INDIANAPOLIS – The Tampa Bay Rays selected Indianapolis Roncalli High School center fielder Nick Schnell with a compensatory first-round pick Monday night in the Major League Baseball Draft.  Schnell, the 32^nd overall pick, was the first of 35 players selected with ties to Indiana.  

Eighteen big-league clubs dipped into the Hoosier state for new talent, selecting four more players from Indiana high schools and 30 from 19 colleges, including nine in-state schools. 

The Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers led the way with four picks each, followed by the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers (three apiece).  Tampa Bay, the Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles. Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves took two each. 

The Toronto Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates, Miami Marlins, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants all plucked one player out of Hoosierland.  

Along with Schnell, four more Indiana high school players were drafted:  right-handers Bradley Brehmer (Indianapolis Decatur Central) and Jack Perkins (Kokomo), second baseman Jared Poland (Indianapolis Cathedral) and shortstop Tim Borden Our Lady of Providence in Clarksville).  The Orioles selected Brehmer, Perkins went to the Braves, Poland to the Red Sox, and the Indians claimed Borden.     

Schnell, Perkins, Poland and Borden all are committed to the University of Louisville, while Brehmer has signed with Wright State.   

Four Indiana University players went in the draft, while big-league clubs grabbed three apiece from Purdue and Notre Dame.  

The IU players are pitchers Jonathan Stiever (White Sox) and Tim Herrin (Indians), third baseman Luke Miller (Phillies) and outfielder Logan Sowers (White Sox).  The Boilermakers are right-hander Tanner Andrews (Marlins), catcher Nick Dalesandro (Diamondbacks) and first basemanJacson McGowan (Rays).  The Fighting Irish players selected are infielders Nick Podkul (Blue Jays) and Cole Daily (Nationals), plus outfielderMatt Vierling (Phillies). 

One apiece came from Indiana State (right-hander Ethan Larrison – D-backs);  Butler (lefty Connor Mitchell – Dodgers);  Ball State (right-handerEvan Marquardt – Reds);  Valparaiso (catcher Scott Kapers – Rangers);  Southern Indiana (catcher Logan Brown – Braves) and IU-Kokomo (right-hander Renton Poole – Rangers).  

Three former Indiana high school players were drafted out of the University of Louisville:  second baseman Devin Mann (Columbus North HS – drafted by the Dodgers),   right-hander Austin Conway (Delta HS – White Sox) and right-hander Bryan Hoeing (Batesville HS – Giants).  A fourth Louisville Cardinal, right-hander Riley Thompson, is an Evansville native who prepped in Kentucky.  Thompson was a Cubs pick.

Odds ‘N’ Ends:  The first two rounds of the draft took place Monday, June 4.  Rounds 3-10 took place Tuesday, and rounds 11-40 were held Wednesday.  

For at least five of the players, this was the second time they’ve been taken in the draft.  Riley Thompson was picked by the Yankees in 2017 (25^th round).  Jesse Wilkening was selected by the D-backs in 2015 (28^th round).  Logan Sowers went to the Padres in 2014 (31^stround).  Bryan Hoeing was a D-backs pick in 2015 (32^nd round).  

Logan Brown’s dad, Kevin Brown, caught for Pike High School (Petersburg, Ind.) and the University of Southern Indiana.  The Rangers took him in the second round of the 1994 draft, and he spent time in the big leagues with Texas (1996-97), the Blue Jays (1998-99), Brewers (2000-01), Red Sox (2002). 

Bill Sampen, the father of Caleb Sampen, was a right-hander who pitched for the Montreal Expos, Royals and Angels from 1990 to 1994.  An Illinois native, Bill currently lives in Brownsburg and operates an instructional baseball program called Samp’s Hack Shack.    

Bryan Hoeing’s cousin is right-hander Alex Meyer, who starred for Greensburg High School and was a 2011 first-round draft pick by the Nationals out of the University of Kentucky.  Meyer has seen action with the Twins (2015-16) and Angels (2016-2017) and is sitting out this season after Tommy John surgery.   

J.J. Montgomery’s brother, Christian Montgomery, was a right-hander who pitched in the Mets organization from 2012 to 2016.    

Wednesday night was a double celebration for Tim and Patty Borden of Sellersburg, Ind.  They news that their son, Tim Borden II, was selected by the Cleveland Indians came on their 20^th wedding anniversary. 

Dan Hoese, the father of Royals pick Kody Hoese, may have learned of his son’s selection before Kody did.  On Wednesday, the younger Hoese (pronounced ‘HO-see’) was in Rhode Island with the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.  The Gulls were playing the Mystic (Conn.) Schooners at Newport’s Cardines Field and, said Kody’s pop, “Unless somebody’s got a cell phone in the dugout, he doesn’t know.”
