 3/4 slot.  Throws topped 73mph with pop times ranging between 1.98-2.01. 

 

Zach Collins C / Westfield, IN / 2019

5-foot-11, 185 pound catcher hits from a slight crouch, balanced setup.  Hands load back with short stride.  Quick barrel.  Gap to gap power.  High contact hitter.  Fluid rhythm.  High exit velocity of 90mph.  Behind the plate, arm action is short, quick.  Clean transfer, quick feet.  Throws topped 75 with pop times ranging between 1.94-2.01. 

 

Bryce Ginder C / 2B / FW Carroll, IN / 2019

 5-foot-10, 165 pound catcher is a high contact hitter with ability to use all fields.  Slightly open setup, fluid load.  Compact, level path through contact.  Good balance throughout.  High exit velocity of 78mph.  Defensively, he has very quick feet and transfer behind the plate.  Short arm action, high 3/4 slot.  Throws were accurate at 79mph with some carry.  Pop times ranged between 1.93-2.01. 

 

Aidan Minzenberger C / 3B / Floyd Central, IN / 2019

6-foot-3, 195 pound catcher showcased a fast barrel with gap to gap power.  Twitchy hands, some rhythm in the swing.  Athletic setup with leg kick in load.  Good balance.  High exit velocity of 88mph.  Defensively, pop times ranged between 1.92-2.01.  Strong arm, inconsistent accuracy.  Short, overtop slot with some carry.  Average hands, fluid transfer.  Physical, stiff frame behind the plate. 

 

Peyton Williams C / OF / McCutcheon, IN / 2019

 5-foot-10, 175 pound catcher displayed pop times ranging between 1.98-2.05.  Short arm action, high 3/4 slot.  Peak velocity of 76 from the crouch.  Flat and quick footwork.  Clean transfer.  Hits from an open setup.  Line drive approach.  Long, level path.  Stays on plane.  Contact hitter.  Able to use all fields.  High exit velocity of 83mph. 

Max Kercheval C / OF / North Central, IN / 2019

5-foot-10, 175 pound catcher hits from an open setup, smooth load.  Barrel stays on plane, high contact hitter.  Average use of lower half.  Good balance.  Spray to all fields.  High exit velocity of 76.  Defensively, pop times ranged between 2.02-2.09.  Flat, fluid footwork.  Quick transfer into short arm swing.  Throws topped at 70mph 

 

Logan Maynard C / 1B / FJ Reitz, IN / 2019

6-foot-2, 250 pound catcher has strong hands and quick bat speed.  High exit velocity of 91.  Gap to gap power with room for more.  Long, uphill path to contact.  Starts open, closes off with short stride.  Above average balance.  Defensively, pop times ranged between 2.10-2.18.  Long footwork and exchange, short arm action.  Throws peaked at 72mph from the crouch. 

 

Liam Patton C / 1B / Warsaw, IN / 2019

 6-foot-3, 200 pound catcher has above average bat speed with good balance.  Average use of lower half.  Some rhythm in load.  Potential power. High exit velocity of 83mph. Defensively, pop times ranged between 2.09-2.19.  Throws topped 71mph.  Short arm swing produced accurate throws.  Fluid footwork.  Stiff actions.  Ran a 7.6 60 yard dash.
