It has been a busy 10 months since the last official update to the Nebraska class of 2018 rankings. Today the list extends to 75 prospects, as the Spring and Summer season allowed the Prep Baseball Report scouting staff to track down emerging talent at high school games, tournaments and showcases.

There is some shuffling among the top 20, but Colby Gomes (RHP, Millard West) still remains #1 in the rankings. We had the chance to see Gomes four times on the mound in 2017 and he hasn't made a huge jump from 2016 but still has times of dominance. His 6'5, 205 pound frame has continued to fill out. The Nebraska recruits fastball sits in the 86-90 mph range, topping at 91. His 78-81 mph breaking ball is devastating at times. At this point,  Gomes still has the most raw upside in the class and it will be interesting to see if he can make a jump into one of the top prospects in the country for the 2018 draft.

+ Shay Schanaman (SS/RHP, Grand Island) has continue to show in the field and on the mound why he is the top two way guy in the class. The Nebraska commit is an above average athlete with a strong arm, consistent actions with potential to hit for power and average at the next level. On the mound, Schanaman tops out around 90 mph with his fastball that compliments a sharp 76-80 mph breaking ball.

+ Kyle Perry (LHP, MIllard South) put together the top spring seasons on the mound in the state. We had the opportunity to see three of Perrys starts in the spring, he sets the tone with his 82-86 mph fastball to both sides on the plate. His ability to dictate his breaking ball  kept hitters off balance and led to 90 strikes out. If Perry can make a jump into the 86-90 mph range going in the 2018 season it could lead to some strong interest for scouts in the 2018 draft.

+ Austin Schultz (SS, Norris) and Caleb Feekin (LHP, Papillion LaVista) are the lone uncommitted prospects in the Top 10 of the 2018 rankings at this point. Schultz originally committed to Wichita State in the fall of 2016 but recently put himself back on the market after some coaching changes. Schultz has a muscular compact build with plus speed and an above average arm. He's been gaining plenty of attention playing travel baseball this summer in Colorado. Feekin stands at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds and has shown swing and miss stuff this summer while pitching for his American Legion team. He sits in the 80-84 mph range, topping at 86. He has good feel for his low 70's breaking ball that has 11/5 shape.

+ Kansas State commit Dylan Phillips (1B/LHP, Creighton Prep) has proven to the top hitter in the 2018 class. He hits for average and power to all fields and has strong feel for the strike zone. Phillips has also shown times of being dominant on the mound. His fastball has been anywhere from 80-85 mph throughout the year and has strong feel for sweeping 2/8 shaped 75-77 mph breaking ball.

+ Zach Argo (RHP, Norris) upside might not be as high as some others in the top 10 but he's continue to develop. The Air Force commits fastball topped at 90 mph this spring mostly sitting in the 84-88 mph range while leading Norris to the state championship game.

+ Drew Gilin (SS, MIllard South) had a big fall last year for the Nebraska Prospects which ultimately led to his commitment to Nebraska. He's struggled at times this year at the plate but he's got strong tools across the board and his bat at times shows why he's still consider one of the top prospects in Nebraska.

+ Owen Richter (C, Creighton Prep) is still the top catching prospect in the 2018 class. An above average defender and advance receiver, Richter bat has continued to develop and shown some gap power.

+ Matt Koenigsman (OF, Bellevue West) is the only member in the top 15 who was not in these rankings when they were originally released in 2016. Koenigman emerged this spring for the Thunderbird's with a quick compact swing that consistently finds the barrel. He's got above average arm from the outfield and runs well enough to stay in the outfield at the next level.

We get asked how these rankings are complied. Our PBR staff digs through endless amount of information we have complied in the last year and look at these things:

  • Where prospects are currently at
  • How do they project in the future
  • Statistical Performance
  • How they've progressed in the last year

We are in the process of putting together the 2019 rankings to be released midway through the fall.
