Q&A With Dax Fulton About His Commitment To Vanderbilt

PBR OKWhat were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected?

Fulton- I was shocked by the early attention that I received back in the fall of my freshman year.  I was really just wanting to face tough competition and prepare for my first high school season.  I thought the recruiting process was extremely difficult.  Due to my grade classification, the NCAA would not allow a coach to contact me or my family so they were reaching out to my high school coach, summer ball coach, and PBR state director asking for me to contact them at a certain time.  This became extremely difficult as more coaches were interested in me.  However, it was all worth it in the long run and it became apparent that Vanderbilt was the right school for me after the relationship that I developed with the pitching coach, Scott Brown.

PBR OK- You committed soon after participating in this year’s PBR Future Games for Team OK/KS, describe your experience at that event.

Fulton- The PBR futures event was a tremendous experience facing great competition with a majority of D1 coaches attending.  It was by far, the most exposure at a single event that I have attended.  I enjoyed competing with my Oklahoma/Kansas teammates and made some lifelong friends.  I would encourage anyone that gets this invite to attend if you want to be seen by a majority of the colleges.  It got a little crazy after the event with numerous coaches wanting me to contact them.  PBR does a fantastic job of getting your name out in front of college coaches and they all want to see you in person and I believe this is The event.

PBR OK-What do you like most about the college you committed to, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Fulton- I wanted to play at a top tier baseball program that also had a good education system. After visiting Vanderbilt on a couple different occasions it became obvious that this was the place for me.  I had a difficult time convincing my parent that this was the place since it was approximately 11 hours away from home.  But they agreed with me after watching practice, visiting with the academic advisor, and the coaches at Vandy that this would be a good fit. I am pushed by my high school coach, Keanon Simon, and I believe that Vandy staff was going to do the same thing and get the best out of me.

PBR OK- Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Fulton- Not necessarily but my parents were hoping that I stayed closer to home.

PBR OKWhat other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Fulton- Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Arizona, and South Carolina.

PBR OK- Who is the best player you have faced in Oklahoma, and why?

Fulton-  I'm not sure about the best hitter that I have faced from in state due to the rich talent that we have in Oklahoma, but the best pitcher is Nate Wohlgemuth from Owasso. We have been battling against each other since a young age and he has great stuff on the mound.

PBR OKWhat advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Fulton- Face the best competition that you can and than be honest with yourself on self evaluations.  I try each day to improve at least 1% and overtime that will make a big difference. I would also encourage you to play on the best travel ball teams that you can so other athletes will push you to be the best.  I have been fortunate to play with a group of guys since I was 5 years old in our state and a majority of them have received Division 1 offers.

PBR OK-What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Fulton- Playing for Mustang high school in the state championship and pitching a complete game to win a state championship.  It was an awesome atmosphere and our team really got close over the year so I wanted to do my best especially for the seniors. The game was extremely close until we were able to pull away in the last inning.

PBR OKPreview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?

Fulton- I believe Mustang will be one of the favorites this year. Coach Simon works us extremely hard in the off season preparing us for another title run. He develops mental toughness through our workouts and pushes each player to be their best. I expect us to compete for another state championship this season and our players believe in Coach Simon more than ever after last year’s success.  Most people laugh at my goals, so I better not share them. I live by a Bryce Harper quote, "If they're not laughing at your dreams, your dreams aren't big enough."  I will share one goal, which is to be the best LHP in the 2020 class ranked by PBR.

PBR OKWhere do you play in the summer? And what has been your most memorable experience with them?

Fulton- I play for the Midwest Elite and we play mostly regional tournaments but we also played in the Atlanta, GA WWBA and it was a lot of fun.  They had 308 teams in the tournament and our team took 3rd this year. We played 11 games over about 7 days and the competition was good. I have played with a majority of the guys on this team for years so getting to play with them each weekend is a blast and we all push each other to get better.
