Preseason All-State Underclass: Outfield Analysis

The Preseason All-State-Underclass showcase took place on Saturday, February 25th at Lawrence North HS in Indianapolis, IN.  The invite-only event featured 67 players in the 2019-2021 classes.  

We began the rollout of the event a couple of weeks ago taking a look at the Stat Story .

Today we continue the analysis with the outfielders in attendance. 

Top 5

1. Ryan Lynch, LHP/OF, Penn HS, 2020

6-foot-1, 185 pounds. Two-way prospect and No. 1 ranked player in the 2020 class.  Offensively, hits from the right-side of the plate from an open, athletic/crouch setup.  Short stride, small leg lift timing trigger, partial rotation with the lower half.  Showcased quick hand speed with a slightly uphill swing path.  Consistent hard contact during his BP. Registered a high exit velocity of 90 mph.  Defensively, long, loose high ¾ arm action.  Throws topped at 87 mph with life, carry.  Footwork is quick and fluid, plays through the baseball.  Athletic actions defensively.  Ran a 6.77 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

2. Grant Trinkle, OF, Columbus North HS, 2020

5-foot-8, 155 pounds.  Offensively, the RHH hits from an open, athletic/crouch setup.  Smooth load, short stride. Over rotation with the lower half.  Showcased plus bat speed for his age.  Has a swagger approach in the box.  Slightly uphill swing path produced hard hit line drives.  Fluid rhythm throughout the swing.  One of the best rounds of BP at the event.  Registered a high exit velocity of 82 mph.  Defensively, short arm circle back, ¾ slot.  Throws topped out at 85 with some carry.  Plays through the baseball with quick, fluid footwork.  Solid defender.  Ran a 6.98 in the laser-timed 60.  

3. Brandon Dodson, RHP/OF, 2020

6-foot, 185 pounds. Two-way prospect and No. 2 ranked player in the 2020 class.  Offensively, the RHH hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load back, short stride, partial rotation with the lower half.  Showcased above average bat speed from a short/quick path.  Aggressive swings during his BP round.  Gap-to-Gap type power with fluid rhythm in the swing.  Registered a high exit velocity of 84 mph.  Defensively, long high ¾ arm action, throws topped out at 86 with life.  Plays through the baseball, fluid footwork, at times packs during the exchange.  Ran a 7.49 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

4. Seth Wilson, SS/OF, Monroe Central HS, 2019

5-foot-10, 170 pounds. Offensively, hits from a crouch type setup, loads back, leg kick timing trigger, partial rotation with the lower half.  Maintains balance through the swing.  Above average bat speed, uphill swing path, gets to extension.  Produced hard hit line drives during his BP.  Rhythm is early.  Registered a high exit velocity of 85 mph.  Defensively, long high ¾ arm action, throws topped out at 85 from the OF with some carry.  Plays through the baseball with quick, fluid footwork.  Sure hands, clean exchange.  Ran a 6.89 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

5. Kyle Pepiot, OF/RHP, Westfield HS, 2019

5-foot-11, 182 pounds.  Offensively, hits from a tall, athletic setup.  Smooth load, short stride, average use of the lower half.  Maintains balance throughout the swing.  Overall good approach at the plate, quiet and simple.  Produced quick bat speed from a level swing plane. Gap to gap type power, fluid rhythm.  Registered a high exit velocity of 91 mph.  Defensively, short high ¾ arm action.  Throws topped out at 83 from the OF.  Shows average glove work with fluid feet, long/clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball.  Ran a 7.23 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash.

Mitchell Ayers, RHP/OF, Chatard HS, 2019

6-foot-4, 185 pounds with long limbs. Offensively, the RHH hits from a wide/crouch setup.  Starts with low hands, smooth load back, long stride.  Spins the lower half. Showcased average bat speed, level swing path, line drive type hitter.  Rhythm is stiff.  Registered a high exit velocity of 82 mph.  Defensively, stiff high ¾ arm action, throws topped out at 75 mph.  Hard hands with a slow exchange.  Ran a 7.39 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

Jake Dykstra, OF, Lake Central HS, 2019

5-foot-8, 155 pounds.  Offensively, hits from a wide-crouch setup.  Toe tap for timing, partial rotation in the lower half.  Maintains balance throughout his swing.  Uphill swing path, choppy rhythm.  Registered a high exit velocity of 71 mph.  Defensively, showcased average glove work with fluid feet and a clean exchange.  High ¾ arm action with some accuracy, throws topped out at 69 mph.  Ran a 7.27 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

Adam Euler, OF, FJ Reitz HS, 2020

6-foot, 185 pounds. Offensively, the LHH hits from a small crouch setup, smooth load, small leg kick timing trigger.  Over rotation with the lower half.  Overall good approach in the box.  Quick hand speed, short, level swing plane.  Line drive hitter.  Rhythm is stiff.  Registered a high exit velocity of 80 mph.  Defensively, long/loose high ¾ arm action.  Throws topped out at 80 mph.  Plays through, fluid footwork, average hands.  Ran a 7.34 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

Jack Firestone, OF, Zionsville HS, 2019

6-foot-2, 172 pounds.  Offensively, the LHH hits from an open setup, loads back, short stride, partial rotation with the half.  Maintains balance throughout the swing. Short, uphill swing path, line drive hitter.  Showed some pop during his BP.  Registered a high exit velocity of 82 mph. Defensively, stiff arm action from a high ¾ slot.  Throws topped out at 80 mph.  Fluid footwork, small crow hop, plays through.  Fields the ball off to the side and deep.  Ran a 7.25 60 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

Brady Gumpf, C/OF, South Bend Saint Joseph HS, 2020

6-foot, 167 pounds.  Offensively, hits from a crouch setup that is slightly open.  Loads back, short stride, partial rotation with the lower half.  Showcased quick hands, barreled up the baseball during BP.  Long, uphill swing plane, gap type power.  Registered a high exit velocity of 87 mph.  Lower half needs refined.  Defensively from the OF, long-high ¾ arm action, throws topped out at 82 mph.  Showcased average hands, clean exchange.  Footwork is heavy/flat feet.  Ran a 7.39 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

A.J. Restivo, RHP/OF, Leo HS, 2019

6-foot, 210 pounds. Offensively, athletic setup, loads back, small leg kick timing trigger.  Average lower half, spins the back foot. Average balance throughout the swing.  Above average bat speed, slightly uphill swing path. Overall fair approach at the plate with fluid rhythm.  Showed pop to his pull side.  Registered a high exit velocity of 83 mph.  Defensively, shorter, high ¾ arm action, throws topped out at 78 mph.  Average glove work, clean exchange, plays through, fields the ball deep. Ran a 7.45 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash.  

Gaven Vogt, RHP/OF, Carroll HS, 2019

6-foot-1, 193 pounds. Offensively, balanced setup, back load with a drop in hands, short stride from a toe tap. Uphill swing plane. Rhythm is stiff. Bat drags through the zone. Registered a high exit velocity of  80 mph. Defensively, quick/choppy footwork, plays through the baseball with average hands.  Short arm circle back, high ¾ to over the top slot. Throws topped out at 78 from the OF.  Ran a 7.25 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash. 

Cooper Williams, OF/RHP, Mt. Vernon HS, 2019

6-foot-1, 180 pounds.  Offensively, hits from a balanced setup, loads back, leg kick timing trigger.  Average use of the lower half with some over rotation.  Possesses average bat speed, long/uphill swing path.  Showed hard contact to his pull-side.  Rhythm is fluid.  Defensively, long/loose high ¾ arm action with some carry.  Throws topped out at 87 mph from the OF.  Actions in the field are fluid with average hands and a clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball.  Ran a 7.38 in the laser-timed 60 yard dash.
