Wake Forest claimed a 2 to 1 victory over East Wake in a non-conference game Tuesday. Trevor Creech for East Wake and Josh Copeland for Wake Forest turned in quality starts.  The Cougars scratched 2 runs in the 2nd, holding off East Wake the rest of the way.

Wake Forest’s Josh Copeland (RHP, 2018) threw 6 innings, gave up 3 hits, struck out 6, walked 2 and gave up 1 run. Copeland used a three pitch mix with his fastball topping at 77.  Two different breaking balls were featured, with the curveball at 68 and a cutter at 74.  Copeland was able to keep East Wake off balance, over his 93 pitch outing, before turning the game over to SR, RHP Grant Smith (Brunswick CC commit).  Smith retired 3 batters to earn a save, sitting 81 and utilizing a curveball and change.  The breaking ball touched 72, with the change providing some deception at 75.

Wake Forest’s offense was led by John Garvey (2017), Jeff Leary (2018), Cuyler O’Neill (2019), Connor Loeffler (2018), and Kyle Wilson (2019).  O’Neill recorded 2 hits, with the others each pounding out one hit apiece.  O’Neill and Loeffler accounted for the two 2nd inning RBI’s.

Trevor Creech (RHP, 2017, Wake Tech CC commit) threw 4.1 innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 walks, struck out 2 and gave up 2 runs for East Wake. Creech, a Wake Tech CC commit, pitched at 78-79, topping out at 82 mph.

Creech relied on his defense throughout the game as he was in some trouble from the Wake Forest offense.  In the 3rd, a bases loaded jam was erased by a 2 out diving catch, keeping the score 2-1.  East Wake’s right fielder, Alex Hocutt (2017) ranged to the gap, laying out to make a spectacular defensive play.  In the 4th, Creech wiggled out of a 2nd & 3rd, no out, situation without giving up a run, and keeping East Wake within striking distance.

Peyton Creech (2017, OF/LHP, Francis Marion commit) relieved Trevor, throwing the final 1.2 innings, recording the save.  Peyton gave up one hit and one walk but erased any damage with 2 strikeouts, not allowing any runs. Peyton also hit a solo home run, in the top of the 3rd, to account for East Wake’s only run.
