There is a light public school schedule today, but the private schools are in full swing as key conference matchups are set to take place throughout our coverage area.

Norfolk Academy at No. 3 Greenbrier Christian
The Gators host Norfolk Academy in a TIS Conference matchup this afternoon. Greenbrier Christian is 3-0 in Conference play so far and tied for first place and the Bulldogs are 1-2 with a pair of one-run losses to Walsingham and Cape Henry. Greenbrier Christian has won its three TIS games by a combined score of 48-4 and the Gators have yet to lose a game to a team from Virginia this spring.

No. 7 St. John’s College vs. Bishop McNamara
The Cadets come into this game off of a loss Tuesday to St. Mary’s Ryken that dropped them out of first place in the WCAC and a game behind first place Bishop O’Connell. St. John’s will look to right the ship and stay close to O’Connell and Paul VI with a win.

No. 15 Briar Woods at Robinson
The Falcons take on their third straight 6A school in non-conference play this evening and they have handled both of their bigger school opponents so far, defeating Westfield and Yorktown handily as the Falcons are one of the few teams in Northern Virginia that has been able to consistently score runs so far this spring. Robinson got off to a hot start but has struggled a bit in the past few weeks as the Rams look to get back on track before returning to Concorde Conference play.

No. 18 Nansemond Suffolk at Peninsula Catholic
Another TIS matchup features the Saints going on the road to face Peninsula Catholic. Nansemond Suffolk is 2-0 so far in Conference play and is in second place, a half game behind Greenbrier Christian and Walsingham Academy.

No. 19 Potomac Falls at Stone Bridge
What is shaping up to be a deeply competitive spring in Conference 14 gets rolling tonight as a Panther team opens with the defending 5A State Champions. Stone Bridge has yet to play this week and likely will go with senior Brett Kreyer (Lafayette) on the mound as they look to rebound from a loss last Friday to Marshall. The Panthers have proven that they can win a big game so far this year, taking three games from Loudoun Valley and Millbrook over the last few weeks.

James Wood at No. 20 Millbrook
While Millbrook has dropped two games to Potomac Falls, the Pioneers are off to a 3-0 start in Conference 21A play and look to continue that hot start tonight as they take on James Wood. Millbrook has one of the most talented pitching staffs in the state and have junior Anthony Simonelli (Coastal Carolina) and senior Trey Braithwaite (Naval Academy) lined up for tonight’s game.

No. 22 Miller School at Benedictine
The Mavericks settle into the bulk of their VISAA II schedule as the travel to Benedictine this afternoon. Miller has responded to a one run loss last week to Steward with a pair of blowout, shutout wins over Roanoke Catholic and Steward. The Cadets enter the game 8-5 and have also won their last two games, riding a hot offense to those wins.

Gonzaga at No. 25 Bishop O’Connell
The Knights have been on fire the last two weeks and have launched themselves to first place in the WCAC. They clubbed DeMatha and Bishop Ireton earlier this week and likely have senior ace Rafi Vazquez (Coastal Carolina) lined up for this game. While Gonzaga has dropped three of its last four but enters the game off of a win Monday against McNamara. The Eagles have consistently pitched well all spring and Gonzaga also has their ace lined up for this game in junior Will Thomas, so look for a competitive, low-scoring affair.
