Serfass Has Windsor Ready To Compete For State Title

WINDSOR, Ct. - The same two goals remain for Windsor head coach Joe Serfass.

“Win our division and compete for a state championship,” Serfass said.

The Warriors appear to have the pieces to make a run for a Class L title under Serfass, who began coaching at Windsor in 2010 after playing in college at East Connecticut State before going on to play professional ball as a pitcher in the Mets’ organization.

“First and foremost, I love this group character-wise and their work ethic,” noted Serfass, who has a 137-83 record in 10 seasons at the helm. “They’re a joy to be around. They will be competitive, but we’ve got a couple big question marks on paper with infield and outfield positions. Pitching-wise we have depth.”

Clark Churchill, the number one pitcher as a sophomore (2.33 ERA), and Jeremy Blackwood (4.10 ERA) are the top two arms and will pitch and share first base duties. Churchill, a Nichols College commit, is the 150th-ranked 2021 right-handed pitcher in New England while Blackwood, a LaSell College commit, is rated 72nd.

Four more right-handers are in the mix to pitch in senior Alec Lachniet, who has been the go-to guy out of the bullpen (3.10 ERA), junior Mason Glickman, the 48th-ranked 2022, and sophomore Nate Acabchuk, the number 33 rated 2023 RHP.

“Our pitchers are not overpowering, but they will compete,” Serfass explained. “I’m a big believer in the ability to compete and pound the strike zone. That’s the most important thing. I think we have the potential to have five or six guys to have depth on the mound.”

Isaac Rosario, who started as a freshman on the 2018 team that lost in the state championship game and hit .459 as a sophomore with 29 RBIs, is now a senior leader on the team and will hit in the meat of the order while playing outfield and also providing another arm pitching.

Breon Parker, an athletic junior who “plays the game with passion” according to Serfass, will also be in the outfield.

Junior Jonathan Lattimer is back at catcher after starting two years ago and the 35th-ranked 2022 backstop in New England who batted .305 in 2019 is expected to be a captain and team leader for Windsor. Glickman, a junior who hit .333 as a freshman, will play third base when not pitching with senior Julian Rivera, a second baseman in 2019 with a .326 batting average, the shortstop.

“It’s no secret, our schedule is very difficult,” said Serfass, who led Windsor to the Class L semifinals in 2015 in addition to the runner-up state finish in 2018. “But we know if we show up and play like we’re supposed to we’ll be okay. We play six games in our pod and 14 crossovers in our division and outside our division.”
