Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

On the verge of releasing our updated and expanded 2023 national rankings, we go back to our Washington Pre-Season ID event this past February to check out the participating players from that class. A strong group of 2023 grads were in attendance that day.

Below is the first half of the group. We will conclude with the remaining '23 prospects later this week.

For more info on each prospect. Click on their name to be taken to their profile page. Each profile page will have all stats from the event.

2023 grads

Preston Brenner RHP / SS / Arlington, WA / 2023

5-foot-11, 140 pounds with a wiry frame throughout. Sets up in the box with an upright, narrow stance. Stays tall as lead knee drives towards back hip. Smooth forward stride. Hands stay loaded near back rear shoulder as he gets into landing. Uses some bat wiggle for timing. Stays in legs as he initiates swing. Barrel works down then flattens out thru the zone. Level finish thru contact. Defensively, feet stay active at SS. Allowing him to keep momentum working thru the ball. Avoids getting flat footed or sitting back too long. Moves well laterally with easy strides while keeping control of glove hand. Quick exchange into low ¾ release. Short, bent arm action. On the mound, pitches with a consistent delivery and deliberate tempo. Works from the first base side of the rubber. Keeps extension on back leg at leg lift. Front side stays closed at landing while hips open up to give him direction towards the catcher. Hides ball well with same short arm action from the INF. Releases from a low ¾ slot, borderline side-arm. Eyes stay on target throughout with extension out front as he finishes.

William Custer C / RHP / Roosevelt , WA / 2023

5-foot-11, 200 pounds with a mature, durable frame and strong build. Narrow, relaxed stance with front foot slightly open. Hands stay loose and create rhythm with barrel as he takes controlled, forward stride. Weight stays centered. Takes a subtle scap load into landing. Creates impressive bat speed for his age with easy effort. Keeps hands inside the ball at contact. High finish with leverage. At catcher, big bodied target who stays quiet while receiving. Shows some mobility with his one-knee set up. Hips stay at about knee height from the crouch position. Showed a quick exchange into throwing motion. Ball stays high into ¾ release. Backside comes thru as he finishes. Consistent, accurate ball flight on throws down to 2nd. On the mound, worked exclusively out of the stretch during bullpen. Stays tall during high leg lift with slight coil towards his back shoulder. Keeps height on back leg into shorter forward stride. Full arm swing with a continuous path. Works from low ¾ release with impressive extension out front. Uses strong lower half to brace up his momentum. Stays controlled thru aggressive finish that bodes well for future gains.

Brett Ellingson LHP / OF / Puyallup , WA / 2023

Long, lanky frame with significant projection at 6-foot-1, 155 pounds. Athletic, slightly open stance in the box. Starts with lower half opened to pitcher. Hands show some rhythm/movement prior to short, forward stride. Tight, compact swing. Rotates well to create bat speed with easy effort. Loose, whippy barrel action thru the zone with some extension after contact. Size and actions profile well to the OF. Length in his lower half allows him to move easily with long, smooth strides. Showed well during defensive workout with consistent, clean exchange into throwing motion. Uses a side shuffle as he begins full arm swing into high ¾ release. Long, loose arm action. Pitches with a sound delivery and consistent throwing actions. Works at a deliberate pace. High leg kick with subtle turn from his lower half to load his hips. Creates some shoulder angle at hand break as he works down the slope. Clear direction towards target at landing. Tighter arm action than in the OF but with same high ¾ release. Finishes out front with hand speed thru release. Will likely show a jump in pure stuff as his frame continues to fill out.

Logan Hall SS / 3B / Glacier Peak , WA / 2023

Lean, proportional frame at 5-foot-9, 140 pounds. Hits from a balanced, slightly closed off stance with upright posture. Barrel resting in flat position on back shoulder to begin. Lead foot works back as he loads and then gets into long forward stride. Hands show a quick, subtle load to create angle with his barrel. Hands work into the zone early and let his barrel get on plane. Swing stays flat into contact with a level finish. Holds stance thru contact. Defensively, moves well in the INF with light, active feet. Showed a pre-pitch hop in his fielding approach, which enabled him to move easily with his first step. Keeps working thru the ball as he receives with a soft glove hand. Quick exchange with hands into throwing motion. Short, compact arm action from low ¾ release.

Owen Haugen C / 3B / Bellarmine Prep, WA / 2023

5-foot-10, 180 pounds with a developed frame and strength in his build. Sets up in the box with some weight pre-shifted onto his back-side. Front foot works back into a toe tap before taking forward stride. Hands stay quiet, relaxed while near back shoulder. Very few moving parts in swing allow him to stay short, quick to the ball. Hands stay tight to the body & he controls the barrel well throughout. High finish with loft thru contact. Solid actions behind the dish at the catcher position. Showed a low, one-knee set up while receiving. Gets into side shuffle out of crouch to create alignment and momentum towards 2nd. Short, whippy arm action from high ¾ release. Throws consistently stayed in-line with the bag. At 3b, flashed solid footwork while fielding from a wide, balanced base. Keeps control of glove hand as he moves laterally. Compact arm action from slightly lower release than when he catches.

Brad Johnson SS / RHP / Archbishop Murphy, WA / 2023

6-foot-1, 170 pounds with athletic build and projectable frame. Starts with a narrow, open stance with tall posture. Hovers on back-side as he glides into his forward move and stride. Initiates swing while in a wide, balanced position. Works quick to the ball with a fluid, easy swing. Creates bat speed with quick hands. Shows some lift in finish thru contact. Rangy athlete in the OF with long, easy strides. Moves well and keeps his balance throughout. Gets around the ball so he can receive on his glove side and quickly transition into throwing motion. High, over the top release with a clean, full arm path. In the INF, handled all the opportunities at SS with sound fielding actions. Shows quicker, shorter footwork than in the OF while moving laterally. Does a solid job sinking his hips to get down to the ball. Flashed tighter, more compact arm action with low ¾ release. On the mound, showed a repeatable delivery with consistent throwing actions. Stays tall at leg lift while creating some coil with his lower half. Weight stays on his back-side at hand break. Creates slight angle in shoulder plane with a high glove side as he works down the mound. Full arm path into high ¾ release. Arm action projects well for future development. Gets considerable extension out over a strong, posted front leg. Backside comes thru at release while eyes stay on target. Very promising prospect in ‘23 class.
