Our rankings are a direct result from our boots-to-the-ground-approach to scouting as we cover high school, travel ball, tournaments, and state events such as the commonwealth games.

Of course the most effective and easiest way to #BeSeen is to attend a PBR Virginia/DC event near you to create or update your PBR player profile with video and evaluation.

Today we take a look at some of the risers that have entered the fold in the updated rankings. Enjoy.

2020 Rankings Risers

Tyler Davis LHP / OF / Menchville, VA / 2020

PBR Future Games 8/1/18

Solid, durable frame at 6-foot, 211-pounds. Compact delivery with high leg kick and slight corkscrew in lift. Front shoulder tilt with longer arm action that creates fast arm speed. Nice balance throughout delivery with very good lower half involvement. Fastball has run on the pitch up to 86 mph. Change up has fade to the pitch with some late bite and dive to it at 75 mph. Throws two breaking balls, both with similar 12/6 action and occasional 1/7. Pitch has potential to be nice secondary and ranged from 70-77 mph. Harder breaking ball showed later action and has some swing and miss potential. Pitched well in his appearance and got stronger as he was out there. Depending on the level, has a chance to be a rotation arm with ability to throw three pitches and frame to last.

Ryley Johnson OF / LHP / Colgan, VA / 2020

VA/DC Scout Blog 4/12/18

Johnson has an athletic frame with some projection left to it and hits from the left side, open athletic stance, short stride on line, smooth load back, has good rhythm to his swing. Has some bat speed and gets barrel to contact quickly. Slightly uphill swing path with extension through the ball, line drive swing. Showed good knowledge of the strike zone and a whole-field approach. Speed is an asset for Johnson, getting up the line in 4.13 on a groundout despite pulling up a step or two early. Covers a lot of ground in center and gets good breaks on balls. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a loose arm action and what projects to be at least an above average arm. Has a chance to be an elite defender in center who hits near top of the order with a high average and the potential for extra base power.

Avery Mabe RHP / George Wythe (Wytheville), VA / 2020

7/2018

6-foot-4, 202-pounds, Virginia recruit. Athletic frame with upside and current strength. Simple side step delivery, rhythm and tempo throughout, lands open. Aarm action is clean and compact from a high three-quarter slot. Arm works and will continue to tick up velo. Fastball sat 89-90 with slight arm side run, occasionally cut it. Command average, but wasn't missing by a lot. Breaking ball has gradual break, 75-76, slows down arm speed, 11/5 shape. Potential to be a better pitch. Threw a few change-ups that were really good at 81 with arm side sink. With his frame and arm action, he should continue to climb.

Garrett Payne RHP / 1B / Miller School, VA / 2020

VA/DC Scout Blog 4/9/18

Payne has a tall lanky frame with a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a long, loose arm action that is quick. Very easy effort to his delivery. Fastball was 79-82, touching 83 with heavy run to it and his long arms and slot also create a very tough angle on hitters. Held his velocity well, still sitting 81-82 in the fourth inning. Showed his change-up twice at 72-74, pitch has run and armspeed. Slider flashed outstanding when he buried it. True swing and miss pitch now with late hard 10/4 break and was 71-75. Good athleticism as well, showed some batspeed and barrel awareness. Chance to develop into a pro prospect at some point in his career as he fills out and adds strength and velocity.....Payne has added velocity over this summer, now pitching up to 85mph, so his velocity is starting to climb. Payne has also transferred schools, now attending Miller School

Nicholas Willard RHP / OF / York, VA / 2020

Top Prospect Games II 8/8/18

Projectable lanky frame at 6-foot-2, 150-pounds. Has a controlled, deliberate, build up style delivery with short pause after rocker step. High leg kick straight up working down to out with lower half. Somewhat drop-n-drive with backside. Gets average lower half usae in delivery, would like to see more through release and high back side. Has a free arm action throwing from a high three quarter slot. Easy effort and creates fast arm speed. Falls off toward the first base side in finish. Fastball gets slight run on the pitch that was up to 85 mph. Throws two breaking balls in the the 71-75 range. Threw a more 12/6 breaing ball with gradual break and some depth. Threw a 10/4 action slider like pitch with later action up to 75 mph. Change up showed fade and dive to the pitch during warm ups, did not throw in game. Projectable arm that has some more room for growth down the road and more velo.
