Summer Kickoff I.D. - Prospect Analysis
OF/Corner INF 

Roman Golston LHP / 1B / Ridgeview, SC / 2020

Medium build with durable lower half and high waist. Compact actions with shorter limbs. Struggled with consistent feel for the glove at 1st base, but was able to overcome some mechanical issues with athletic ability. Choppy footwork around the bag and inconsistent timing on stretches to throws off line. Athletic enough to play a COF position if necessary. Balanced stance with a slight crouch, outside the shoulders. Toe tap timing mechanism and minimal hand load. Lofted path with occasional barrel release. Good energy transfer into contact, maximizes the current power. Primary LHP with controlled repeatable delivery. Leaked out early at times and the arm struggled to catch up. Chased a high 3/4 arm slot down the mound with a 78 mph FB that showed heavy tendencies. Showed scattered feel for a breaking ball with plus potential at 66-69 mph.  

 

 

Dwight Priest Jr. OF / OF / Northwestern, SC / 2020

Athletic OF with a 5-11, 170lb lean frame high waist and projectable build. Elite level runner with long easy stride and sub maximal look. (6.41 laser timed sixty) Struggled to consistently time pitches in BP with a steep attack angle and an inside out bat path. Sprayed ground balls and low line drives to all fields. Short arm stroke and choppy pro step produced throws on target with limited carry at 73 mph. 

 

 

Lamar Petties, Jr. C / OF / York, SC / 2020

Physical profile with broad shoulders and lean strength throughout. Body easily plays at the next level with current frame and projectable strength. Passes the eye test. Taller, slightly open stance with a low hand set. Long/low stride showed tendencies of landing heavy at times. Muscles the barrel through the zone with a flat path and showed occasional power potential. Aggressive pro step produced accurate throws to the target at 77 mph. 

 

 

Rusty Chappell 1B / RHP / Abbeville, SC / 2022

6 footer that plays true to the listed 208lbs. Square shoulders and thicker through the mid section, young enough to hold some limited projection. Will need to mature physically to reach potential. Stance right at the shoulders with a quick toe-tap timing mechanism pushes the hands deep over the back side. Limited coil of the barrel at foot strike pushes the barrel through the zone with a flat path. Abbreviated hip rotation and limited ability to stay behind the baseball. Stretch exclusive on the mound, stabbing take away with abbreviated arm action on the backside. Worked slightly closed of his line to a H3Q arm slot w/ a 66-68 mph FB and mixed a 60-61 mph CB and 57-58 mph CH. 

 

 

Jalen Morris 3B / RHP / Dreher, SC / 2020

6-0, 182lb frame with broad hips and thick lower half. Room to finish development through the torso and upper body. Medium high leg kick, landed without gaining much ground. Rotational through the front side with a flat bat path. Present strength muscles the barrel through contact and creates occasional carry. Stop and start tempo working to ground balls. Smoot hands with some feel present. Slower transfer into a H3Q release with accurate throws and limited carry at 67 mph. Knee to knee leg lift on the mound gathers the weight on the back side with a full arm action and OTT slot. Worked downhill with good extension and showed feel for a CH as a primary offspeed pitch.  

 

 

Parker Callahan OF / RHP / York Comprehensive, SC / 2021

Slender frame with length in the lower half and moderate projectiblity. Toe tap timing mechanism lands the stride foot slightly closed. Steep attack angle produced low line drives and ground balls. Inconsistent extension, tied himself up on some balls on the inner half. Carried throws to the target with an aggressive pro step and surprising arm strength. (77 OF Velo) On the mound, reached a balance point just above the belt with a slight rotational delivery. Full arm action on the back side with an abbreviated follow through and little extension down the mound. FB velocity 71-74. 

 

 

Cooper Zohner OF / RHP / Clover , SC / 2023

Square shoulders and medium build. Young player whose frame will support additional player development. Stride foot lands controlled with good separation of the hands and lower half. Slight turn of the barrel at the top of the load whips the barrel through contact with a lofted path. Good present power with additional power potential. Short arm action from the outfield gets the ball out quickly will need to see an increase in arm strength in order to improve carry. Balance point at the belt with a slightly abbreviated arm stroke on the back and a H3Q delivery. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape with potential to turn into a plus offering. 

 

 

AJ Tolbert OF / 1B / Orangeburg Prep, SC / 2021

6-1, 200lb frame with strong build nearing his physical peak. Struggled at times with body control, but should not be an issue as he matures. Taller stance with a knee to knee load, vertical bats gets limited coil at the top. Barrel is flat through the zone and he showed a tendencies to be top hand strong. Occasional lag of the barrel generated pop at times. Long OTT arm action from the OF, takes some time to get the ball out. Throws were on target with moderate carry. 

 

 

Terrance Gist OF / Greenville Senior, SC / 2021

Rankings  StateRank: 33 / POS: 8

Athletic OF with broad shoulders, narrow hips, and strong frame. Profile suggests he will continue to develop. Struggled early to land the side foot on time but showed advanced raw power when the swing was timed up. Lofted bat path and enough present carry to drive balls into the gaps. (89 mph EV) Body control will need to improve in the OF to maximize ceiling. Fell off line with a uncontrolled pro step and muscled the throws to the target with a 3/4 to H3Q release. Athletic ability gives him a reasonable floor in the OF with upside.
