Q&A College Coach Edition: Lamar Community College Coach Crampton

By Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

The early college signing period has come and gone and Colorado had great representation among in-state and out of state schools.  Prep Baseball Report Colorado would like to bring you a closer look at many of the schools who have signed 2015 Colorado baseball players.  Our next Q&A College Coaches Edition features Lamar Community College and Head Coach Scott Crampton.  Located in Lamar, Colorado, the Runnin Lopes have a decade of dominance under their belt, averaging 40+ wins a year over the past 10 years.

PBR:  Describe Lamar C.C. Baseball to those who have not seen you play?

Crampton:  Lamar CC is a top 25 DI junior college program consistently. Lamar CC has won twelve out of the last fourteen conference titles, while averaging 41 wins a year. Lamar is a great place for a Colorado high school player to develop and advance to the next level.  LCC has placed 187 players in four year schools, and had 32 current or former players drafted.

PBR:  What do you look for in players during the recruiting process?

Crampton:  Baseball skill and future projection are key, but also important is work ethic and character.

PBR:  Who are some the most notable Colorado ballplayers you've recently had play for you?

Crampton:  Most notable is RHP Brandon McCarthy from Cheyenne Mountain High School who just recently got traded from the New York Yankees to the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Seth Loman from Doherty High School is AA/AAA with the Atlanta Braves.  Arturo Maltos-Garcia Brush High School and Tim Zufall Pueblo South were drafted in 2011.  Willy Kesler Northglenn High School was drafted in 2010.

PBR:  What are the advantages of top prospects choosing junior college instead of Division I right out of high school?

Crampton:  Getting on the field right away and competing against other freshmen and sophomores.  The development process and experience is sometimes career changing.

PBR:  What advice do you have for prospects about the recruiting process?

Crampton:  Keep all your options open and do your homework, and ask a ton of questions.  Some players sell themselves and other have to market themselves and there is a school for everyone out there.

PBR:  How do you view Colorado baseball and our players?

Crampton:  We have a ton of great coaches and great indoor facilities available now to make you a great player.  I rely heavily on Colorado players each year in the neighborhood of 75% of my roster.

PBR:  If possible tell us your fondest Lamar C.C. baseball memory to date:

Crampton:  Each year is special and I enjoy surrounding myself with great coaches and players.  To date one of the most special seasons was the 2002 season where we finished 59-5 and third at the JUCO World Series.
