State Tournament: Quarterfinals

State Tournaments began Thursday at 7 different location in three corners of the state. Here are the highlights from Day 2 of the 3A State Tournament; with notes and scores from other tournaments across the state.

Mayflower High School 8 vs Genoa Central High School 1

Mayflower HS defeated Genoa Central 8-1 behind a dominate performance by 2015 RHP Tyler Godwin. Godwin struck out 14 over 6 innings pitched scattering 4 hits and giving up just 1 earned run. Offensively the Eagles received a big performance from 2015 C Justin Case. He went 2-4 with a home run, triple and 4 RBI’s. Mayflower advances to the Semi-Finals today vs Benton Harmony Grove HS.

Benton Harmony Grove High School 5 vs Rivercrest High School 3

Benton Harmony Grove HS beat Rivercrest HS 5 to 3 in a back in forth contest.

Benton Harmony Grove scored first in the top of the 2nd of a 2015 CIF Logan Clay solo home run.

 Rivercrest answered right back scoring 2 runs in the bottom half. 2015 Dylan McClemore got things started with a double, and later scored on 2016 OF Blaine Richardson 2 RBI Single.

The Cardinals put up 3 to regain the lead in the top of the 3rd off three hits and two walks. The big blow came from 2016 CIF Brinson Cornwell who hit a double to drive in 2 and later scored.

Rivercrest answered with a run in the 4th off a 2015 CIF Jon Mark Horton single to narrow the gap 4-3.

2015 RHP Tyler Hamilton entered the game with 1 out in the 4th and that was the ball game. Hamilton pitched 4.66 innings allowing just 1 hit while striking out 5.

Horatio High School 17 vs Harding Academy 3

Horatio HS used to big innings to defeat Harding Academy 17-3.

Horatio didn’t waste any time scoring 9 runs in the top of the first, on 5 hits and 4 walks. The highlight of the inning was when 2016 C/RHP Cole Boyd crushed his 8th home run on the season for a grand slam.

2016 Reid Maddox came in, in relief for Harding Academy but the damage was done and 2016 RHP Tanner Vaught was tough pitching with a big lead. Vaught threw 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 for the victory.

Boyd led the offensive onslaught going 2-3 with 2 walks, a double, grand slam, 4 RBIs, 3 runs scored.

Horatio advances to play Fordyce who beat Bismark 3-1.

2015 RHP Andy Pagnozzi threw a complete game no-hitter to lead Fayetteville HS past Central HS 10-0 in 5 innings. 2015 RHP/OF Cody Davenport had a good day at the plate; 1-3 with a walk, home run, 2RBIs and 3 runs scored. Fayetteville HS advances to play Conway HS who defeated Southside 4-2.

Bentonville HS used a big first inning to cruise to an 8-5 victory over Heritage HS. The Tigers scored 6 in the first behind a 2015 MIF Cody Scroggins double followed by a 2015 OF Paul Rouse triple, Heritage handed out some gifts with walks and errors that Bentonville cashed in for runs. 2016 RHP Kasey Ford cruised for 6 innings allowing no runs while striking out 9. Heritage fought in the 7th scoring 5 runs, too little too late as BHS advances to play Har-Ber HS. Har-Ber beat Cabot HS 8-1.

6A

All four teams that earned a bye in past the first round advances to the semi-finals as Benton HS defeated Marion HS 8-0. Sheridan HS defeated Greenwood HS 7-0. Russellville HS defeated El Dorado HS 11-4 and in the night cap Jonesboro HS defeated Alma HS 8-4.

Today match ups Benton HS vs Russellville HS and Sheridan vs Jonesboro HS.

5A

White Hall continues its run to defending the 5A State Title beating Valley View 5-1. White Hall will play Sylvan Hills today in the Semi-finals.

Harrison HS and Magnolia HS swung their way to the finals. Harrison beat Jacksonville HS 7-3 and Magnolia beat Greene County Tech HS 6-3. Those teams will meet in the other semi-final contest.

4A

Arkadelphia HS out slugged Lonoke 20-4 making quick work of the Jackrabbits to advance to the semi-finals.

Star City HS beat Pea Ridge HS 9-5 fighting off rain delays and a tough Pea Ridge team to advance to the other Semi-Final.

Neither team knows who their opponent will be as Shiloh Christian HS vs Hamburg and Ashdown vs Brookland HS was rained out in the late games yesterday. Those games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM. The winners of those contest will turn around and play Arkadelphia HS and Star City HS. The possibility of an all 4A south semi-final is still possible.

Overall

Russellville HS, White Hall HS, Arkadelphia HS and Junction City HS are all still in their respective tournaments, defending their 2014 state titles, an impressive feat.
