Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

If you love pitching, this would have been a day to get out and watch some baseball. Offensive highlights were at a minimum in this one as we got stellar pitching performances across the board in both ends of the DH

O’Dea started things off with a narrow 1-0 victory over Chief Sealth that had only 5 total hits.

Then in the nightcap, West Seattle pieced together 3 runs and held off Ballard by a final of 3-1 in a contest that only had 6 total hits.

3.23.22 - O'Dea, Chief Sealth, West Seattle, Ballard

Simon Adams, RHP, O’Dea, 2022 This was our 2nd look at Adams after a brief relief appearance in the rain earlier this spring. The crafty senior had it working on this look, spinning a CG shutout with 2 H, 4 BB and 3 K. Stuff wise it was a similar look to what we’ve seen from Adams before, 82-84 with the FB, topped 85 with a solid, consistent SL. Showed solid mound presence and got some big double play balls for his defense throughout the game. Uncommitted.

Joe Githens, C, O’Dea, 2022 Produced a majority of the offense for O’Dea with 2 of their 3 hits. Although he didn’t technically cross home plate, it was his 4th inning double that led to the only run scored in the game as the courtesy runner came into score after a sac fly from ‘23 Jeffrey Woods. Simply put, hitters hit and Githens continues to display a mature approach at the plate with a consistent ability to barrel up the ball to all parts of the field. Uncommitted.

Worth noting that ‘22 SS Richard Barkley (Coast Guard commit) played a strong SS for O’Dea and worked well in tandem with ‘24 INF Isaiah Nolan.

Ryan Moore, RHP/INF, Chief Sealth, 2023 Matched Adams with zeroes for 4 full innings and finished with a final line of 5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. Pitches with 2 variations to his FB. Showed a 4s offering at 80-82 and more of a sinking FB/2s offering at 78-79 with distinctly more movement. Also effectively used an 11/5 breaking ball at 67-68. Overall has some craftiness to his arsenal and understands how to disrupt timing with hitters. Uncommitted.

Wyatt Trujillo, RHP/INF, Chief Sealth, 2023 Relieved Moore of his quality outing and spun 2 scoreless innings of his own. Working quick and going right at hitters from a lower ¾ slot, Trujillo used an effective slider that plays well off of the the ASR that his FB generates. Uncommitted.

Uncommitted juniors C Jake Daily and 1B/LHP Luke Sketchley both swung it well for Chief Sealth  in a couple ABs with hard contact but the defense put the clamps down on some tough plays and denied both guys the opportunity to get on base.

Miles Gosztola, LHP/1B, West Seattle, 2023, Gonzaga commit Gosztola has put up gaudy numbers all year long on the bump and has continued to ascend towards the top of his class. While conditions were less than ideal for this look, he battled and showed some grit while handling some adversity on the bump. While his BB total was a bit high for his standard, he only allowed 2 hits in 4.2 IP and punched out 10. The velo jump has arrived and the FB now sits 85-86 comfortably and topped at 88. The added zip makes his CB/CH even tougher for hitter’s to adjust to, especially when behind in the count.

Maddox Brent, INF/RHP, West Seattle, 2022 Wenatchee Valley commit. Finished the job for Gosztola and tossed 2.1 innings of relief while punching out 3. Strong bodied and physical, Brent drives his heavy FB downhill at 80-81 with sinking life in the bottom of the zone. Provides a mature presence for West Seattle to turn to late in games.

Tristan Buehring, OF, West Seattle, 2024 One of many impressive sophomores on the roster, Buehring got the nod in LF and finished 1-2 with a RBI triple and BB. The added run he produced in the 4th helped extend the lead to 2-0 for West Seattle on a night where offense was tough to come by. Look for Buehring to be an underclass bat to keep an eye on this summer. Uncommitted.

Caden Fahy, INF/RHP, West Seattle, 2024 Had another strong game offensively going 1-3 with a R and RBI. Also swiped 2 bags on the bases. Plays aggressive throughout and patrols SS with plenty of confidence. Emerging as a 2024 name-to-know this spring. Uncommitted.

Carson Nakagawara, INF/RHP, Ballard, 2022 Battled thru the cold and kept the West Seattle offense in check for a good portion of the game. Crafty righty who relies on getting hitters off balance and using his secondary offerings to induce weak contact. Nakagawara works quick from a tight, compact arm path and high ¾ release with a FB/SL combo. Also capable of handling INF duties with quick, athletic footwork and a clean exchange. Added a hit on offense as well. Uncommitted.

Alex Greb, 1B, Ballard, 2022 Wenatchee Valley commitShowed some bat speed and power potential early on with a hard single in his 1st AB of the game to start off the 2nd inning. It would be only 1 of 3 hits Ballard recorded on the night. Profile wise, his size and strength fits at 1B and he is a threat to do damage each time he comes up to the plate.
