Updated and Expanded Class of 2016 Player Rankings

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

It’s been since mid-summer since we last updated the Class of 2016 player rankings meaning it’s that time again.  Since the last update we have seen some players improve their stock by making strides in their game, while others showcased their abilities to the PBR Kentucky staff for the first time, and based on their performance, find themselves as new additions to the rankings.

In addition to some shuffling of players who were previously ranked in the top 75, the rankings have been expanded to include the top 110 players in the 2016 class.  We will revisit these rankings again after our winter events for further updating and expansion.  Here are some items of note.

+ Cameron Planck (Rowan County HS) took over the No. 1 spot a few months ago following his performance at the PBR Future Games as a member of Team Kentucky and remains at the top.  In short, Planck’s stuff was electric as his fastball touched 91 mph, but it was his low 80’s slider that set him apart from others at the event.  It is a true swing-and-miss pitch for the 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander and will serve him well in the ACC at Louisville.

+ Easton McGee (Hopkinsville HS) remains in the No.2 spot.  The 6-foot-6 RHP ran his fastball up to 89 mph and showed good feel for his secondary stuff at the PBR Future Games.  McGee, a Kentucky commit, has a huge ceiling and should have no problem adding additional velocity over his next two years of high school baseball.

+ Hunter Sullivan (Elizabethtown HS) moves up several spots to land in the No. 3 position.  At 6-foot, 175-pounds, Sullivan doesn’t wow you with size, but his arm is extremely quick, and he ran his fastball up to 91 mph with a sharp 75-77 mph slider at the PBR Future Games.  In fact, Sullivan had as dominant an inning at the Future Games as anyone as he struck out the side in his first inning of work against Team Wisconsin.  Sullivan is still uncommitted but has been drawing significant interest from many Division I programs around the country.

+ Jake Ziegelmeyer (Ryle HS) makes a big jump into the top 10 with an impressive performance at the Fall Prospect Games Event.  The 6-foot-3, 200-pound RHP topped at 87 mph with his fastball while also showing a sharp 76-78 mph slider and good feel for his 79-80 mph changeup.  In June, Ziegelmeyer sat 82-83 mph, so he has shown a significant jump in velocity the last few months with more likely to come.
