Progress Report: Austin Humphres

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

PBR has had the chance to dig through the players and numbers from the past year, we have had a chance to see some players make some significant jumps recently. Today, we will be taking a look at a "Progress Report" feature that highlights players that have shown significant improvement in their game; whether it's on the mechanical end, performance wise, physicality or in the measurable statistic department. The "Progress Report" can be a minor improvement in recent months or a substantial transformation over time. Today we will be taking a look at '22 LHP Austin Humphres (Shadow Ridge).

Looking back to last summer, Austin Humphres last attended a PBR event back in early August at our 2019 Future Games. He stood out at the event as a young LHP with some size and athleticism. He was 81-84mph with his FB and quicker arm action. His CV showed some depth with some projection at 70-71mph.

Today, Humphres has been on the rise as of late, making some significant improvements to his body and delivery. His body was already pretty ideal when you talk about a pitchers makeup. With that said, he recently gained 10-pounds of lean muscle while growing an inch taller. From the pitching side of things, we recently saw Humphres working his FB into the upper 80's (87-89mph per Rapsodo) with clean fast arm action & controlled energy coming down the mound. His CV continues to show projection as an above average pitch. Humphres was in for a solid season before the season got shut down. He threw 10 innings to the start the spring allowing one earned run on 3 hits and 7 walks while striking out 13 batters. Eyes should be on Humphres going into the summer season.

Scouting Report

8/03/19

The 6-foot-3 170 pound lefty has an ideal pitchers body, and shows tantalizing flashes.  He’s an excellent athlete with a fast arm – it’s not hard to dream on a huge improvement on the 81-84 mph FB that he showed coming in the near future.  He showed a 70-71 mph CB that had depth and projects as at least an average pitch.  Watch out for him in the future – he’s definitely trending up.

6/18/19

The ultra projectible lefty was up to 85 MPH with good downhill angle and a fastball that jumped out of his hand. He got uncomfortable swings throughout his outing, without anyone being able to get on time. His breaking ball is a work in progress but shows promise to be a future out pitch. He also was 89 from the outfield and ran a 6.96.

6-18-19 Uncommitted.  6'3" 170 with a well proportioned, athletic frame.  Continues to progrees nicely on the mound.  Clean arm action with average arm speed that projects to improve as he continues his physical maturation.  Above avgerage athlete.  Generates steep downhill plane from the forced high slot that should allow all three of his pitches to tunnel well in the future.  FB was 83-85, which is an improvement from what we have seen in the past.  True downer CB 71-74 and a solid CH 71-72.  The quick hip into open toe landing and lack of stiffness in the lead leg through his finish could cause command issues in the future, but for now his athleticism can overcome it.  With continued devlopment and some delivery clean up, he could be a highest level prospect.

1/27/19- 6’2 160-pound broad shoulder, projectable frame. The L/L comes from a high ¾ angle with pitchability and feel for all his pitches, including a fastball that got up to 83 MPH. His long arms help create a good downhill plane, hiding the ball well from hitters, working behind his body for most of his delivery. Breaking ball has the future makings of an above average pitch, showing good shape and velo behind it at 72-76 MPH. At the plate he starts with high hands, tilting barrel up as his hands work back to load. Good use of lower half to make adjustments with timing, without having to stop his swing.
