The IA Summer Preseason I.D. was an opportunity for 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 prospects from all reaches of Iowa to showcase themselves and see where they were at before the Iowa high school summer season. There were many breakout performances, opportunities to see new players, and create an extensive follow list of prospects to see over the course of the Summer. Many individuals placed themselves into the fray for our 2016 and 2017 state-wide player rankings which will be released soon.

The Prep Baseball Report Iowa's Preseason All-State event took place on Sunday May 3rd at WDM Valley HS in W. Des Moines, IA. The showcase featured over 30 prospects who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff, college coaches, and professional scouts.

Today we will be taking a look at the pitchers who attended the event.

pitching Prospects

Gregory Bennett, 2B/RHP, Western Dubuque, 2017
Bennett is a 5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Ran a 7.06 60 at the event. Upright slightly open stance to start. Transfers weight well through contact with good extension. Has balance and rhythm in swing. Hands are loose and head is quiet. Stays on top of baseball and uses the middle of the field. Strength in swing is evident with 89 mph exit velocity off tee. Glove is soft and has above average range. Above average ability for second baseman. Throws are accurate and have carry. 81 mph arm strength across. On the mound shows some athleticism. Rock and fire type mechanics. Front foot gets outside of knee. Lands inline and closed to plate. Long extended arm action producing 80-81 mph fastballs with life. Curveball has 11/5 shape with late break for strikes. Has good feel for changeup with varying action in the zone. Overall High Follow as offensive 2B with athletic ability to compete on mound.

Cole Coffin, RHP/3B, Dowling Catholic, 2017
6-foot-3, 175-pound 2-way player. Ran a 7.34 60. Right-handed hitter with solid rhythm and balance in swing. Positions body in good launch position and transfers weight well through swing. Stays inside baseball at contact and uses middle of field with solid contact. 76 mph exit velocity off tee. Fields up to down; late defensive position. Solid glove and has adequate range. Makes routine plays. Has quiet defensive actions with ability to slow plays down. Accurate throws across at 74 mph. Compact delivery on mound. Lands slightly open with good direction to plate. Average finish on release. Short arm action. Has quick arm with fastball. Fastball mostly straight at 73-75 mph. 12/6 breaking ball with loose gradual break. Loses arm speed on off-speed. Tends to shorten arm stroke with changeup. Shows ok fade at the plate at 65-68 mph.

Zach Hendrickson, RHP, Mason City, 2017
6-foot-3, 175-pound sophomore with projectable body on mound. High waist with long legs and room for added strength. Crouched posture at balance point. Short stride with good direction to plate. Lands open. Short 2-piece arm action. Fastball jumps out of hand and on hitter. Fastball was downward plane at 78-81 mph. Throws curveball at 69-70 mph with 12/6 shape and above average break with depth. Changeup has solid fade and sink and is thrown near fastball arm speed. Strong follow for 2017 class with hopes of strength gains and physical maturity along with tweaks to posture and pitching mechanics.

Ross Hingst, LHP/C/OF, Waukee, 2017
Hingst is a 2017 utility player from Waukee. Solid build at 5-foot-8, 165-pounds. Ran a 7.62 60. Right-handed hitter with strength and pop to pull side of field. Open stance and strides in-line to pitcher. Balance is above average in swing. Shows some looseness and rhythm with hands. Head stays on through contact. Moves aggressively in outfield. Fields with confidence. Shows accuracy to bag with 77 mph arm strength from ¾ slot. Shows ability behind the plate for left-hander. Is flexible and moves around well behind the dish. Has receiving ability. Side saddle on catch and throw. Exchanges are clean and arm works well. Flashed events best pop time at 1.95. Fast tempo on mound. Has control in mechanics. Works very fast. Short turn and closed in balance point. Hides ball from hitter. Lands closed at times with varying degree of finish. Arm is clean from short arm action and high ¾ slot. Fastball shows slight sink at 75-78 mph. Curveball has average break and is thrown for strikes at 66-67 mph. Changeup has fade and is around zone. Also uses a knuckleball.

Will Hochberger, C/RHP, Dowling Catholic, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound left-handed hitting catcher/RHP. Ran a 8.13 60 at event. Open stance. Strides in-line and front foot is open at contact. Shows balance in swing. Pre-set hand slot with no load. Uphill swing plane with minimal weight shift through at contact. Pull approach at plate. 73 mph exit velocity off tee. Exchange is clean and short to throwing hand. Creates good direction to target with lower half. Releases from low ¾ slot creating tail on throws. 2.22-2.35 pop times with 72 mph arm strength. Quick tempo on mound. Travels across rubber in delivery. Lands in-line and open to plate. Short ¾ arm action is clean. Upright finish upon release. Fastball shows varying cut and run at 73-75 mph topping out at 77 mph on a flat plane. Breaking ball shows 11/5 shape with average break at 65-66 mph.

Carson Parker, SS/RHP, Mason City, 2017
5-foot-8, 150-pound 2-way player. Ran a 7.34 60. Right-handed hitter with solid balance and rhythm in swing. Closed stance and strides across body cutting off hips. Low hand set creating lift in swing and flashes of pop to pull side of field. Loose hands and creates above average bat speed. 78 mph exit velocity off tee. Shows quality feet defensively. Quiet actions and plays down to up with energy and feel for position. Ability to throw from different angles and arm is accurate at 71 mph. Small compact delivery on mound with ability to consistently pound zone. Short balance point. Lands slightly across body to plate losing lower half. Some arm quickness with moderate effort on fastball. Fastball was 71-74 mph with slight sink. Curveball was 60-63 mph with loose spin and 11/5 shape. Wrist was stiff with changeup; losing action at plate at 65-67 mph.

Chandler Poell, RHP/3B, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound 2-way player. Ran a 7.88 60. Square stance with ok balance. Some rhythm. Simple swing with short finish and works down through baseball creating line-drive contact. 73 mph exit velocity off tee. Shows average actions defensively. Makes routine plays. Arm is playable across the diamond. Still growing into body. 76 mph arm strength across. Stays in control on mound with a lot of moving parts. Good balance and lands slightly closed. Has quality extension to plate. Long arm action and fastball is down-hill to plate at 76-78 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape with flashes of above average late break. Shows decent feel for changeup; slows arm in delivery. Split is usable with solid action in bottom of zone.

Sam Powell, 3B/RHP/OF, Waukee, 2016
One of the surprise players of the event. Powell is 6-foot-1, 177-pound player who projects very well physically. Ran a 6.94 60 at the event. Had solid numbers across the board working out at multiple positions. Tall stance with balance. Short to contact and has flashes of above average power. Has loose hands and uses them well in swing. Would benefit from staying in zone longer with swing and improving extension through and after contact. 85 mph exit velocity off tee. Aggressive routes and shows athletic actions in outfield. Arm is long and loose with good accuracy to target. 85 mph arm strength from outfield. Shows soft hands and ability in infield. Third base actions. Ok range laterally. Throws flat-footed at times across diamond affecting carry and accuracy. 81 mph infield velocity. Projectable body on mound. Throws downhill and fastball shows life. Has hand speed and arm is quick. Fastball was 81-83 mph and projects to increase. Curveball had 12/6 shape with tight spin and late break. Split is heavy and shows late running action in bottom of zone. High Follow through summer.

Ben Probst, RHP, Dowling Catholic, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound. High waist. Lean body. Controlled delivery with balance. Lands slightly closed and across body. Long loose arm circle and throws from high ¾ slot. Minimal effort in release. Ball comes out well when extended and finishes to plate. Late run on fastball at 79-81 mph. 12/6 breaking ball with solid rotation and break. Pushes changeup at times but looks to be above average in future. Follow for 2017 class.

Sam Rogers, RHP, WDM Valley, 2017
6-foot-2, 225-pound right-handed pitcher. Will continue to add weight and strength on frame. Pitches primarily out of stretch. High leg kick with collapse at balance point. Drop and drive to plate. Lands across body in delivery. Some deception with glove side and hides baseball from hitter. Low ¾ slot with late 2-seam action on fastball 79-82 mph. Fastball shows flashes of being very heavy. Curveball has 11/5 shape with small break. Pitch tends to back up on him at times. Changeup is thrown at fastball arm speed with ok fade on a flat plane. Physical right-hander that will get bigger and stronger; hope for velocity to continue to increase with body.

Jon Rozeboom, RHP/1B, Waukee, 2016
Physical 6-foot-3, 210-pound frame. Ran a 7.22 60 at this event. Square stance with deep load. Front heel turn trigger to swing. Swings from backside with minimal weight shift through zone. Has strength and creates above average bat speed. Stays in middle of field and has solid power to gaps. Plays up to down defensively on left side of infield. Glove is solid and range is average. Makes routine plays with average actions and feet. Throws are accurate across at 76 mph. Short 2-piece arm action on mound. Front foot leaks outside of knee effecting balance at times. Fastball is down-hill and heavy. Stays in bottom of zone at 79-82 mph for strikes. Shows average feel for breaking ball with 11/5 shape and sharp late break. Solid feel for changeup in bottom of zone for strikes. Ground ball type pitcher with strong/durable body.

Connor Schatzberg, RHP/OF, WDM Valley, 2017
Lean athletic 2-way player at 5-foot-9, 145-pounds. Ran a 7.78 60. Simple quiet swing with line drive swing plane. Stays on top of ball creating solid ground balls and line-drives. Uses middle of field and has solid approach. 85 mph exit velocity off tee. Quick feet and works hard in outfield. Solid athletic actions and throws are accurate on bag. Average arm action from ¾ slot producing 81 mph arm strength from outfield. Up tempo delivery with athleticism on mound. Solid direction to plate. One-piece arm action at times with pause in back of arm stroke. Will lead with elbow on release. Fastball was 76-77 with flashes of late sink. Wobbly breaking ball with 12/6 shape at 63-66 mph. Changeup had above average fade and Split had solid run and sink.

Daniel Tillo, LHP, Sioux City North, 2015
Tillo is a 6-foot-4, 215-pound left-handed pitcher. Uncommitted at time of event. Physical build with wide shoulders, narrow waist, and present strength. Has very good athleticism. 2015 Iowa Gatorade Player of Year in basketball.  Shows rhythm and balance in delivery. Strides in-line to home plate and keeps hips and weight back in sequence. Controlled front side and repeats mechanics well. Fastball was 85-88 mph with varying cut and sink. Curveball has flashes of tight rotation with short break at 70-73 mph and thrown for strikes. Uses a 2-seam for a changeup with late action at 80-83 mph. Recruiting interest in baseball has exploded since event and is currently weighing numerous options. Committed to University of Kentucky.

Dylan Voves, OF/RHP, Mason City, 2017
Voves is a 5-foot-9, 145-pound 2-way player who hits right-handed. Ran a 7.31 60. Shows quality rhythm and balance in box. Transfers weight well through contact with good extension. Linear actions in box with flat line-drive swing plane. Consistent solid contact to middle-pull side of field. 80 mph exit velocity off tee. Active in outfield and plays with energy. Shows ability to get behind fly balls and works aggressively through ground balls. Short clean arm action in outfield. Arm is accurate and has on-line carry with 80 mph arm strength. Solid follow as he continues to mature physically. High leg kick delivery on mound with moderate effort. Lands in-line and open to catcher. 2-piece clean arm action from over-the-top slot. Fastball is 75-77 mph with decent tilt to plate. Curveball has sharp late break in zone for strikes with small shape. Changeup/Spit is below average right now and needs to be developed more.

Storm Wagner, RHP, Boone, 2016
Wagner is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed pitcher from Boone HS. Controlled delivery. Quicker pace to balance point. Front foot tends to get outside of knee in balance point. Short clean arm action from high ¾ slot. Upright finish upon release. Fastball shows downward tilt to plate and keeps in bottom of zone consistently at 69-72 mph. Tends to slow arm down on curveball showing loose gradual break at 58-60 mph. Average action on changeup and is around zone.

DeShawn Welch, RHP, Indianola, 2016
Welch continues to blossom physically and is projectable as he enters the summer of his junior year. Controlled delivery and rhythm. Consistently throws strikes and is around zone with 4 pitches. Strides in-line to plate and finishes pitches well. Short clean arm action from high ¾ to OT slot. Some head jerk on release due to high slot. Overall minimal effort on release. Curveball lacks arm speed; slider is better at present time with greater velocity and action. Strong follow through summer; with hopes of velocity increase.

Andrew Zimmerman, RHP, Johnston, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed pitcher with average build. Higher leg kick with some collapse at balance point.  2-piece arm action with wrap on backside. Arm is clean out front from short OT slot. Fastball shows tilt and sink at 78-80 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape with solid spin and break. Slider is firm on a flat plane with flashes of small late break. Changeup is thrown for strikes with above average fade. Overall shows good feel for all pitches and is in/around zone with all four.
