Vermont Spotlight Game: Brattleboro vs Burr and Burton

MANCHESTER, Vt.— A big day at the plate and on the mound for junior Jay McCoy lifted host Burr and Burton to a 7-4 win over Brattleboro as two of Vermont’s top teams met in a Marble Valley League matchup at sun-drenched Recreation Field in Manchester Tuesday.

McCoy went four-for-four with a long home run and picked up the win holding off the Colonels with two and a third innings of one-hit relief as the Bulldogs, third in the latest PBR Vermont Power Rankings, improved to 12-2. Brattleboro, ranked seventh in the latest PBR ratings, falls to 8-4. The Colonels were without the services one of their top players, junior Leif Bigelow, a UConn commit who was the Vermont PBR Preseason Player of the Year.

B&B senior starter Griff Stalcup, a talented two-way player who was the Vermont PBR Preseason Position Player of the Year and is headed to Bowdoin, was nicked for a run in the top of the first. He walked leadoff hitter Tanner Bell and after a strikeout, junior Dan Petrie and senior Conor Hiner had back-to-back singles. Kam Pelkey walked to load the bases before Stalcup induced a soft liner by Tommy Carroll that was turned into a double play by McCoy at shortstop.

The Bulldogs would get it back and more with three in the first and two in the second. After three straight singles and a wild pitch to start the home half of the first tied the game, Tyler Kraehling’s deep sacrifice fly and Daniel Hatheway’s RBI single made it 3-1. Stalcup’s RBI groundout and a run-scoring single by McCoy added two more in the next inning.

Pelkey’s RBI groundout in the top of the third made it 5-2 before Burr and Burton added single runs in the bottom of the third on junior Sam Cottrell’s double and McCoy’s long solo home run to left in the fourth.

Brattleboro took advantage of wildness in the fifth with a run on three walks and a hit batter. McCoy came in with the bases loaded and two outs, walked Chris Hall to force in the Colonels third run before fanning the last batter to end the threat. He would retire the next five before hitting Pelkey with two down in the seventh. He would score the final run on a double by Carroll, before Hall popped out to end the game.

Top Performers

Burr and Burton Academy:

• Jay McCoy, SS/RHP- the above-mentioned junior went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBI and a stolen base, and pitched the final two and a third innings for the victory (one hit, one walk, one run and 2 Ks). At shortstop, his strong relay throw from short center field nailed a runner at third trying to stretch a double, limiting an early potential big inning by Brattleboro.
• Daniel Hatheway, 2B- speedy sophomore reached three times in three trips with two singles, a walk, two runs scored and two walks
• Griff Stalcup, RHP/SS- Bowdoin-bound senior pitched the first three innings allowing two runs before reaching his pitch limit to be available later in the week. Singled and walked, scored a run a stole a base on four trips.

Brattleboro Union:

• Dan Petrie, C- Junior went 2-for-4 with a solid line drive single and a well-struck double, both hits off one of the state’s top pitchers in B&B righty Griffin Stalcup.
• Kam Pelkey, RF-  Junior was on base all four trips with a single, two walks and a RBI fielder’s choice. Also scored a run and had an outfield assist.
• Conor Hiner, 1B- senior reached base three times in four trips, scoring once. with a RBI single and two walks
