Nathan Rode and PBR Staff

The 2019 PBR Future Games are underway at LakePoint in Georgia with more than 500 uncommitted players from around the country playing in front of more than 200 college recruiters. Thursday marked the first day of games and each team submitted a top performer for the day.

Team Alabama
2021 RHP/3B Trent Hodgdon (Smiths Station HS, AL) was impressive as a two-way player Thursday. On the mound, his fastball was 85-88 mph with late life and he had good shape to a breaking ball that kept hitters off balance. Offensively, he was 2-for-2 with an RBI double and single in Alabama’s 4-1 win over Florida.

Team Arizona
2021 MIF/OF Tyler Kearney (Mountain Pointe HS, AZ) has a long, rangy frame at 6 feet, 165 pounds. He used a flat path that’s in the zone for a long time to hammer a triple in the right-center field gap, driving in two runs. He later scored. He followed that by scorching a line-drive single back up the middle. He also showed his defensive versatility by making plays at shortstop and at both outfield corners.

Team Arkansas/Kansas
2021 SS Wil French (Valley View HS, AR) went 2-for-2 with two singles, an RBI and run scored. True to his approach, both were line drives with one to the opposite field and the other to his pull side.

Team California
2021 3B Patrick Keighran (Serra HS, CA) had a hard groundout in his first at-bat and then took a 2-1 fastball for a ground rule double. Defensively, he shows good lateral movement with soft hands, a strong arm and the ability to make throws from multiple angles.

Team Canada
A 6-foot-1, 175-pounder, 2021 RHP Micah Bucknam (Fraser Valley HS, BC) was outstanding in his two-plus innings of work. He has a clean arm action through a 3/4 slot with athleticism to his delivery and room to carry more strength. His arm is short in the back and quick out front, allowing him to work on a downhill plane with a fastball at 87-91. He mixed in a slider with late bite at 77 and showed feel for a changeup.

Team Carolinas
2021 LHP Cyle Phelan (Fuquay-Varina HS, NC) has a stocky, physical build at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds. He pounded the zone with a fastball/breaking ball combination that created swings and misses in the zone and chases out of it. He punched out four of the six hitters he faced. His fastball was 84-88, sitting 86-88 in putaway situations. Most of the swings were late and, at times, awkward, suggesting the fastball played up. The breaking ball worked with hard, late tilt, ranging from 72-75.

Team Connecticut
2021 RHP/OF Carlos Pena (Salisbury School, CT) has a strong, athletic frame at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds. A two-way player, he was 88-92 with heavy bore to his fastball, which comes out of his hand well. The breaking ball was 74-78 with slurvy break, as he gets on the side of it, but it showed depth at times. At the plate, he has above-average power. He took a quality swing on a deep flyout to center field. He also tracked the ball well in right field.

Team Florida
2021 LHP Carsten Finnvold (American Heritage-Delray HS, FL) is a long-armed, lanky southpaw with feel for three pitches. The fastball has some arm-side run, sitting 82-84 and touching 86 with a 2080 spin rate. That is boosted by a fading changeup at 72-74 and a good, sharp slider.
