Opening Day is around the corner, try outs have been held, and rosters are soon to be set. The Arizona Interscholastic Association has announced that opening day of the 2022 season will commence on Wednesday, February 23rd. The PBR Arizona staff begins its 2022 season coverage starting with our preseason team previews, where we will take notes from coaches, and highlight returning players, newcomers, and some sleepers. Over the next couple weeks and leading up to opening day, we will be highlighting some of the top programs in state in our team previews. PBR will also be publishing its state Power 25 rankings that will be updated every Monday once the season begins. Throughout the season, PBR will be pumping out coverage, highlighting individual players, games, rankings, scouting reports and nominating a player of the week. PBR looks forward to getting out there this spring to see some great baseball.

Today, we look into:

Team: Canyon View High School (5A, Desert West)
2021 Record: 17-9
Head Coach: Nick Swanson
Returning Starters: Full Roster
Returning Pitchers: Full Pitching Staff

OUTLOOK

As we gather info from coaching staffs, and come to a conclusion with our Preseason Power 25 Rankings, we expect Coach Nick Swanson's team to be in a very good spot this year. Canyon View High School is in a rare situation where they are returning ALL players. Canyon View being a new school, they have not yet had a graduating class, the 2022 class being the first set of graduates from the school. That being said, this team has many strengths, the biggest strength possibly being experience. This group has played together for quite some time now, and with talent and chemistry, this could be the year this team makes a post season run. As for their strengths on the diamond, the biggest standout is how they have looked on the mound through the summer/fall circuits. Canyon View is returning 2021 All-State selection and Long Beach commit 2023 RHP Connor Mattison. Mattison is a true ace for this staff, with 3 plus pitches, command, and a bulldog mentality on the mound, going 8-0 with a 1.27 ERA in the 2021 season. They'll also get big innings from 2022 LHP Jacob Heppner (Minot State), 2023 RHP Diego Garcia, 2023 RHP/OF Matthew Hart, 2022 LHP Caiden Padget (Colorado State), 2023 RHP Austin Kalsek, and LHP Trae Santos. Canyon View has 7 arms they have high hopes for, which is more than enough to get them through a post season run. Offensively, this will be a well rounded lineup. They have their table setters, and some bats that can do some damage in the middle of the order. All around, Canyon View is a team we will be following closely, with high expectations.
