Preseason All-State Games: Pitcher Analysis

With the current cancellation of spring baseball season, we want to take the time to highlight some players from our past events. Here's a look at the Pitchers that took the hill from the Preseason All-State Games that took place on January 26th at Arizona State University. There were some excellent pitchers in attendance, highlighted by MLB draft hopeful & Arizona State commit, Ronan Kopp of Scottsdale Christian. There was talent on the mound across all of the different graduate classes in attendance thatscouts should keep an eye on going into the summer season. Here are reports from the afternoon, listed in alphabetical order.

Jason Barres RHP / OF / Perry, AZ / 2020Rankings StateRank: 56 / POS: 14
5-foot-10 170-pound RHP, Chandler-Gilbert commit, large athletic body, some defined strength. Showed raw athleticism in unorthodox delivery with natural arm strength. Pitched with short deceptive L3/4 arm action with a fast arm. FB sat 85-88mph with some heavy arm side run, topping out at 89mph. Mixed in a slurvy breaking ball from the same deceptive arm slot at 71-72mph. Going to be an interesting arm to follow. Ball jumps out of the hand with movement. With a few tweaks, could throw even harder with continued life and deception. |

Henry Chabot C / 3B / Brophy, AZ / 2022Large 5-foot-11 185-pound build, strong body with big legs. Starts from a strong medium base, shifting weight to back leg with small toe tap. Gets stuck on the backside at times. Natural strength throughout swing. Opened up front shoulder, turning barrel early. Pull side heavy approach with hard GB contact. Quick direct exchanges behind the plate. Popped up during pitch. Side shuffles to 2nd base with average direction, missing to SS side of the bag. Pop times of 1.9-2.1. Some natural arm strength at 76mph. On the mound, he showed short arm action from H ¾ slot with some quickness. Threw a flat FB at 80-82mph. Mixed in a sharp SL at 72-73 with inconsistent control. |

Brandon Compton OF / LHP / Buckeye Union , AZ / 20225-foot-9 165-pounds, two-way player, balanced frame with projectability. Strength & maturity starting to come. Overall clean actions & high baseball IQ. Left-handed hitter with advanced approach. Starts from an athletic base with some weight on left leg, knees inside toes. Uses a small pick-up with minimal forward movement to generate leverage. Loads hands slightly back with some stoppage. Short level swing with middle approach. Hard contact at 87mph exit velocity. Showed ability to use LCF gap well. Capable corner OF, ran a 7.64 60-yard dash. More athletic than time shows. Used a side shuffle on throws to home with 82mph arm strength. Repeatable delivery on the mound, throwing strikes at 78-81mph combined with above average control on his average 12/6 CV. Going to be a player to monitor as he physically develops. Well rounded player. |

Marcus Delgado RHP / OF / Canyon Del Oro, AZ / 20226-foot-2 173-pounds, thin high waisted with long limbs, room to hold more strength. Easy low effort delivery. Pushes off the rubber with early rotation. Slightly forward tilt of the trunk at front foot strike. Throws with short arm action with some drag from H ¾ arm slot. FB showed some slight heaviness and sinking action at 83-85mph. Slurvy breaking ball with varying shape thrown with a stiff wrist at 68-70mph, showing some glimpses of being a quality pitch. Struck out a batter in his game on his breaking ball. Some natural arm strength, could make a jump into the summer. Threw 90mph from the OF last summer. Development should be followed on the mound. |

Charles Heil RHP / 1B / Seton Catholic Prep, AZ / 20236-foot-3 190-pounds, tall with long torso & arms, broad shoulders, some strength & durability to frame to build off, average athleticism currently. Raw delivery with tall coiled leg lift, rushed at times. Some upward tilt as he comes down the mound. Lands with front foot and shoulders open, rotating upper body early. Falls off to 1B side at times. Throws from H ¾ arm slot. Some natural arm strength. FB sat 77-79mph with some arm side run. Mixed in a SL with gradual break at 71-73mph & straight CH at 72-74mph. Body and natural arm strength make interesting. Follow with continued development. |

Cayne Killion LHP / LHP / Red Mountain , AZ / 20235-foot-11 185-pounds, broad shoulders, strong lower half, hips work. Clean easy actions on the mound. Showed some body control. Lands across body, cross firing. Upright trunk at foot strike, keeping front leg bent through release. Hides ball behind body with deceptively lower arm slot. Short downward arm swing. FB sat 74-76, topping at 77mph with arm side run. Threw a SL with gradual sweeping shape near FB arm speed at 63-65mph. CH looked very closely like his FB at 70-71 mph with slightly slower arm speed. Clean actions and projectability should make him a pitcher that should be monitored closely. |

Patrick Kappler RHP / OF / Cactus Shadows, AZ / 20226-foot 195-pounds, two-way player, XL frame with some strength & durability, slow-twitch. Ran an 8.14 60-yard dash with short strides. Hit from a wide base using a rushed toe tap trigger, landing close to where he started. Starts hand in center of body, head height, loading to back shoulder. Vertical barrel entry. Cuts underneath baseball. Short to the baseball with average bat speed. 78mph exit velocity. Creates angles & some direction with accurate throws. 76mph arm strength. On the mound, worked 71-73, topping out at 74mph with FB from a ¾ arm slot. Mixed in a 62-63 mph CV with little shape. |

Trenton Harrington SS / 3B / Chaparral, AZ / 20226-foot-1 160-pounds, lean athletic frame with above average projectability, ton of room to add strength on quick twitch frame. Fields with energy and hop in his step, running a 7.09 60-yard dash. Stays low throughout his raw footwork in the infield, showing some quickness. Sure hands. Left-handed hitter that hits from a tall upright base with narrow stance. Uses leg-kick trigger to create leverage. Stiff elbows in load, turning barrel early creating a pull approach. Shows the ability to lift the baseball. Squared up baseball consistently to RF at 91mph exit velocity. Also threw an inning on the mound in the games portion. Throwing from a ¾ slot with short arm action. FB sat 81-84mph with some heaviness. Breaking ball is still developing with little shape at this time at 72-73mph. Progress should be followed, should get significantly better in all areas with added strength. |

Jake Kingsbury OF / LHP / Brophy College Prep, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 90 / POS: 14
6-foot-1 195-pounds, physical body, broad shoulders, big legs, strength to work with. Hits from a squared base with some weight on the front leg, shifting weight to the middle of the body. Uses a small leg lift with minimal forward movement. Throws hands at the ball with strong upper body dominant swing. Ball jumps off bat with limited carry at 89mph. Good pre-pitch movement & feel for position in OF. Takes good angles & creates carry with accuracy on 81mph throws. One the mound, throws with short arm action from ¾ slot. FB sat 78-81 with higher spin. Takes direction away from plate with uncontrolled finish. Off-speed still developing but located down in the zone. |

Kole Klecker RHP / 3B / Hamilton, AZ / 20226-foot-1 175-pounds, lean high-waisted body with long limbs. Some projectability to his frame. Body can hold more strength & weight. One of the last pitchers on the night but didn't disappoint. Low effort delivery. Forward trunk tilt at release. Easy arm action from H¾ slot. FB sat 80-82mph consistently. Developing feel for off-speed. CV had varying shape but showed glimpses of sharp 12/6 action at 69-71mph. Mixed in a firm SL. CH showed little fade at 72-73mph. Development should be monitored. Chance to make jumps with added explosiveness. |

Christian Koklys 2B / RHP / Cactus Shadows, AZ / 20236-foot-1 178-pounds, average build & athleticism with some strength in the lower half. Starts in medium squared base, using toe-tap trigger. Transferred little energy off backside early. Used the whole field with average contact at 78mph exit velocity. Enters hitting zone vertically, getting out quickly. Raw actions in the infield with minimal direction and follow through. 72mph arm strength across the diamond. On the mounds, throws from a H3/4 arm slot. Repeats delivery with bent front leg. Straight FB sat 69-71mph. SL showed gradual 11/5 shape at 60-61mph. |

Ronan Kopp LHP / 1B / Scottsdale Christian, AZ / 20206-foot-4 210-pounds, Arizona State commit, physical presence with broad shoulders, long limbs, strength to frame. Threw one inning of work against live hitters, striking out 2 batters while allowing one walk. Delivery had some moving parts, staying relatively linear down the mound. Throwing with longer arm action from a near ¾ arm slot. Heavy FB sat 93-96mph, effectively erratic. Threw two different breaking balls- one being a firm sweeping SL and the other a gradual BB with 2/8 shape. The firm sweeping SL showed glimpses of being an above average pitch. Threw one CH in the outing at 84mph with some run to the arm side. Kopp’s frame combined with elite arm strength and upside will be closely monitored by MLB clubs in the near future. |

Trace Laudenschlager LHP / OF / Cactus Shadows, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 103 / POS: 15
5-foot-7 150-pounds, medium frame, lean body, clean easy actions. Threw 2 innings on day, starting out nicely. Throws from a H¾ arm slot with short arm action. Trunk angles off towards 3B side through end of delivery. FB had late-life while coming in at 78-80 mph. Threw strikes early before missing up in zone. Threw a curveball with depth & downer break at 74-75 mph. Flashed an above-average change-up thrown with fastball arm speed as his best off-speed pitch with fading action at 74-75 mph. Overall clean actions should be followed with more physical development. |

6-foot-1 175-pound, Cerro Coso CC commit, proportional strength & athleticism, some definition, slightly stiff hips. Stood out on the mound with his calm approach. Jumps into front foot strike at times. Showed some shoulder/ hip separation. Slight upward tilt of the shoulders. Worked 84-87mph with FB with short OT arm action, displaying some arm speed. Mixed in a loose 75mph 11/5 CV and 80mph CH. Pounded the strike zone. |

Hayden Lewis RHP / OF / Chaparral , AZ / 2022Rankings OverallRank: 396 / POS: 96
6-foot 150-pound, two-way player. Thin body with some twitchy movements, strong forearms. Ton of room to fill out physically. Hips worked well. Starts from a medium base in an upright position with a slightly open stance. Uses a leg lift to gather energy in the back leg. Minimal forward movement. On time with some rhythm. Pull approach with some hard contact at 86mph. Tracks the ball in the OF. Showed aggressiveness, playing through the baseball. Uses step behind crow-hop with carry on throws at 86mph. Had a decent day positionally but really stood out with his noticeably fast arm on the mound. Throws from a ¾ slot with a quick delivery. Sat 84-86mph on firm FB with fade. Mixed in a hard tight slider 73-77mph. CH was thrown at 71-72mph. Hitters couldn’t catch up with how fast he worked. |

Marshall Mastrantuono SS / RHP / Sunnyslope, AZ / 20226-foot-1 175-pound frame, long limbs, high waisted, some strength in lower half. Starts from an average squared base, using a forward leg lift to create momentum. Lands out in front at times with bent front leg. Loads hands straight back with a vertical barrel. Looks to lift the baseball with a long raw approach, using the whole field. Average contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Did hit a hard line drive to LCF in game for a double. Ran a 7.22 60-yard dash, covering some ground in the infield with long strides. Minimal momentum and direction on throws with 78mph arm strength. Determined effort. Also pitched on the day. Throws with long arm action from a H ¾ slot. FB worked 76-78mph, Falls off to 1B side. Mixed a gradual 11/5 CV at 67-68mph. |

Brady Nelson RHP / 1B / Ironwood Ridge, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 78 / POS: 15
6-foot-2 170-pounds, lean body, long limbs with some athleticism. Currently a two-way player. Raw rotational swinger with extra movement. Tall narrow upright stance, slightly open. Reached forward into front foot strike. Loads back elbow up, locking arms. Pull approach with inconsistent top-spin contact, 83mph exit velocity. Lets the ball get to him defensively with low effort. Natural arm strength with whippy arm across the diamond, 84mph arm strength across the diamond. Future is on the mound. Throw from ¾ arm slot, short arm swing. Disconnected from ground early. FB sat 80-83mph with late cutting action, erratic at times. Mixed in a 12/6 breaking ball up in the zone with early action, near FB arm speed. Development should be followed on the mound. |

Landon Penney LHP / 1B / Brophy College Prep, AZ / 20236-foot 190-pound frame, physical body with broad shoulders, good strength for age. Two-way player currently. Left-handed hitter with above average pop for age. Hits from a slightly spread out base. Barrel starts flat, loading a little more vertical pointing towards backstop. Uses hard forward move to create violent swing. Pull approach, turning barrel early. Hard contact at 85mph. Also pitched on the day. Early forward movement in raw delivery, collapsing on the front side. Throws with short arm action, pushing the ball to home plate. FB sat 71-75mph with some heaviness. CV showed gradual downer shape at 68-69mph. Future looks to be at the plate at this time. Physical left handed hitter should be monitored. |

Christian Perez 3B / 1B / Sunnyslope, AZ / 20226-foot-1 215-pounds, big body with some strength & durability, more athleticism than one would think for size. Two-way player currently. Left-handed hitter with average slightly open base. Uses gathered leg kick to create energy, loading his hands deep. Locks elbows at times. Some strength through his swing. Hits the ball to the opposite field well. Inconsistent on the outer half of the plate. Mid/oppo approach, hard contact at 91mph. Looked better at the plate in game. Easy footwork in the infield, showing some athleticism. Sure hands, playing through the baseball. 75mph arm strength across the diamond. Also pitched at the event. Tall delivery, recoiling on finish in live ABs. Throws from a H ¾ arm slot with short arm action. FB sat 75-76mph. CV showed some glimpses of having some sharp break at 61-62mph. Follow as a left-handed hitter. |

Kaden Schiefelbein RHP / 3B / Liberty, AZ / 2021Rankings StateRank: 8 / POS: 2
6-foot-2 170-pounds, lean, athletic frame with long limbs and projection. Ran a 6.89 60-yard dash. Two-way player. Hits from an average balance base, using small forward move. Level swing with line-drive contact, 86mph exit velocity. Gap to gap approach. Athleticism plays in the infield with low effort actions and strong arm across the diamond at 84mph. More than capable HS third basemen & hitter. Showed solid tools as a position player, but his future lies on the mound. He pitches with a controlled, repeatable delivery and quick arm from a higher slot. He gets downhill with a high-spin fastball that sat 83-87 and touched 90 with riding life through the zone. He mixes in a short curveball in the upper 70s that shows more downer break and has shown glimpses of being a swing-and-miss pitch in the past. Current tools & athleticism should make him a high follow as a pitching prospect. |

Used small & quick leg lift, opening up front foot as it hits the ground. Some extra pre-pitch movement. Long raw swinger, slightly uphill swing path looking to drive baseball. Mid/pull approach, 83mph exit velocity. Choppy footwork in the OF. Ran a 7.57 60-yard dash. Created direction toward his target. Accurate throws at 86mph. Has a power approach to pitching. Back foot stays connected to the ground. Front leg stays bent through the finish. Throws from a higher arm slot with some uphill tilt through delivery. Pounded the zone with FB, sitting at 79-83mph. CH had fade at 70-71mph. BB was average on the day but located well. |

Andre Valdez LHP / OF / St. Mary's, AZ / 20226-foot 160-pounds, thin wiry build, showed some slight twitch at times, athletic with some projectability. Low intensity to delivery. Forced hand glove separation. Minimal drive off back side and sink into legs. Throws from a ¾ arm slot. FB sat 71-75mph with some cutting action. Changes arm angles on off-speed pitches. Threw a CV with varying shape at 68-69mph. Was able to get some swings and misses on his curveball that came. There is more in the tank with tweak in mechanics and intensity. Development should be monitored. |

6-foot-3 180-pounds, body stand outs for age, young lean body with long legs and arms, more maturing left. Two-way player. Left-handed hitter with some rawness to approach. Hits from a wide athletic base with knee bend, turning knee inward as he goes slightly forward into foot strike. Works from underneath, trying to drive the baseball in the air. Average contact in BP on the day. Natural pop at 93mph arm strength. Confident actions and good target in the infield. Athleticism around the bag. Also pitched at the event. Tall athletic delivery with some repeatability, pushing off early. Throwing with over-top arm action with short arm swing. FB worked 79-80mph with some slight cutting action. Mixed in a gradual CV with downer shape at 64-69mph. High ceiling two way prospect to follow. |

Owen Wade SS / RHP / Pinnacle, AZ / 20236-foot 160-pounds, lean athletic build, balance frame with some strength in legs. Two-way player. Hits from a narrow open stance, resting bat on shoulder. Reaches forward into foot strike, landing square. Loads hands back tilting barrel vertical. Oppo approach with Inside out swing. Power to RCF gap. Late timing. Average footwork & quickness in the infield. Ran a 7.68 60-yard dash. Fields in low position, funneling baseball in between legs. Minimal momentum & direction to bag with 75mph arm strength. Also pitched at the event. Repeatable delivery, pitching predominantly from the stretch. Throws with short ¾ arm action. FB sat 78-79mph, slight arm side run at times. Mixed in an 11/5 cv with gradual shape at 65-67mph. |

6-foot-4 175-pounds, Thin body, high waisted with long limbs, projectability. Good athleticism to build off and room to hold more weight and strength. Easy athletic delivery. Throws with long arm action from a H ¾ arm slot. Little extension towards the plate, pronating early. Lands on toe with upright chest angling towards 1B side. FB sat 80-82mph. Mixes in a CV showing 11/5 shape with late break at 67-68mph, getting around the baseball at times. Didn’t throw the change-up much on the day but was clocked at 74-76mph in warm-ups. Pitchers body who continues to bounce from injury last year. Progress on the mound should be followed. Has the athleticism to make a jump. |

Jimmy Williams OF / RHP / Cactus Shadows, AZ / 20226-foot-3 175-pound, two-way player. Looks more physical & body stands out. Sneaky athleticism, running a 7.14 60-yard dash. Hits from a semi wide base. Uses a small toe tap to gather some weight in the back leg. Aggressive approach with pull contact. Hit a ball deep to LCF in game, reaching out for solid contact, 92mph exit velocity. Takes his time fielding and getting rid of the ball in the OF. 82mph arm strength with minimal momentum. Also had a solid day on the mound, working 80-83mph with his FB. Stays tall through his delivery. Throws from a ¾ slot with some arm speed. Gets some extension. Off-speed still developing, CV shows some shape. Should improve across the board as he learns to use and control his body. Solid follow into spring & summer. |
