THE FIVE

In this edition of The Five, we will give you five uncommitted prospects in Louisiana’s 2021 class that performed well at PBR events throughout the years. The 2019 Underclass Games saw solid performances by Ian Montz (Acadiana HS, LA) and Ethan Medlin (Barbe HS, LA). The 2019 All State Games brought on a high level performance by Evan Joubert (St. Louis Catholic HS, LA). Our 2020 Border Battle with PBR Texas saw Kameron Edwards (Barbe HS, LA) have a standout day while Baylor Leonard (Ascension Catholic HS, LA) strong potential at the 2020 Top Prospect Games.

Ian Montz OF / LHP / Acadiana, LA / 2021

Ranked in the top 500 Nationally and tenth overall in the state. Long, rangy 6-foot-2 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Loose body, advanced athlete turned in a 6.69 60-yard dash. Showed athleticism, loose actions, easy body control and advanced arm strength with easy carry on throws during defensive workouts posting an 87 mph position velocity. The left-handed hitter hits from a tall, balanced set up, hands around back shoulder, small leg lift loading onto backside creating forward momentum, front leg braces well creating advanced bat speed and delivering a short compact stroke. Uses a line-drive approach, and sprays it around to all fields with advanced bat speed producing an exit velocity of 83 mph. Continued to impress on the summer circuit as he made strong strides in his development. High end talent that will be an impact guy at the next level.

 

 

 

Ethan Medlin OF / RHP / Barbe , LA / 2021

Average 5-foot-11, 155-pound frame with room to add strength. Showed athleticism all weekend, impacted the game on the bases with instincts and footspeed, posted a laser-timed 6.76 60-yard dash. Right-handed hitter hits from balanced setup, works backwards in load with simple shift of weight, and short stride. Line-drive type approach with level, flat path, consistent quality at-bats throughout the weekend, accurate barrel, top of the order type with bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 92 mph. Athletic defender with average hands, quick first step, solid footwork, takes quality angles, fields balls out front and athletically with clean exchanges. Short arm action into high-3/4 release with above average arm strength with carry and accuracy, produced a positional velocity of 89 mph.

 

 

 

Evan Joubert SS / 3B / St. Louis Catholic, LA / 2021

Medium 5-foot-10, 188-pound frame. Right-handed hitter that hits from a tall, athletic setup with hands starting at shoulder height. Simple leg lift rhythm with short stride and solid balance. Ground ball/ line drive contact with level path and bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 87 mph. Defender that worked through balls well with easy, smooth footwork and soft, receptive hands. Clean exchanges into a short high-3/4 release with accuracy that recorded an outfield positional velocity of 83 mph. Ran a 7.11 60-yard dash.

 

 

Kameron Edwards OF / OF / Barbe, LA / 2021

Maturing 5-foot-9, 148-pound frame. Left-handed hitter that starts from a tall, balanced setup. Smooth leg lift loading into a short stride with a short, loose stroke and high finish through the zone that created ground ball/line-drive contact; posting an exit velocity of 87 mph. Defender works through ball well with athletic footwork and receptive hands out front. Clean exchanges as he works into crow-hop and short high-3/4 release producing an outfield positional velocity of 82 mph. Ran a 6.59 60-yard dash.

 

 

Baylor Leonard 2B / RHP / Ascension Catholic, LA / 2021

Athletic 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Right-handed hitter that hits from a tall, open stance using a leg kick to get to even, landing firm against a strong front side. Small hand load to around the back shoulder slotting the barrel next to the ear. Rotational swing with an on-plane path with average bat speed and length through contact. Wants to elevate with a pull side approach; posting an exit velocity of 87 mph. Athletic defender with bounce. Good feet that work through balls with active footwork while showing soft hands with clean, midline exchanges into medium arm action and high-3/4 release with effort producing an infield positional velocity of 90 mph across the infield. Above average athlete, ran a 6.89 60-yard dash.

Right-handed pitcher with an athletic delivery. Medium arm action into an over-the-top release. Creates some deception from slightly cross-fire delivery, working across his body with a quick arm and moderate effort, falling off to the first base side. Attacks the zone with the fastball at 83-86 mph with average command and downhill angle. Breaking ball shows average spin with rolling 12/6 action and commanded for strikes.
