Prep Baseball Report

Year in Review: College Commitments

Brian Feekin
Nebraska Scouting Director

Starting with the launch of PBR Nebraska in February, we followed the high school season throughout the Spring and Legion Summer. We held the Top Prospect Showcase in May, Border Battle & Central Nebraska Prospect ID in August and Fall Review in October.  Our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff has seen a dizzying amount of baseball players, which allows us to accumulate information and be the #1 resource for high school baseball in the state of Nebraska.

With the New Year approaching, we decided to take a look back through the college commitments made by prospects across the state.

The 2017 class currently has 47 commits. Eight of these commitments are to Division-1 programs, seven are committed to Division-2, 16 are committed to Junior Colleges and 17 are committed to NAIA or Division-3 programs. At this point, we would not be surprised if we saw 60+ committed as there are still very strong prospects available in Thomas Webster, Ben Crnkovich, Dakota Smith and Cameron Wynne etc. Of those committed in the 2017 class, 57% attended a PBR event in the last two years.

The 2018 class is one of the most talented classes in the last five years in Nebraska. There are currently eight players committed to Division-1 programs with multiple other players knocking on the door of Division-1 opportunities. The 2018 class has an elite level pro prospect with Colby Gomes.  Along with Gomes, Shay Schanaman, Kyle Perry and Drew Gilin provide the Huskers a strong pipeline of in state talent. Outside the Omaha area, Zach Argo, Austin Schultz, Garrett Olson and Casey Burnham have pledged their commitment to bordering state schools. When the 2018 class is finished, we would not be surprised if 12-15 players  are committed to Division-1 programs.
