Alberta Insider: Weekend Preview - July 17-18

PBR Alberta will have its presence felt across the province with scouts attending multiple games this weekend, in this article we will highlight some players to watch as well as the pitching matchups for each of those games.

Calgary Junior Dinos Black(11-4) @ Fort McMurray Oil Giants(11-6):

According to the latest update on the Baseball Alberta standings, Fort McMurray will play host to an exciting series between two evenly matched teams fighting for better seeding in the upcoming provincial tournament.

Pitching Matchups:

Game 1: Sam Groves vs Max Poole

Game 2: Jared Eifler vs Bailey Nydokus

Game 3: Shaun Logan vs Sean Dunn

Game 4: Wyatt Steves vs Bailey Coish

Players to watch:

Junior Dinos:

2019 Ben Prediger: The #12 prospect in the 2019 class will look to drive in runs in the middle of the Dinos order while playing solid defense behind the plate.

2019 Diego Lange: The #21 prospect in the 2019 class will be a player to keep an eye on this weekend as his simple approach at the plate will look to lead the offensive charge against Fort McMurray.

2020 Tom Poole: Rounding out the players to watch for the Dinos is Tom Poole. In the recently released 2020 rankings Poole has found himself at #8.

Fort McMurray:

2019 Justin Breen: One of the standout defenders at the Calgary College Prospect Showcase and the #9 ranked 2019 prospect in the province will look to help Fort McMurray continue to climb the standings.

2019 Bailey Coish: The #34 2019 prospect will look to do a little bit of everything for the Giants this weekend including starting on the mound. The Oil Giants will look for Coish to be a major contributor this weekend.

Calgary Cubs (2-15) @ South Jasper Place Blue Jays (7-10)

The South Jasper Place Blue Jays will host the Calgary Cubs for a four game set this Saturday and Sunday. According to the Baseball Alberta Standings this weekend is setting up to be an important weekend for the SJP Blue Jays as they look to make up ground on the Calgary Bandits in the Tier 2 standings.

Pitching Matchups:

Game 1: Drew Tkachuk vs Dylan Chudek

Game 2: Kayde Kinaschuk vs Colin Campbell

Game 3: Aiden Newton vs TBA

Game 4: Calder Eagleton vs TBA

Players to watch:

South Jasper:

2020 Tyler Hardy: One of the top performers from the South Jasper Scout Day, Hardy will look to make noise with the bat but also with his low 80’s fastball.

2018 Tate Clifford: Tate Clifford impressed with his bat and his glove at the South Jasper Scout Day and will be an exciting player to watch this weekend.

Calgary Cubs:

2018 Treyven Gulliford: Gulliford performed all over the diamond at the recent Central AB Summer Open. He will be a player to watch for the Cubs as he can assist at multiple spots around the field.

Northern Lights(11-2) @ Red Deer Braves(6-5):

The Red Deer Braves will have home field advantage against the Northern Lights this weekend for a doubleheader Saturday. The Northern Lights will look to continue their winning ways while Red Deer looks to work their way back up the Tier 1 standings.

Game 1: Kial Atkinson vs Matthew Cole      

Game 2: Dawson Kokesh vs Josh Zinger

Players to watch:

Red Deer

2018 Cooper Jones: Southeastern commit Cooper Jones is a must watch in this series as he has the ability to change the game with his bat. He will also be a factor on the mound as he is slated to start game X.

2019 Jared Arnold: Jared Arnold out of Vauxhall Academy will look to make an impact on the mound in this series featuring his projectable frame and low to mid 80’s fastball.

Northern Lights

2019 Kai Reum: RHP/SS Kai Reum is the #24 prospect in the 2019 class. He is a strong and athletic player that projects to play infield at the next level where he can better utilize his athleticism.

Edmonton Cardinals 18U @ Okotoks Dawgs Black

In a matchup between two of the top travel teams in the province the Okotoks Dawgs will host the Edmonton Cardinals for a four game set. This will be a marquee matchup with multiple players to watch on both sides, this has all the makings for a very exciting four games.

Pitching Matchups:

Game 1: Haden Dow vs Graham Brunner(Probable)

Game 2: Michael Serna vs Brendan Logan(Probable)

Game 3  Chas Wheatley vs Matt Wilkinson(Probable)

Game 4: Andrew Yusypchuk vs Bryce Libke(Probable)

Players to Watch

Dawgs Black

2019 Ayden Makarus: The #4 2019 prospect will look to do damage at the plate for Okotoks this weekend against a quality group of arms from the Edmonton Cardinals. Makarus had the highest exit velocity at the Calgary College Prospect Showcase this January topping out at 93 mph.

2019 Cesar Valero: The #1 Ranked 2019 prospect is a very exciting player that will use a combination of speed, power and defense to lead the Okotoks Dawgs this weekend. The Oregon State commit is one of the most dynamic talents in the province.

2020 Ricardo Sanchez: The #4 ranked 2020 prospect is extremely talented and will look to drive the ball gap to gap while playing above average defense in the middle infield.

2020 Alejandro Cazorla: The #2 ranked 2020 prospect and fellow Oregon State Commit will be counted on to provide some offensive punch but will also be a player to watch in the field as he possesses a very strong arm.

Edmonton Cardinals

2019 Haden Dow: Haden Dow is one of the top LHP prospects in the province for the 2019 class and he will look to silence the bats of a solid offensive group out of Okotoks. Dow will start game one of the weekend with Coach Burns looking to get a solid outing out of his ace.

2020 Chas Wheatley: Slated as the game three starter for Coach Taylor Burns, Wheatley has a very projectable 6-foot-6 frame and comes right at hitters with his fastball. Ranked as the #7 2020, his start will definitely be one to keep an eye on.

2020 Andrew Yusypchuk: Yusypchuk is set to start game four of the weekend for the Cardinals and will use his low to mid 80’s fastball to combat the power throughout the Okotoks lineup.

2020 Jack Rea: Jack Rea is the #13 prospect in the 2020 rankings. The shortstop will look to play solid defense but also be productive at the plate for the Cardinals.
