2020 RHP Christian Worley (Virginia Tech) put up a masterpiece in his first start of the Halifax Comets baseball season as the Comets defeated the Dan River Wildcats 5-0. Worley threw a no-hitter while striking out 17.

Halifax would strike first to start the game, after Zack Lowery led the game off with a walk and stole second base Dylan Clark would drive a ball to left field for a RBI double to start the scoring for the Comets.

The game turned into a pitchers duel heading all the way to the fifth inning. Worley worked perfect thru 5.2 innings, while Dan River starter Dawson Oakes matched Worley for the Wildcats, holding the Comet lineup at bay into the fifth.

Halifax would strike again for two in the fifth, manufacturing one while Clark would get his second RBI of the day with a ball up the middle with the infield in after a pitching change. The Comets would then extend their lead in the sixth from the bat of 2021 Joey Duffer, who hit a two-run homer to left-center to make the score 5-0.

The story of the day however, was Worley. The lanky and projectable righty kept a young wildcat lineup off balance all day, using a steady mix of fastball and breaking ball with a handful of changeups. Worley showed excellent control on the day, working down in the zone consistently and maintaining his velocity throughout. Worley was perfect thru 5.2 innings where then he issued his first of two walks in the contest that were his only blemishes of the day.  At one point he struck out 11 batters in a row in the middle innings, and the Comet defense also backed him up in the second when Tyler Mabe made a highlight-worthy full extension, over the shoulder diving catch in right field off a well hit ball by Wildcat outfielder Alex Alderson.

Clark and Duffer led the Comet offense with two hits and two RBI apiece.

Halifax improves to 2-0 in the early season matchup, while Dan River, who are a talented young team that should make some noise this season, drops to 1-1.
