Prep Baseball Report

Uncommitted Spotlight: 3B Skyler Thellman

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. Starting today, we will be spotlighting several uncommitted prospects to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level.

Over the past nine months or so we have has multiple looks at 3B/RHP Skyler Thellman (Lakeview Academy, 2021) from the 2019 Underclass Games to his time with the Georgia Jackets at LakePoint to Lakeview Academy this spring. One thing is evident with Thellman, he has continued to physically mature, adding another inch to his frame. He now stands a lean, lanky 6-foot-4, 190-pounds with plenty of room to fill out. Thellman has always had a good feel for the barrel and shown the ability to spray line drives around the park. Since our first look, he has really cleaned up his swing, lowering his hands and shortening up his load. Equipped with quick hands, this has allowed for him to gain more extension through the zone and drive the ball with even more force, especially to the pull-side. Thellman has the potential to be a real long ball threat with continued strides like these, and added strength to his projectable frame.

Scouting Report

3/06/20 - 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed hitting infielder, long, lanky frame, athletic build, looks to have leaned out his frame some since we last saw him over the summer, listed as a primary third baseman, but started at shortstop against St. Francis. Offensively, hit out of the two-hole, open setup, hands start low, loading back and up as he strides to a balanced position. Good hand-eye coordination at the plate, has consistently shown the ability to compete at the plate, quick hands and good feel for the barrel, takes a middle approach, driving the ball gap-to-gap. More power to come as he fills out his frame with more mass.

10/01/19 - 6-foot-3 175 pounds. Thellman flat banged all weekend long, it didn’t matter the velocity or the type of arm he was facing, he just flat raked and was on base in 5 of 7 appearances alone on Sunday. He had two doubles, one in each gap to show off his true gap to gap pop. Thellman also showed a tremendous awareness for the strike zone drawing multiple walks on the day to have himself a day. Defensively he made a couple of really nice defensive plays including a backhand in the hole to nail a runner advancing to third on the groundball. Thellman left the scouts with a tremendous impression and there is a lot to like about the prospect.

5/28/19 - 6-foot-3, 175-pound, right-handed hitting two-way prospect, long frame with plenty of room to fill out. On the mound, arm works long, showing low on the back-side to a ¾ slot. Stretch-only, drop and drive delivery, works in-line, opens front-side, lands square, finishes upright. Fastball sat 80-81, topped out at 83, flashed run. Curveball, 11/5 shape, gradual break, 70-71. Changeup showed fade at 74. Ran a 7.66 laser-timed 60. Offensively, wide, open setup, short stride, hands rise on load, some barrel wrap, remains balanced. Gap-to-gap type hitter, barrel path produces loft, 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively, short arm action, ¾ slot, accurate, 82 across the infield. Fields the ball cleanly with a soft glove, flashed quick hands.
