Prep Baseball Report Iowa's Western Prospect I.D. event took place on Saturday, September 26, 2015. The event was at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2016, 2017 and 2018 class who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and multiple coaches in attendance.

Player Evaluations (Listed Alphabetically)

Justin Aldrich, RHP/OF, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, 2017
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Simple delivery to plate with good direction and upright finish. Short arm action with varying sink and cut action on fastball at 77-79 mph. Tends to wrap breaking ball early; shows solid 11/5 shape and break. Changeup is thrown with good arm speed with flashes of run and sink. 7.29 runner. Square stance and is short to contact. Middle/away approach with solid contact to middle of field. 79 mph exit velocity off tee. Avg. footwork in outfield. Glove is solid. Uphill on release with throws to plate. Avg. accuracy. 79 mph arm strength.

Kyle Gulbrandson, RHP/OF, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, 2017
5-foot-9, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Heavy tuck and turn delivery. Lands slightly across body with cross-fire delivery to plate. Slight run and sink on fastball with solid command at 70-74 mph. 10/4 sweeping breaking ball with flashes of hard break and depth. Leaves changeup arm-side with occasional run and sink. 8.22 runner. Slight crouch in stance. Knee to knee trigger. Falls over plate at contact. Flashes solid pop in bat to middle of field. 73 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork in outfield. Works behind fly-balls. Longer arm action with on-line throws and solid accuracy to target. 76 mph arm strength.

Tyler Hayes, LHP, Sioux Falls O’Gorman, 2017
6-foot-5, 185-pound left-handed pitcher. Tall projectable frame. Solid tempo and rhythm in delivery. Long arm action with above avg. command to arm-side of plate with fastball. Good direction to plate with upright finish. Fastball was 75-79 mph with varying action. Flies open at times on breaking ball. Flashes sharp break with 1/7 shape. Changeup has above avg. depth with run and sink and is thrown at fastball arm speed.

Devyn Hember, OF, Cherokee, 2017
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.06 runner. High back elbow with short leg kick stride. Needs improved balance in swing. Uphill swing plane. Solid contact to pull side of field. Minimal use of lower half through contact. 74 mph exit velocity off tee. Decent athlete in field. Fields with 2-hands occasionally. Glove and feet are solid. Low ¾ arm slot effects carry, velocity and accuracy to target. 71 mph arm strength.

Dustin Moon, OF/RHP, Sioux City East, 2016
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.25 runner. Simple load with good weight transfer through contact. Middle/pull approach. Out and around at contact occasionally. Showed solid pop in bat to gaps. 86 mph exit velocity off tee. Average actions in outfield. Avg. glove and feet. Short arm action with solid accuracy to target. Minimal use of momentum on throws. 73 mph arm strength. Sound balance point with good direction to plate. Short arm action from OT slot. Fastball works on a downhill plane with slight cutting action at 71-74 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape with loose gradual break. Split has fade with running sink and average depth.

Eric Peterson, OF, Cherokee, 2017
5-foot-9, 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. 7.35 runner. Athletic set-up with open stance. Short stride with balance in swing. Circular path to contact. Uses whole field. 78 mph exit velocity off tee. Avg. actions in outfield. Minimal use of lower half on throws. Elevated throws to plate. 67 mph arm strength.

Nick Phelps, OF, Woodbury Central, 2018
6-foot, 205-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Strong build. 7.43 runner. Raw hitting mechanics. Well above average power in bat. Pull approach. Loft in swing. Mis-hit couple balls out of yard. 77 mph exit velocity off tee. Stiff actions in outfield. Short arm action with elevated throws to plate. Strides open on throws causing sinking action and minimal carry. 72 mph arm strength. Power in bat will be a tool to follow for college coaches.

Dylan Riley, SS/RHP, Sioux City East, 2016
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.69 runner. Square stance. Strides slightly across body. Arm bar in load. Flashes ability to drive ball into oppo gap. Solid weight transfer through contact. 85 mph exit velocity off tee. Good angles and routes to baseball. Fields slightly across body. Glove is above average and fields out front. Short quick release on throws with accuracy to target. 72 mph arm strength. Slight crouch at balance point. Lands slightly across body in delivery. Short arm action from OT slot. Shows good command of fastball with downhill plane and slight run at 73-75 mph. 11/5 Curveball has solid depth and flashes of sharp break. Changeup shows solid fade with good feel for bottom of zone.

Derrick Schorg, SS, Remsen St. Mary’s, 2018
6-foot-3, 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 8.25 runner. Spread square stance with short stride to contact. Inconsistent load effects timing. Works middle of field with ability to hit line drives to oppo gap. 76 mph exit velocity off tee. Above avg. feet in field. Funnels baseball into body. Average/ok range. Average accuracy to target. 72 mph arm strength.

Jack Simonsen, C, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, 2017
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.62 runner. Slight crouch in stance. High hand position with simple load. Middle/away approach with hard line drive contact to middle of field. 82 mph exit velocity off tee. Good flexibility in lower half. Keeps target in bottom of zone. Shows ability to receive and block. Keeps ball close and in front. 73 mph arm strength with pop times ranging 2.09-2.19 with solid accuracy to bag.

Ross Van Kley, OF/RHP, Sheldon, 2016
6-foot-4, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.19 runner. Simple set-up. Slight arm bar in load. Flat swing plane with gap to gap approach. Solid line drive contact to pull side of field. 81 mph exit velocity off tee. Athletic actions in outfield. Aggressive routes to ball. Light on his feet. Hitch in arm action. Solid accuracy to target. 77 mph arm strength. Tuck and turn delivery with collapse at balance point. Pitches up and over front side. Avg./ok life on fastball on a downhill plane with slight run at 72-75 mph. 12/6 shape on breaking ball with minimal break. Knuckleball has split-action with running sink and solid depth.

Cody Van Meeteren, 3B, Sheldon, 2017
6-foot-4, 175-pound right-handed hitting third baseman. 7.38 runner. Narrow open stance. Knee to knee trigger. Dive bomb stride to contact. Creates bat speed. Gap to gap approach. Battled timing occasionally. 91 mph exit velocity off tee. Fields low to ground. Late glove position to field. Moves and fields well laterally. Solid accuracy to target. 78 mph arm strength across diamond.
