Q&A with Unsigned Senior: Kyle Riley, SS, Bloomfield Hills Lahser HS

By Mike Penn
Michigan Scouting Director

Kyle Riley, SS, Bloomfield Hills Lahser HS, 2013

Riley is a long lanky 6-foot-3 shortstop with good actions.  He shows good speed (6.82) and moves well laterally in both directions.  He does have a tendency to let the ball travel too deep when fielding but he does consistently make all of the plays.  He finishes with strong accurate throws across the diamond (81mph).  At the plate, he is still a bit raw and cuts himself off. But with his broad shoulders and big frame, expect him to add strength and progress from the offensive side.  Riley should draw a considerable amount of interest.

PBR: Where are you currently in the recruiting process?
Riley: I am currently talking with Albion College and Grand Valley State University.  Albion wants me to play infield for them. I attended a January camp at GVSU and Del Young called and suggested they like my speed and body type but they want to see me play in a game in early spring before they make their next move.

PBR: What level of baseball do you see yourself playing at the next level?
Riley: I could see myself playing at a division 1 or 2 school, as long as I get to play baseball.

PBR: What schools are you most interested in right now, and why?
Riley: Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Albion College, University of Michigan, Miami of Ohio, Hillsdale College. These are schools that I have visited and I like what they have to offer academically.  I am waiting to hear from Hillsdale and only recently considered U of M, academically.

PBR: What aspect of your game do you believe needs the most improvement?
Riley: I need to work on my mental approach towards the game. More so when I’m at the plate I need to become a smarter hitter. I need to have an approach every time I come to the plate and know exactly what the situation is and what I need to do to get on base or get the runner in.

PBR: As a player what is your greatest strength?
Riley: My greatest strength is defense. Last year I was my high school team’s defensive player of the year. I love to make plays at shortstop, especially ones that challenge me.

PBR: What are your high school team goals for the 2013 season?
Riley: As a team we want to win our league and make it out of our district in playoffs. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s has always blocked our school in the districts.  We are aiming for 21 wins in the regular season.  We have an especially tough schedule this year that includes many top Oakland County schools.

PBR: How did your 2012 high school and summer seasons go?
Riley: High school: 13 wins-21 losses. Michigan Red Sox: we did not win any tournaments as a team however we faced great competition and I greatly improved my game.

PBR: What were your stats in 2012?
Riley: I hit .428 last season with 14 doubles and 20 RBI.

PBR: What is your GPA? ACT or SAT score?
GPA:      3.58        ACT: 23

PBR: Have you decided on a major or narrowed it down?
Riley: I want to go into business school.
